I watched Collette packing back her things into her suitcase. She hadn’t brought much with her so it didn’t take long before she was done packing.

Standing to her full height, she turned around to meet my eyes.

Her eyes held mine until I was the first to give ground. We were the only ones in my room. Charlotte was downstairs, preparing something for us to eat.

” I’ll be leaving tomorrow, Lucy,” Collette drew out a chair and sat beside my bed where I laid. ” Take some time to rest. I’ll call you from time to time.”

I didn’t say anything. I was pale and without life. My eyes had sunk inside my head and my face had gone stiff and dead. I wasn’t the girl I was before. I was changed.

Earlier before we arrived home, we’d been to the hospital to run some tests on me. I was fortunate not to have contracted any disease from the rape but my internal tissues were torn. It’d take some time for that to heal up.

Meanwhile, I was prescribed with some drugs to help me get to my feet. Charlotte and Collette had stopped at an eatery to get me to eat something—anything.

But I wouldn’t eat. I had no appetite. I just wanted to be left alone.

” I’m sorry for what happened, Lucy,” Collette said, holding my hand. ” This is all my fault.”

I said nothing. I could only stared into her eyes as she spoke.

” I’m speaking on behalf of Chole,” she continued, squeezing my hand tighter. ” I understand if you hate me now but please don’t hate Chole. She means well for you. The damage’s been done. What matters right now is you’re alive.”

She paused as she leaned over and kissed my forehead. ” Lucy, I’ve learnt a lot from you. You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I won’t stop you anymore and neither will Chole. You’re free to date whoever you want. However, you can’t date me. I’m leaving for a life of my own. Everyone has their journey. Yours has just began.”

She let go off my hand. ” You’ll learn to forgive me, Lucy. I turned you into something you weren’t supposed to be and it’d forever hurt my conscience. That’s why from now onwards, I’m letting you go. It’s your decision to change. No one else can change you but yourself. I can understand if you hate men after such a horrible incident like this. Just bear it in mind your late dad was a man. There are more good men out there but that’s neither here nor there. What I’m saying in essence is this: find your happiness and stick to it. Make your own choices. Don’t let what happened to you turn you into becoming someone like me. I’m rotten, I’m no good, I’m not fit to love anyone. I don’t want you to be that way. Stay true to who you are, Lucy. I assure you, no matter what happens, despite the fact we’re sisters and….. and girls, I’ll always love you.”

I wanted to say something but I just stared at her without saying a word. I looked away, aware of a tight feeling in my chest.

The door to my room opened and Charlotte poked her head in. ” Umm… Collette? Dad called. He wants to speak with everyone.”

We all sat on different chairs in the living room, staring at Charlotte’s laptop which was carefully placed on the table for everyone to see.

Suddenly, Benjamin’s face appeared on the screen. Charlotte raised the volume to the max so we could hear him.

He was in the bedroom wearing a thick sweater. I could hear my mom’s voice at the background. She was probably in the bathroom.

” Hello girls” Benjamin Said, his eyes gazing at his daughters. ” I made a promise to make a video call today. I’ll be quick about this.”

His eyes went over to Collette who was seated with her arms and legs crossed.

” What are your questions, Chi-Chi?”

Collette replied. ” The divorce.”

Benjamin took in a deep breath, then started. ” Chi-Chi. Your mother and I fell out of love for each other. After we got married and had you girls, everything changed. The love wasn’t there anymore. I was too busy with work, I neglected my duties as a husband. Your mother… She umm…how will I put it. She’s a s£x freak. Our s£x life was too poor. Unlike your mother, I’m not Soo crazy about s£x. I could get along a month without s£x but your mother was a different case. She loved s£x but I was too busy to attend to her needs as a husband should. I was always Working, always coming home late and tired. I was chasing after my promotion. I wanted my family to lack nothing. I thought all a woman ever wanted was money, a home, a car and a happy family. Those were my major objectives. I seemed to have forgotten that in any relationship involving couples, s£x is a basic necessity.”

Benjamin paused, taking his time so the words would sink into his daughters head.

” Your mother and I decided not to tell you girls the reason behind the divorce. However, I’ll tell you, Chi-Chi. But once I tell you, I wouldn’t want you hating or blaming your mom over our divorce. If there’s anyone who needs to take the blame here, put the blame on me.”

No one said anything. We waited, tensed for what he was about to drop.

Then Benjamin Said it. ” Your mother began having an affair behind my back. I was sent for a training course in London. It was going to be a four month training course. You girls were little kids then. Because your mother’s s£xual needs couldn’t be met, she kept a secret lover.”

