I’m Vengeance - S01 E05

I cleared my throat and tried digesting what my dad just said and smiled,

“I am not my mother neither will I end like her, you know what Desmond has done for me and I am very happy with him, that’s the difference between us you know, I said and he coughed.

“No problem then, its your choice. When is he coming home? My dad asked and I smiled.

“Anytime, Let me get you something to eat first, I said and left his room.

Going out i met with my siblings and told them about it, they just had to be happy and congratulated me.

“So when are we doing the aso ebi? My younger sister asked and i quickly remembered what Desmond told me.

“Let’s talk about that later okay, daddy is hungry, I replied her and we left together to the kitchen.

I got home and told Desmond about it and he accepted to go with me the next day, then I slowly brought up the wedding issue again,

“My sister asked if she will be doing the aso ebi, i said.

“What’s that? He asked..

“Aso ebi na, women stuff on wedding day, I replied.

“Oh that, are we getting married tomorrow? He asked.

“But we have to plan now against the day, I replied.

“Love why are you bothering yourself with things that does not matter? Why can’t you be like me and have a private life? What do you think wedding is all about? Is it until the aso ebi girls come and all the crowd that will make you feel you have a wedding? Let’s have something simple and very private, just us and our parents and that will be all, stop throwing away money please I beg you, you know I don’t have it, Desmond blurred out and I weakly looked at him.

“What then are we doing to have? I asked him.

“An indoor traditional wedding and a court, he replied.

“Court? No church? I asked.

“Not again please, the main wedding is the traditional and that’s important. Please stop following the crowd, remember there’s life after wedding you know, he replied and I just looked at him.

If speechless was a person it will be me, every lady dreams of how special that day will be, but looks like mine will be different and I just had to accept.

The next day he met my dad and they talked a lot of things which he intelligently answered as if he memorized all of it at home.

“And what about your family? My dad asked.

“I’m an orphan sir, he replied.

“My condolence, but at least you should have a family….. Extended family at least, my dad said.

“I know sir but they don’t care about me, I’ve always been on my own, he replied and my dad looked at me and I bowed my head.

“So what is going to happen now during the wedding? Who will stand in? He asked.

“Well, I have an uncle I have so much respect for. He tried helping me when he had some cash until his business went down, I’ll talk to him and he will be happy to stand in. And again sir, we already talked about how the wedding will be, it will be private, very private, he replied.

“You mean no invitation of guests? My dad asked.

“Exactly sir, indoor traditional marriage and the registry, please sir that’s more important as long as we have your blessings because we have so much to plan and achieve ahead of us and when we are financially balanced, I promise we will do a marriage blessing where crowd will be invited, Desmond replied and my dad nodded.

“I can’t say yes or no when you both have already decided, its fine. Don’t worry the list will be prepared so you can pay her dowry and do what ever you want, I wish you both well, my dad said.

“Thank you sir, Desmond said smiling at me.

“Thank you daddy, I said forcing a smile.

“You’re welcome and thanks for the gifts, My dad said.

“No its nothing, Desmond said laughing and I breathed out finally all the questioning is over.

Desmond went around looking for a job after that but he kept rejecting the ones he saw saying he is worth more than that.

A week later my dad called that the marriage list is ready and I told him about it which he promised to go get it the next day.

“Without your family? Won’t there be a knocking of door at least? I asked and he rubbed his head.

“Where is the money Joan? He asked.

“Joan? I asked back surprised he called me by name and he heaved.

“I’m sorry love but please can you just understand with me? He asked.

“What is there to understand? You are to come with your family to get the list from mine, or do you think my dad will be the only one there to give you the list? My uncles will be there what about yours? I asked.

“Okay fine, I’ll be visiting my uncle tomorrow to tell him about it so he can go with me, care to join me? He asked.

“I’m not interested, I angrily replied and left the house immediately.

I was getting confused of everything and I didn’t feel right about it and felt I should talk with someone.

After our final exams I haven’t spoken with Precious because she travelled immediately to her place and never cared to call for even a day. I didn’t try her number also and decided to that day, and after 2 rings she picked up,

“Hello, her voice came on phone.

“Haba Precious so because you finish school you just abandon me ba? I asked and she screamed on phone.

