The Lion’s Den - S01 E20

Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 20

The unit of police which was inside there looked at each other knowing very well what was going to happen to Edmond at that moment.

“What the hell do you think you are doing beating our own boss in his own home?” One of the guys asked drawing close to him as he stretched himself

“Okay gentlemen, let me tell you something. There has been a serious misunderstanding here ” Edmond said trying to buy time for escape.

“Okay, then why didn’t you stop beating our boss if you knew that there has been a misunderstanding?”

“Actually, …..” Edmond started talking as he looked around.

In a split second, he dashed heading to the door at a very high speed. The unit at once dashed at the door. As the door couldn’t allow them all at once to get out, they bumped into each other and fell down. This fall gave Edmond splitting yards away from them. With adrenaline super charged in his body, Edmond ran to rescue his life. The speed was so amazing that he couldn’t recall the last time he ever run like that in his all entire life. He got to where he had packed his car and got inside it. With trembling hands, he tried to key in the keys into the ignition but the keys fell down.

“Shit” he shouted reaching for the keys down the driver’s seat.

He got the keys and keyed into the ignition. As he was about to start it, he saw the unit of police less than thirty metres from where he was. Quickly the engine started and he engaged the gears and dashed off at high speed. The vehicle rushed squicked as it got into the main road. Unfortunately, after making about fifty metres away from where it ha been packed, the car started jecking.

“Please, not at this point” he shouted.

The vehicle became so stubborn and paid no attention to him as it went on jerking vigorously till it stopped. Seeing the vehicle stopping, the unit ran towards it and as Edmond was about to get out, blows and punches on his face were what welcomed him to the breeze of the night.

Edmond was beaten blue black by the unit in a way this English language can not fully describe to reach it’s real depth.

12 HOURS LATER

Edmond lay there in the hospital bed unconscious with oxygenated tubes to him. His face and body parts mostly bandaged. A little while later, the doctor walked in to check on him and tried talking to him. He then slowly opened his eyes looking at the ceiling board up of him. He was surprised with where he was at that moment as it was not expected.

“How did I get here?” He asked faintly.

“You were attacked by suspected bandits and left you to die in your car.”the doctor said.

“Why now?”

“The police are still trying to find out why they did that. Be calm you will be fine.”

“So no relative of mine has come here?”

“There is a lady outside who came after you were brought here. I will call her in as I go out” said the doctor walking on.

A little while later when the doctor had left, a woman slowly walked into the room where Edmond was lying down as he ha been put in an alone ward.

Edmond lay there looking at the woman in disbelief as she stood looking at him. She was the last person he expected there to be by his bedside.

“Hello, how are you feeling?” She said.

“Agatha, how did you come here?”

“Mark called me and told me about your situation that you are in hospital so I had to come”

“Why? You know we are divorced”

“I am doing things for my children. I don’t want my children not to have a biological father.”

“Let me make things straight here. We are and will never get back together. Any charms you may want to use won’t work at all.”

“I have no time for charms. Am already over you. I came for my children.”

“Then we have an understanding.” He said facing the other side.

Agatha sat there by the side as she scrolled down how phone. Just then a called came in to her phone. She then picked up and answered in a soft voice.

“Hello” she answered.

“Yes am a bit tied up”

“What?”

“Oh come on. It’s soon” she said as she walked outside the room.

Edmond knew very well that there was nothing between him and her but the phone which said it all that it was a man on the other side, gave him those goose bumps feeling. She felt like a man was cheating with his woman. He felt some jealous in him though he had no wish of wanting her back.

In that afternoon, Agatha sat there in the hospital ward busy in her phone while Edmond lay there in bed. A lot of thoughts were running in his head as he sat there. He remembered how peaceful his life was a few months ago. He then thought of how calamities came on him and turned his life upside down.

“Mark is calling,he wants to talk to you” Agatha said passing the phone to Edmond making him come out of the thoughts.

“Mark” he answered as Agatha held the phone to his ear as he couldn’t hold it.

“How are you feeling Ed?”

“You fool where are you? How can you leave me there? Were you out of your mind?” Edmond asked angrily.

“Edmond I did not leave you there. I just escaped for my life. So you wanted me to carry you on my shoulders? Of course not. Am just glad you are still alive”

“And why are you not coming to be by my bedside?”

“I can’t risk that. What if the guys want to deal with me the moment I pop up there?”.

“Whatever! So why have you called?”

“I wanted to check on you and tell you the food news”

“What good news?”

“That the money has been paid for the job and a surplus of k1500 has been added.”

“Good. If you dare touch a coin of my share count yourself a dead man”

“I can’t. Talk later. I will see you at an opportune time.”

A MONTH LATER

Edmond was slowly getting in form as he had healed from his wounds. His body was back in shape though at times he felt some sharp pains in his body. It’s like the police officer who dealt with him was over with him after beating him to an almost death experience.

With the money he had gathered from the Anyamphamvu LTD, he started renting his own apartment and furnished it. He was slowly enjoying his own company. As for his car, he was waiting for the time when he would work on it and then sell it as he said it almost made him get killed due to its malfunctioning.

On this day which was a Wednesday, Mark went to visit his friend around mid morning. He went on this day at this time knowing very well that there was no job for them to do at that time.

The two gentlemen sat down as they enjoyed some lagers and caught up on several topics.

“Edmond, I have been hiding something from you. I need to tell you now”

“What?!”

“Since that police incidence you have never wanted to talk of doing our business any more. That’s why I have been keeping this to myself.”

“What? Why can’t you tell me?”

“Okay. Women have been coming to seek for our help and now they are won me. I have been telling them to wait on my partner to heal sothat we can do the business.”

“What?”

“Listen to me. About 7 women have come and they even made some down payments. Right now with me for our job we have K17,000 cash and when we do the jobs, we will have another K12,000. I have been exorbitant in my charges to send them away but they are determined and they are paying.” Mark said.

Edmond kept quiet thinking about it and the risks attached to the jobs. He stood up and looked at a far distance at nothing specifically.

“I can’t do it with you. Am sorry. Money is not anything. I have my feet on so I can’t go further with this life”

“Edmond, you are not listening.we at talking of K30,000.”

“My life is worthy more than that”

“Okay, it’s sad that you don’t want to do this anymore but what if I told you that one of the person on the list is that chairman at the market who ruined your marriage?”

“What?!” Exclaimed Edmond then turning to Mark.

“Yes he is on number 4 on the list.”

“He should be the first one now.”

“Oh really? Actually the lady offered…..”

“I don’t care about the offer because that one specifically, I can deal with him for free. And why didn’t I think of beating him up earlier? That fool ruined my marriage. Agatha was a beautiful lady I loved with all I had. We should do it tonight”

“Why in so much a hurry?”

“I love Agatha!” He shouted.

“You love her?”

“I mean I loved her” he said correcting his silly mistake.