He paused again as he rubbed his wrists. ” Your mother has always been a faithful woman. She just couldn’t bear it any longer. I was too busy for her, too preoccupied with paying the bills and everything. I wanted the best for my family, I got Carried away and neglected the duties of my family. Eventually, I got to find out about her secret lover. I felt hurt but I knew it was all my fault. We no longer loved each other anymore and because I wasn’t always available for your mother when she needed me the most, it only hasten the divorce. We came together, sat down and had a long talk together as husband and wife. She wasn’t sorry she cheated on me. She claims it’s all my fault. She loved her new lover more than anything and she was ready to be with him. And so we agreed to divorce, share our wealth and go our separate ways. It was for the best. Initially, I suggested we don’t divorce because I kept thinking about you girls but your mother insisted it won’t work between us anymore. What use is marriage when you both don’t love each other anymore. The divorce was done quietly behind you girls back and we shared everything fifty-fifty. We also shared you girls amongst ourselves. I made her a fine settlement because she chose you. I took Chole and that was the end of the divorce.”

Collette knew the rest of what he was about to say for she spoke out loud.

” And then you came into our rooms, packed up and separated our family,” Collette said.

Benjamin nodded sadly. ” I wanted to give your mother another chance. I wanted us to start afresh but it didn’t work out. She was already in love with her lover. Once a woman stops loving you, that’s the end of it. I can’t stop her. I got to learn she got married to her lover a couple of months after our divorce. I believe he’s your stepdad now.”

Collette said nothing. I watched her as she clenched and unclenched her hands. Charlotte was also in the same moody mood.

The twins were as shocked as the news itself. It was the first time the reasons behind their parents divorce was revealed to them.

Collette finally spoke. ” Was this why you chose not to tell us? So we won’t get hurt?”

” We wanted to protect you girls from the truth over the divorce,” Benjamin Said. ” Don’t take it too badly. It was for the best. I would’ve done anything. Anything to save my marriage but unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be. We had to go out separate ways.”

There was a moment silence then Collette spoke.

” It’s alright,” she took a deep breath and let it out. ” I finally understand.”

” Does your stepdad treat you well?” He asked.

Collette nodded. ” Yes he does. He treats mom and I very well.”

Benjamin gave a bitter smile. ” I wished I could’ve done better, Chi-Chi. I’m a very lousy father and husband.”

Collette shook her head. ” You were a lousy husband not a lousy Father.”

Benjamin smiled. ” Thank you Chi-Chi. Despite my flaws, I always have time for you girls. I just didn’t dedicated much for your mother.”

Collette said nothing. Her eyes wandered over to Charlotte. They stared at each other for a while then she returned her eyes back to me.

I was staring away from my step sisters. I knew they were both watching me but I hadn’t the will to meet their eyes.

Then Collette spoke. ” Is Lucy’s mom there?”

Benjamin looked behind his shoulder. ” She is kinda busy.”.

Collette’s eyes went cold. ” I want to talk to her.”

Suddenly, Charlotte and I stiffened. We both turned our heads to stare at Collette.

What was she up to?

Benjamin had no idea why she wanted to speak to my mom but he stood up all the same and went to the other room.

” What are you trying to do?” Charlotte asked but Collette said nothing.

Her eyes were fixed on the screen of the laptop, her face deadpan and set.

I watched her, aware of a sickeneing feeling at the end of my guts.

Minutes later, mom and Benjamin returned back to the screen.

Mom was in a dress. She must’ve been coming out of the shower when Benjamin mentioned Collette wanted to speak to her. She had quickly put on some dress.

Mom looked happy to see us. She waved. ” Hey girls, how are y’all doing over there?”

Collette greeted. ” Good morning, ma’am.”

Charlotte followed suite but I didn’t greet mom as my step sisters did.

” Baby?” Mom stared my way. ” What’s wrong. You look…you look pale.”

If she knew the reason why I’m pale, I wondered what’d be her reaction.

Collette suddenly rose to her feet and faced the screen. ” Ma’am, I wanted to talk to you, about Lucy.”

Charlotte and I started from our seats to gape at her.

What the hell is she doing?!

” Well, what about Lucy?” Mom asked, holding the hands of her husband, Benjamin as they both watched us.

Collette met my eyes and I saw them shining.

She whispered. ” You’ll learn to forgive me, Lucy.”

It was then I realized what she wanted to say.

Before I could move a muscle, Collette turned sharply to the laptop and announced with a loud voice.

” I AM A LESBIAN!”