“Jesus Christ! Babe its not like that, do you know I lost my phone when traveling? All my contacts and everything gone, and it wasn’t long I retrieved that line and its because of you sef, wassup na? I missed you so much, she shouted.

“Yeye I no believe your lie joor, I said..

“True to God you been try my number and e ring? My phone lost no vex abeg, how that side? She asked.

“Fine o, I replied.

“And our bobo Dee? She asked and I laughed with the tone she used.

“We’ll be getting married soon o, I replied and she almost blocked my ear drums.

“When ooo! I’ll be there live ahh this is good news, see something play play o, she said and I laughed. Precious will always have a way to take me off my bad mood and the main reason why I called was quickly forgotten as we ended up discussing other things, but along the way she asked about the aso ebi stuff again and I remembered why I called and told her my feelings and she laughed.

“Desmond wey dey always do something like them oyibo people, but if you ask me I think he has a point, no be until crowd dey. I don see people wey wed and the people around no reach 10 sef, they snap picture and everybody go your house. No be everything go loud maybe you should just understand with him as he no get to do wetin you want, she said.

“What if I want to sponsor it? He’s bluntly refusing it and insisting on something private like say na cultism initiation, I said and Precious laughed me enough..

“That one no concern me, but my own be say whether na private o or public, I Precious must be there live and direct so no disturb yourself, she said and I smiled shaking my head.

“Silly girl, i told her.

“My dear enjoy it o and stop fanning issues when its not important, he’s an orphan and His family doesn’t care about him, if na me I go do same I no go send them too so relax and enjoy your boo, Precious said and I heaved.

“Okay madam I’ve heard you, anyhow I’ll let you know, I said.

“Yea baby, I’ve missed you so much oh my God! She screamed again………..

I got home late still not happy and Desmond opened the door for me. I wanted passing him but he held me back and hugged me at the back, before I knew it I felt something on my neck and saw a Chain.

“I’m sorry love, don’t think it doesn’t pain me I can’t do what am supposed to do for you. Look I can’t even find a good job I was thinking I’ll add the pay with the savings I got there from camp so it can push me far, that’s why I want something simple for us, just for now. I care about your feelings and I understand its what every lady wants but I promise you, we will have a marriage blessing. It won’t even be in Nigeria, I’ll give you the most expensive wedding gown with a beautiful cake. Our reception will be at a beautiful beach and we’ll have dignitaries around to celebrate us. I’ll hold your hand and profess my love to you in the midst of the crowd and tell them how very special you are to me and how I love you so dearly, I promise you Joan I’ll make a long train of aso ebi ladies for you, just give me time I beg you, Desmond romantically said that I saw myself crying.

“Stop teasing me will you, I said trying hard not to laugh.

“But this is a promise my love and I want you to understand with me, he said touching my cheeks and I smiled.

“Okay fine, be sure you make that happen if not I’ll break your head, I said and he laughed and kissed me……….

A week later Desmond was able to meet with his uncle who decided to come with another of his relative for the knocking of door. There we agreed on the date of the wedding which was in a month time… Just a day thing where the traditional marriage and the registry would be done and it will be over. I had no issue with the setting anymore and there was nothing much to be done apart from buying of few drinks and cooking of food and that will be all, it was indeed simple and private.

I told Precious about it and she offered to do a cake for me to spice it up a bit and I smiled,

“Thanks girlfriend, I told her.

“I gat your back anytime you know, I’ll be there, Precious assured me.

The day of the knocking of door I slept at my father house while Desmond went home with his uncles, and my dad called me to his room that night.

“Dad what do you think about them? I asked him when I entered.

“Well, they have all said their mind even though they are not rich, and Desmond is a smart guy, I believe he can rise up you know and be the man you want him to be. Since he has his dreams and visions, I know you two can actualize them and live a better life, My dad replied and I happily hugged him.

“Thank you papa, you asked to see me, I said sitting up.

“Yes Joan, am scared. I don’t know if I will live up till that day to witness your wedding, but anyhow don’t let it come in between your happy day, my dad said and my eyes bulged out.

“What are you saying papa? I asked touching him.

“Joan stop it, you’re the senior and most matured that’s why am telling you this. I already submitted the will to my lawyer, anything just call him okay, God helping me I think I have secured a little thing behind, please be strong for them and keep the family in order, my dad said smiling and I’ve never been that weak before my whole life.
