I’m Vengeance - S01 E03

Without being told, I just knew that was a start of something new for I and Desmond. He slept over at my place that day and the next day we hit campus together where he helped me to register the carry overs again. It was painful to me but he assured me everything will okay,

“What about you? How are you planning to get your fees? I asked him but he only smiled.

“I don’t know yet but I can’t stop to have faith right? He asked touching my cheek and I smiled.

“I’ll attend lectures then, thanks for your help, I told him.

“Don’t mention and ermm I’ll go see what I can do to earn little cash you know, he said.

“Sure and be careful alright, I’ll call you when i get home, I said and wanted leaving but held me back.

“Hey, don’t do anything rash there okay, just ignore and act cool my love, he said and kissed me on my chin and I nodded and left smiling at him.

I got to the lecture hall and saw Precious, she was equally surprised to see me as she hugged me tightly,

“Thank God you’re here, you gat me worried yesterday, how are you now? She asked.

“I’m fine, I replied so lively as if nothing happened and she shook at my response and looked at me while I only smiled,

“Anyway I’ve registered for all the carryovers again, I said.

“What! You did what? Look I spoke with the course rep and he promised to do something to help you, just calm down, Precious said and I was only smiling.

“Babe I am writing the exams again, I don’t need anybody help this time around, I told her.

“Joan I don’t understand you o, let me guess, this is Desmond work right? She asked and I burst out laughing that my course mates turned looking at me but I cared less.

“What’s with you and Desmond? Common can’t Joan be happy? I asked.

“You’re acting strange and all of this happened after your sugar boy came, she replied.

“Well, that sugar boy is my boyfriend now and……….”you’re lying! She shouted cutting me short.

“Well do you want to hear all the juicy details because he was with me yesterday and even through out the night, indeed he’s a sugar boy, thanks for the name, I said hitting her playfully while she looked at me mouth opened.

“Hey why the face? are you not happy for me? I asked her.

“Joan this is not fair na, he no even get money you no try jare, Precious said with a frown.

“Oh money? Forget about that. The future is so bright and beautiful, hmm I can smell it, I said closing my eyes and Precious pushed me and I laughed.

“You’re getting crazy already, God every Desmond I reject! Precious said.

“Definitely not my Desmond madam, so no class? I asked shifting the topic aside…………..

Weeks passed and everything was going on smoothly, though I had to stay awake through out the night to read knowing Desmond found a job with a little pay, I didn’t want to disturb him but to continue from where he left me. Even though his work was very hectic, he still treks miles to meet me at home just to see me before resting for the day, he was one sweet soul I never knew existed. The week of examination approached and Desmond decided to sleep over at my place to help me out in the night, and like magic Joan was able to help herself out in the examination hall without my biro shaking in fear.

On the last day of my exams I came out and saw Desmond outside the hall sitting down and he hugged me,

“Congratulations baby, he said.

“Awwwn thank you, you didn’t go to work? I asked.

“Oh, I’m on break so I decided to see my princess, he replied and Precious approached us and cleared her throat.

“Hi, how was the exams? Desmond asked her.

“Twas okay, at least this coconut head was able to answer questions, Precious replied and I rolled my eyes.

“I’ll soon break your head, I said to her.

“I love coconuts though, very tasty, Desmond said holding my waist and I winked at Precious who shook her head.

“Fine. Na me una dey do longer throat ba? Una dey craze, Precious said and we burst out laughing at her……………

During the short break to resume for the next semester, I doubled my hustling. I have wasted enough money in school and needed to replace and even add more. The money I had left with me, I invested it in buying bags of rice, beans and cartons of food stuffs all stuck up in my shop.

One day Desmond bounced in happily and I knew he must have some good news to tell me with his mood. He told me he was connected to an oil mill where palm oil are being processed and I heaved,

“Why, are you not happy? He asked.

“That’s hard work love, I replied him.

“But I don’t mind dear, I just have to work so I can save up. The pay is better than where I was working my ass out and I can cheaply send oil to you to sell here to add to your profit, what do you think? He asked and I looked at him and he smiled holding me.

“Don’t worry everything will be alright okay, I’ll sure give you a life of a princess when I get settled alright, he said and kissed Me and i hugged him.

The vacation was over and I sold up everything and even bought more bags. Desmond oil was adding more money, and when I counted the money I had, I just smiled.

