“How can you be this heartless? Why treat Jade like that?”Shola yelled at her sister.

“He’s an ordinary gateman. Get over it” Ola responded as she crossed her feet over the table.

“He’s a human being like you and I. So don’t give me that crap, Ola, don’t dare. Blood flows through his veins also..

“Hmm am beginning to suspect you…the way I’ve been observing you it seems he’s been f***cking you, hasn’t he?” Ola asked, as she put her feet off the table and looked her sister in the eyes. I had been peeping from the window and I saw some jealousy in Ola’s face as she asked that question. She was only suspecting, wishing it wasn’t true

“What? Look I don’t have the strength to drag words with you. But from today you will give Jade food and his workload will reduce. I am not asking you.” Shola countered…tempers were already flaring. I giggled to myself hearing Shola say that.

“Whose gonna make me? You?” Mrs. Ola asked as she laughed a mocking laughter in an unethical way.

“I still remain your elder sister and you will obey me” Shola said and marched upstairs. Ola muttered some words to herself as she grumbled but I couldn’t hear a thing. I rushed into my room and closed the door.

I was contented and satisfied like a man who had achieved everything in life. The sound of Mr. Johns car interrupted my thoughts. . He had just returned from his business trip.

“Welcome oga oh” I said, waving as he drove past me into the compound

“How are you, Jade” he asked as he stepped out of his car and went into the mansion. I returned to my room and changed into my works-suit. I treamed the flowers and parked the dirt into the rubbish can. I also thought about Anne, how she was faring. I planned on asking Shola about what we agreed initially. I didn’t have more money to pay for an extra night at the inn for Anne. I returned to my room and prepared to take my bath and freshen up when I heard a shout from the living room. Mr. John called my name in a very rude and annoying manner, I didn’t want to respond initially. Not even my dad called my name in such disrespect as mr. John did. “Na your papa you dey call like that, idiot” I said in a very low tune just to pour our some of my anger…The only thing that made me to answer was that he was my boss and I still owed my humility and respect. I put on my shirt with my kaki shorts and rushed to find out why he called me in that manner. I knew something was wrong…

“Yes sir you called me” I said I’m mediately I entered the living room

“Jade, the salary I pay you here, is it not enough? Or can’t you at least request that it be added? Why steal goods from my warehouse? Don’t you know it’s from those goods that I get money? What runs through your mind when you steal them?” Mr. John asked in a calm manner though I could sense anger. My blood pressure burst up hearing such words come from Mr. John. I didn’t think he would suspect me of stealing after all this while….I was disappointed as well as suprised. My voice began to tremble. Mr. John was a man of action. I knew what he was capable of. Not defending myself properly would cost me everything.

“Sir, w-what are you talking about? Please, I didn’t steal your goods. I am contented with the salary I get. Why would I steal your goods? Am not a thief. I can’t steal your goods na. I know better than that. I swear by my father, I haven’t been stealing your goods”

I responded as I immediately went down on my knees and begged for my life. I knew my stay in the mansion was just about to end had I not been able to defend myself properly. I begged more but Mr. John only kept quiet and stared at the table without even blinking his eyes. I heard footsteps coming from upstairs. I saw Mrs. Ola, smiling as she descended the staircase with a smile as evil as the devil’s…

…who could have told Mr. John such lie about me?…
