Desmond kept calling to know how am feeling but I told him I’m alright. The next day I met Precious in campus and was wondering what brought her to school but she ignored the question and asked about Desmond rather. I heaved and rubbed my face, God knows I found it difficult to sleep last night after finding out Desmond age and she saw I was not alright.

“Are you really serious Joan? No tell me, because I don’t understand how you could allow yourself fall in love in less than 2 weeks with a small boy who can’t take care of himself sef, how did you get there? Precious asked and I scoffed.

“What do you even know about love? Abeg rest, I said.

“At least love should pay my bills or will you be the one to pay his bills the other way round? She asked and I smiled.

“Precious stop bugging me with Desmond okay, na feelings I just get I no kill person and last I checked age is just a number, so forget it, I said and overheard my course mates talking about checking of results.

“What result is that? I asked Precious.

“That will be the carryovers, she coldly replied.

“Ahh its out? Let’s go check it out na I need to check it o very important, I said taking my bag and Precious sluggishly followed me.

When I saw the results, my heart began to beat fast and I was so speechless.

“Joan, I thought you solved this? Why all the straight F’s? Precious asked and I looked at her and walked away which she shouted running after me.

I located the course rep immediately and held his shirt,

“What did you use the money I paid you for? Didn’t you say you will solve it out? I shouted while he struggled with me.

“Joan Joan! Precious shouted separating us.

“What do you think I used your dirty money for? If school is not for you why not go do farm work, nonsense! The guy shouted and I attempted to hold him for a fight but I was held.

“Just imagine the rubbish! With the level of her failure what does she think I can do for her? The guy kept ranting while Precious dragged me out.

I tried stopping myself from shedding tears but it was not working, at that point I knew it was over.

“Joan please its okay, Precious said cleaning my tears but I nodded and slowly left.

I got home and laid down in my bed closing my eyes tight. Everyone was right about me, am just a complete dunce and failure. I should have accepted it a long time ago but rather I fought to prove them wrong, but the hard I try, the more reality keeps dawning on me that am a failure and a big embarrassment.

My heart was broken, how will I face my father and tell him I’m now a dropout? The face of my siblings when they will hear it made me broke down more. My father practically humiliates me in front of them calling me a good for nothing child wasting his money when ever I come home with a poor result. He will show their result to me and they were always leading in their different classes, then he will ask them to sing a song of failure for me.

They had no iota of respect for me, neither could I beat them when they go wrong because he will tear me alive. Ahhhh yes I’m the only child of my mother and she died after giving birth to me. So you see I’m just alone and that made Me leave the house when I was able to save up so I can have some peace and quietness.

A knock came on the door and I wondered if Precious followed me home. The knock came again and again and I sniffed cleaning my tears and opened up to see Desmond.

“What are you doing here? I quickly asked.

“Pardon? He asked but I went in which he slowly entered looking at me.

“Why are you crying? What happened? He asked.

“Its none of your business, I replied cleaning my face.

“Hey what’s wrong? Looks like you’re avoiding me or did I miss out in anything? He asked.

“Are you here for the tutorial? I won’t be doing it anymore sorry, I replied.

“What? I mean why? He asked.

“Because I am dropping out okay, you get it? I asked back and he came close to me.

“You’re dropping out now? Are you aware you’re in your finals? Why will you do such a thing? He asked and I smiled shaking my head but tears kept pouring.

“Because that’s the right thing to do, maybe school was not for me, I replied.

“But you’re picking up, its not too late you know, I can help you, he said.

“Help me? Can’t you see I don’t want it anymore? Maybe I was picking up but what can it do? I’m done for Desmond just forget it, I said and he touched me.

“Joan it’s so unfair for you to drop out now you know, you can still push on okay I’m here for you, he said and I angrily hit his hands from my body.

“And what do you Care? Oh is it because you’ll lose your job? I said I am no longer interested just respect that! I shouted on him.

“Are you hearing yourself? Do you think I am here because of your money? Remember you were the one who insisted to pay when I offered to help you out, but since you don’t want my help go ahead and suck around I don’t care! He shouted back.

“Fine now use the door and get out! I shouted and he bowed his head.

“Joan just calm down okay, I’m sorry, he said standing up and Precious call came on phone but I ignored.

“Can I at least know what happened? Joan please stop doing this, I thought you were my friend or was I wrong? He asked but I was quiet and slowly he hugged me, just what I needed.

