“Honey, this boy has been so ungrateful. After all what we did to him he still had the guts to steal your goods and sell them”

Mrs. Ola said as she descended the stairs. I tried to make eye contact with Mrs. Ola so her conscience could at least judge her a little but it seemed she had no conscience left. I thought of denying the allegations and telling me. John that Mrs. Ola was responsible for the theft but it would land me in more trouble. Mr. John trusted his wife to a fault.

“Jade, for the last time, I will be lineant to you, but you will have to leave my house. I would have landed you in jail, but because of my relationship with your family I won’t. You will need to find a job elsewhere” he said bluntly.

I begged and begged some more but Mr. John paid deaf ears.

“You have 3 days to park your things and leave” he said as he picked up the remote and increased the volume of the tv set coolval stories and ignored me. I stood up and retired to my room. I hit the door so hard it almost broke. I leaned on the back of the door and thought about a lot of things…why would Mrs. Ola take things this far simply because I refused to dance to her tune?

It began to occur to me that even if I had danced to her tune she still would have nailed me one day because her wickedness knew no bounds. I sat on the floor of my room, as hopeless as a cow tied up and ready for slaughter. I wasn’t sure of my next move. My mom would be disappointed seeing me return to the village in a deplorable condition after all my stay in town coupled with the recent death of my dad. The villagers would mock her…but I just wasn’t sure of what to do next. Mrs. Ola took me unawares. She was indeed smart. She was aware Mr. John would eventually find out about the goods so she just set me up.

I heard a knock on the door.

“Who is it?” I said as I opened. It was Shola.

“I heard the discussion. I just want to say, am sorry.” She said

“No, don’t be sorry. It’s not your fault. It’s Mrs. Ola and her evil. You don’t have to be sorry about anything.” I said, trying to make her not worry about me.

“Happy birthday” she said and handed me a parcel. No one had wished me a birthday in a long time. I had even forgotten I had a birthday

“Mmm, thank you. But how did you know”? I asked looking dazzled

“You threw a piece of paper, your birth certificate. I read it.” She said…

“Thanks again. Am grateful” I said, showing more appreciation.

“Jade, I really do like you. I have no idea how you feel about me but am not the kind of lady that hides her feelings. I will give you sometime to think about it and get back to me.” She said and took her leave.

I closed the door and unrapped the parcel. To my greatest suprise, in it was a brand new Samsung Galaxy S7 edge. I switched it on and there was a recharged Sim card. I shouted with joy like someone who had won a ticket to heaven. I had no idea Shola could go an extra mile to get me such luxury.

I went out, finished what I was doing and before I knew it, it was dark. I lay on my bed and thought about Anne. I wondered how she was doing at the inn. I didn’t have money and things didn’t go as planned. But I was ready to check on her the following morning. I fell asleep and some noise of people’s voices interrupted my sleep. I woke up and there was Mrs. Ola and the stranger. The streetlight was on so I had a clearer view this time. An idea hit me…I jumped to the head of my bed, grabbed my smartphone and recorded their activities….
