I almost dreaded what he was about to say.

“I’m leaving.”

I looked at him in stunned silence.

My mind scrambled to understand what he had just

said, struggling to connect the dots. Even when the

words started to sink in, I refused to acknowledge

them. I convinced myself that I simply misheard

him; that my exhausted mind was only playing tricks

on me.

It just didn’t make sense.

Nothing made sense.

He took my silence as a cue to go on. “Dad’s going

back to New York at the end of the week.” Even as he

said the words, I couldn’t make myself believe them.

“And I’m coming with him.”

I started to shake my head, feeling a newfound sense

of panic setting in.

“No.” I could hear the frantic note in the way I spoke.

“No, he can’t force you to go with him. Seth,

he can’t.”

At first, silence, and then the words, “He’s not forcing

me.”

”Is it Isabelle? Is she—is she trying to get rid of you

or—or—”

“No, Ky.” His voice was nothing but a mere

murmur, but his words sliced swiftly through the

silence. “It’s my choice.”