I got home tired from the market and had a shower but got a knock on the door, I wondered if it was Desmond but was so surprised to see my father outside the door. I didn’t know how to express the shock, he was the last person I could ever think of that can stand outside my door after I packed out from his house.

“Suddenly she doesn’t know how to greet anymore or welcome visitor right? He asked and I blinked my eyes.

“You’re no visitor daddy, please come in. Good Afternoon papa, I greeted as he slowly walked into my 1 room apartment looking around,

“So you’re still schooling? He asked when I gave him the only plastic chair I had to sit down.

“Yes papa, what can I over you? I asked.

“Nothing. I only passed by and remembered you telling me you live here, so I asked and ermmm I was pointed here, its been long you came to the house why? He asked and I rubbed my face.

“Sorry papa I’ve been too busy, but I hope everyone is fine? I asked back.

“Sure of course, so how is studies? He asked.

“I thank God, I’m coping, I replied and he nodded.

“Okay I’ll be leaving now, he said getting up.

“Papa let me get you something to eat at least, I said.

“Its alright, he said and kept something that looks like a cheque on my reading table.

“Use that to support your school, take care, he said and left the house and my mouth was just opened.

“Its a lie! Is this real life? I kept asking myself as I went to the table and picked up the cheque and saw 500,000 naira.

“Ahhhhh Joan see America wonder! I shouted jumping up and called up Desmond.

After 2 rings he picked up and the place was so noisy,

“Wassup love? He asked.

“Dear can you come over to the house after work? I asked.

“Sure why not? Hope you’re okay? He asked.

“Yea, see you later then, I replied and dropped the call and happily fell on my bed laughing with the cheque in my hand.

Desmond arrived home very tired and I quickly fixed him a bath,

“Thanks love you’re the sweetest, he said and wanted hugging me but I ran away from his sweaty body,

“That denial hurts you know, he said.

“Wash up first please, I said and he got into the bathroom.

“My dad came to the house today, I told him when he came out.

“Really? I hope there’s no problem? He asked.

“Nope, surprisingly he only dropped by to know if I’ve dropped out from school, I replied and he smiled shaking his head.

“So can I have my hug now? He asked I smiled climbing his back instead,

“Hey am hungry you’ll just finish me off, he said and I came down and gave him the cheque,

“What’s this? He asked.

“Dad gave it to me but I think you need it more. Use it to clear yourself in school, I replied and he looked at the cheque and shook his head stretching it back to me.

“Dad gave it you because he wants to help out, why not use it? He asked.

“What do you mean? I’ve watched you toil so hard to save up so you can clear yourself from school, how long will you continue? I’m your girlfriend right? Then let me help you, I can manage, I said keeping his hand down as he stood weak looking at me.

“You don’t have to do this you know, he softly said.

“Common love, I want to hail you on your corper uniform, my baby will be so handsome on it, I said holding him smiling and he hugged me tight…………

I resumed school and merged it with my business and it was getting more stressful for me, while Desmond was busy running around to settle his matter. But the most beautiful part of it all was when the results came out and I couldn’t stop crying, this time not because of failure but the result of my hard labor was not in vain. I passed! I’ve never been so proud like I was that day, and that motivated me to study more harder.

Precious was getting confused day by day with the whole turn out of events, and she was like,

“I think Desmond is one lucky bite for you”.

Few weeks later, Desmond will be leaving for his service. I didn’t know if I should be happy for him or sad, I was confused as I didn’t want to let him go on the day he was set to leave.

Precious was with me and Desmond kept promising he’ll be visiting from time to time,

“I’ll come back my love and we’ll be together again. Its only for a while okay, just pray for me, he said cleaning my tears and i sniffed.

“I’m sorry am acting selfish, I’ll miss you, I said.

“And I’ll miss you more, I love you okay, he said and kissed me on my forehead and went into the vehicle as I closed my eyes hurt.

“Joan, he’ll come back na, Precious said touching me.

“I know but am just scared, I heard the north isn’t safe, I told her.

“Hey stop being negative, he’s not the first to go there and he’s going to come back, remember he said you should pray for him, she said and I nodded cleaning my tears and she smiled.

“See you crying like a baby because of love. Hiannnn this love can do wonders oo! Precious shouted clapping her hands and I couldn’t help but laugh.

“Get out silly girl, I said hitting her as we strolled back home…………..