There I told him all that happened and he listened quietly and heaved when I was done.

“What are you scares? You repeating the exams? He asked and I sniffed.

“I’ll be having an extra year when my mates are all far, I replied.

“Really? You’re bothered about your mates going far? What about me? Or do you think I’m different from you yet I have not killed myself, he said and j kept my head on his chest.

“I don’t think I can do this anymore, what I don’t understand is where I went wrong? I attend all lectures but I seem not to get anything, even though I try to read I’m still not getting it, was I cursed or something? I asked.

“Sshhhhh just stop it Joan, last I checked I saw an improvement in you and you’re just about to kill it. You’re going to sit for all the exams again, don’t worry about it we will study together and you are going to pass this time. Do you trust me? He asked raising my face to meet with his and I gave a weak smile.

“Why are you 25 years? I suddenly asked and he burst out laughing.

“Now I see, so it was my age huh? But tell me, why are you bothered with it? He asked.

“Nah forget it, I replied.

“No I won’t o, because I need to know why you suddenly changed after I told you my age, or were you expecting a sugar daddy age? He asked and I smiled shaking my head.

“Do you realize you’re talking to your senior? I asked him and he nodded and smiled.

“I’m aware of that, he calmly said and I looked at him.

“Really? I asked and he smiled and took my hand.

“Were you disturbed about that? Probably I’m the age mate of your younger ones at home and you think you can’t have anything to do with me right? He asked and I scoffed.

“What are you talking about? I asked pretending not to know.

“I can see it, I study people you know and I can tell what you’re feeling. But trust me Joan when I say its nothing, I like you and I respect you also, he said and I smiled taking my hand slowly from his.

“What do you think can happen between us? I asked.

“Tutorial, he replied and began to laugh and I shook my head.

“Are you hungry? Don’t worry I’ll fix something for you to eat, he said.

“No I am not hungry, i said.

“Yes you’re going to eat because there will be a long tutorial today, he said already going to my stove.

“But I told you not anymore, I said and he looked at me.

“You are not dropping out Joan and I won’t let that happen, he said and I fell on the bed saying nothing as I heard him making noise with the pots and plates.

I slept off in the process and he woke me up. I saw a plate of rice and beans before me and smiled,

“Seriously? I asked.

“Yea eat something okay, he replied.

“What about you? I asked.

“Nah don’t worry am fine, he replied.

“No way, you are going to get a spoon and join me else I won’t eat this, I said and he hands up.

“Okay ma’am, going there now, he said and got a spoon and we ate together but I countlessly choked with pepper while he laughed.

“Desmond you should have told me you’re still offended we had a little fight earlier na, this is too much, I said trying to catch a breathe.

“Sorry na, I enjoy pepper a lot and suddenly forgot the food isn’t mine. But didnt you said you love pepper? he asked.

“yes but not lots of wicked pepper, I replied and gulped down another water while he looked at me smiling.

“And why are you smiling? I asked.

“Maybe because the pepper looks good on you, he replied and I respectfully hands up from the food.

“It was nice doing business with you, I told him and took my phone to return Precious call because I felt relieved.

Desmond began the tutorial after we rested, and I must confess I enjoyed every part of his teaching. I once got a tutor to help me out but he grew tired of me, and that was not all, i heard my weakness in every Tom and Harry mouth around. I felt so discouraged and decided never to get a tutor again, but there was this connection between us that made things simpler I can’t explain, and at that point I was glad I met him.

He gave me few brain work to do and sat aside watching me to do it, but all that clouded my head was failure and a voice telling me “Joan, you’re wasting your time”. And when it happens that way the biro begans to shake in my hand but Desmond quickly held it.

“What are you thinking? He asked me.

“I can’t do it, I replied him.

“Are you kidding me? You keep listening to voices that are not yours, okay fine listen to my voice now, you can do it Joan! Now write, he said pushing the book to me and I swallowed and got set to write again..

When I was done, I fearfully gave him the book to look at it and he smiled,

“Congratulations you did it, you see? He asked and I let out a deep breathe I didn’t know I was holding,then he came close to make a few correction on my answers.

I couldn’t believe it that I could answer questions on my own, in that excitement I kissed him and immediately apologized when I saw what I did.

“I feel used now, Desmond said.

“I’m sorry I didn’t mean it, I said.

“Then mean it now, he said and drew me close for a kiss……….
