The people there were surprised with Edmond’s uncle yearn for him to finish the sentence and tell them the decision as they were not rushing anywhere. The words coming from Edmond’s mouth were being given the most undivided attention at that forum knowing very well that he was the principle decision maker.

“Okay uncle, I will tell you now my decision.” Said Edmond.

“Yes tell us. Don’t keep us hanging.”

“Okay, like I was saying, am grateful for what Agatha did to me throughout the time we were together. And as we all know, it’s very difficult for a man to forgive his woman’s infidelity. So, as a man as I am, I can’t put up with the fact that she slept with another man and also brought another chaos on me. So, my decision is to go separate ways” he said.

“Be clear. You mean you go on separation so that when you calm youget back again?” Asked his uncle.

“No. Disolving the marriage. Ending it” said Edmond.

At that point all the people there were silent as they looked at each other. Agatha who was not expecting that decision stood up and crawled near Edmond where she then knelt and started pleading with him.

“Please Edmond, you know very well that I did not do it intentionally and I was not planning on doing it again, please forgive me.” She sobbed while pleading.

“What if we get into another challenge and another man presets you with man or any opportunity, won’t you do that again?” Asked Edmond.

“I swear, I can’t do that again”

“But I can’t trust you anymore and for the benefit of both of us, let’s go separate ways.”

“Edmond….”

“That’s my decision and its final. Move away from me” he said sternly.

Seeing how serious and stone hearted he was as he spoke those words, Agatha walked back to her seat as she cleaned up her tears which couldn’t stop running down. All the family members there were just watching the drama unfolding there.

“Our in-law, we have heard your decision but think of your children. Would you love them to grow up with step parents?” Asked uncle Malema.

“Ask him for me. I asked him that question too” Edmond’s uncle added.

“As for the children, I really wanted to have them grow together with us but it’s like their mother didn’t want.” Edmond said.

“Edmond, you need to compromise some things in order to ensure the smooth life of your children. A good parent will do anything for the sake of their children good welfare.” Added uncle Malema.

“That’s where we take it all wrong. I can not ruin my life, lead a miserable life with someone I don’t feel special about for the sake of my children. The children will grow up, get married and enjoy their lives while I ruined my youthful time for their sake with a woman who cheated on me. Aikona. I won’t do that. My happiness and peace of mind matters here.” Edmond said.

“Edmond, your children…..” Edmond’s uncle started.

“Uncle, let me make one thing clear here, no matter what you tell me to do, I will not change my decision. There is no marriage between her and I. Never.” He said.

With these words from him, the uncles saw that there was no need of continuing to reason with him as he was already decided. They knew that going on with him was like making a fool of themselves.

“Anyway, since you don’t want to go any further with this marriage, you can sue your wife to court so that you divorce her there” said uncle Malema.

The discussions were finalised and the two parties settled on waiting for the summon to the court so that the marriage could be dissolved.

On the next day, Edmond was home sitted watching a football match alone. He was doing all he could to keep his mind away from imagining another man mounting his wife. Whenever he imagined his wife being smashed by another man, his rage grew tense for his wife and worse for the chairman. He would curse and wish that he would deal with the chairman the day he would set his eyes on him and have an opportunity to.

Just then his friend mark came to his place visiting in order to console him as he knew that he was going through a rough patch of his life. That’s what friends are for to help when in time of need. The two gentlemen sat there as they enjoyed the game. They soon started catching up on how Mark was fairing after his gym got burnt.

“It’s just a matter of time. I will start again scouting for something but life is really difficult for me and the people who paid membership to the gym are on me” he said.

“I am sorry to hear that.”

“Thanks. And your issue, how was the result of the seating?”

“Oh that. Just like I told you, I decided to end our marriage”

“Don’t you think this decision is irrational. You are still too emotional”

“Am emotional but that doesn’t affect my thinking capabilities in any way.”

“So when are you planing on getting this divorce?”

“I have already summoned her to the court. I was there at the court so our date is next week Tuesday”

“Anyway, I can’t say much since things have already reached that level but they won’t easily divorce you”

“Not easily divorce us? What do you mean?”

“Since you got your marriage certificate at the council, you will be given six months period before they confirm your divorce. That’s the procedure for those who got their marriage certificates from the council. But if it was at the court, it will be on the same day”

“We got the marriage certificate from the court”

“Oh okay, then it will be instant”.

“Yes. I am really hurt with her sight. It’s so weird that someone who made you head over heels could detest you in such a way in just few days”

“There is a thin line between love and hurt”

———————————————————–

On the Tuesday of the following week, Edmond went to the court as it was their scheduled date to have their hearing. Edmond went there with his friend mark and his uncle. Upon getting there, he found Agatha and his family already there. When he got out of the car, before he could make a step away from the car, he just heard a familiar voice calling him behind him. When he turned, he found that it was Agatha.

“What do you want?” Edmond asked.

“Edmond please, are you going to do this?”

“Hell yeah am doing it. Infact I already divorced you”

“Edmond, you know how much I love you and how you mean to me, please give me a second chance” she pleaded.

“Please, we have come to sort out issues, don’t make a public disgrace of yourself” he said then walking away.

.

A few minutes later, it time for Edmonds and Agatha’s case to be heard. The case gist was ready to the judges after which they asked the complainant the present his side of the story.

“Okay, so your decision is to divorce her?” The judge asked.

“Yes your honour” Edmond answered.

“Agatha, you have heard what your husband has said, is there anything you can say?”

With tears in her eyes, Agatha went on explaining her side of the story.

“Your honour, I can not deny all these allegations over me. It’s true that I cheated on him but I did not mean to. I really love Edmond with all I have. This was the mistake I made. I did that thinking I could help make our problems lessen. I really love my husband. I can really be grateful if you help me beg him to take me back” she pleaded after which she cleaned the tears with her chitenge material.

There was silence in the court as she narrated. It became evident to all people there that Agatha made a mistake which she was regretting. The majority of people there wished Edmond could reverse his decision and take back his wife.

“Edmond, from my observation, I have seen that your wife is really remorseful and she would never repeat this. Am sure from now on she will be the perfect wife for than before if you take her back in. She has apologised. Why not give her a second chance?” Asked the judge.

“Thank your honour, for your sake I will forgive her but I can not take her in to my life again” he said.

“I can see that you love her but emotions are so tense in you. Hatred is written all over you. I have presided over cases like these and it usually happens that husbands go back to their wives when the hatred ends in them. And Some men have been unfortunate finding the wives had moved on already leaving them with a life of regret. Anyway, since you want the divorce, I will grant it to you. Your divorce has been granted.” Said the judge.

“Thank you your honour”

“But you have forgotten one thing, this man who slept with your wife, what have you done about him? Anyway, away from that, the money you were charged for marriage has to be returned to your family soonest. The woman’s family has to pay back the money very soon to finalise the divorce as per tradition. It has to be paid back in full. By the way how much were you charged?” Asked the judge.

“K23,000”

Upon hearing that the money charged was supposed to be returned in full, uncle Malema who was the one charging that exorbitant amount couldn’t believe his ears. He remembered that he had no such amount and there was no where he could get it from as he enjoyed the whole money alone without sharing with family members. Where he sat on the bench in court, he fell down as the emotions in him were too much
