Little Lucy - S01 E30

Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 30

” Your mom’s getting married, eh?” Vee was staring at the invitation card with a slight smile on her face. ” How interesting. It’s funny how everyone’s getting engaged these days.”

I was putting away my provisions in the cupboard when I turned to her. ” Yeah, it’s funny enough for my mom to rule me out until now.”

Vee eyed me. ” Your mom was here with me a couple of hours before you came. She mentioned something about you being mad at her for getting engaged. Lucy, shouldn’t you be happy? It’s tough being without a father figure, you know.”

” I’m used to it, MÔM,” I replied her, settling on the floor before her. ” I’m just not comfortable having a total stranger as a father. I have my fears, MÔM. You wouldn’t understand.”

Vee shrugged. ” All the same, you can’t deny the fact the wedding’s still going to hold. You’ve got to accept your mother’s decision. She’s doing all these for you.”

I rolled my eyes. ” Gee, thanks a lot MÔM but I never asked her to. I’m happy just the way we are.”

” She invited me,” Vee waved the card in the air. ” You’ll be seeing more of me during the holidays, little Lucy.”

I looked around the room, searching for a likely stuff to change the subject. Then my eyes landed on the paintings on the wall.

There was the painting of two school girls on the wall I’ve seen before. There was also a painting of a horse, a sunset, a big tree, some flowers, and more flowers.

Then there were the names on the wall.

The names on the wall attracted me the first day I stepped foot in Vee’s Lodge. I hadn’t paid those names much attention until now.

They were more like nicknames though, painted beautifully but their style was different from Vee’s paintings.

These must’ve been painted by her wards.

Colette

Caro

Queen Bee

Dandelions

Scarlett

Kelly

Teddy bear

Seven names. All girls. I became interested in these names. I wondered who they were.

Collette’s name was at the top. Ofcourse I know who Collette was but the rest of the girls were void to me. I had no idea who they were.

” You don’t mind explaining who those girls on the wall are? I only know Collette but the others are—”

” Those are my wards,” Vee explained, staring at each names on the wall. ” Well, actually they’re my favorite girls.”

Favorite wards eh? The way she said it hinted at a favoritism that sounds deeper than the actual sense of what she was talking about.

” Colette, Caro, Queen Bee, Dandelions, Scarlett, Kelly and Teddy bear,” Vee said, pointing at each names on the wall. ” They all had history in QA. Right when I became a teacher, I trained these girls to become highly intelligent students. These seven girls all held student council president positions. Teddy bear is a nickname I gave to her anyway, she was my first ward and the very person to begin the chain of student president council amongst my wards. After her graduation, the chain continued. Everyone’s eyes were thrown on my wards and since I had beautiful intelligent girls, it wasn’t Soo hard getting them elected as president or vice president.”

I was wowed. So this was what it meant to be Vee’s ward. You eventually get the opportunity to become student council president without any stress.

I wanted to be like Collette. From what Vee was saying, I’d bet Collette is the last of her ward to own the council president. I wondered if the chain would continue.

And if it does, I’d loved to become the next student council president.

” Lucy,” Vee brought me back to earth. ” I’ve noticed this unusual closeness between Collette and you for some time now. It makes it seemed as if you two have something going on behind my back.”

” Behind your back?” I laughed uneasily. ” There’s nothing going on between Collette and I. She’s tutoring me, remember?”

Vee smiled. ” Efua told me you two have been kissing. What do you have to say coolval stories about that?”

My mind went numb. Kissing?! That black witch. She’s at it again, spilling out information to Vee.

” We don’t…” I stuttered. ” I–I…. Collette and I never…that’s a lie. I’d never kiss a girl.”

Vee stood up, wandering over to the door. She closed it and returned back into the room. ” Tell me the truth, Lucy. Do you love Collette?”

That was an unexpected question. It caught me off guard. I was Soo shocked I remained silent.

Vee curved her red lips into a meaningless smile. ” So it’s true what I’ve been hearing. You two really are going out.”

Again, silence.

” Well it’s not surprising,” Vee said sitting down infront of me. ” Having heard what transpired between Adaobi and Collette it’s quite obvious you two had something going on.”

” Like I said,” I repeated. ” We’re just roommates.”

” Does your mother know that you kiss your roommate?” Vee asked all of a sudden.

I couldn’t look at her. “MÔM, this conversation is really getting one sided. What does this have to do with my mother?”

Vee folded her legs under her as she regarded me closely. ” A lot, Lucy, a lot. She is your mother after all and it’s my duty to let her in on everything you do in school. I just wondered how she’d react when she learnt you’ve been kissing your roommate.”

I felt goose pimples spread over my skin when she said this. I shot her a look. ” Don’t tell me you told her….”

Vee shooked her head. ” I was going to but then again, I decided to let it lie low for the time being.”

” Time being? I don’t understand.”

” Lucy,” Vee began. ” When did you get your first kiss?”

This was another question that threw me off guard. ” Why do you want to know?”

” Because if you do not tell me the truth I’m going to place a call across to your mother this instant and tell her what’s going on.”

I immediately saw I was busted. This was a jam. ” But—”

Vee interrupted me again. ” No buts, Lucy. I want my answers and no lies attached to it. I’m really good at identifying liars so don’t even think of lying to me. Now tell me, how did you get your first kiss?”

I wanted to say something but the words wouldn’t come out.

” Collette right?” Vee asked.

I didn’t know when I nodded.

Vee sighed. ” And I guess that pretty much led to the misunderstanding between you and Efua as well as Adaobi, isn’t that right?”

I couldn’t meet her eyes. I nodded again.

Vee shrugged. ” I was expecting this to happen anyway considering how naive you are about the school you’re in. Collette stole your first kiss and now you can’t help falling in love with her, isn’t that right?”

That was the truth but I was too ashamed to admit it before this woman who was possiblity Collette’s lover.

Vee drew closer to me and leaned forward to my face. I looked up to meet her staring at me closely.

Her right hand held my chin and held it up for me to meet her eyes.

I swallowed when I saw those eyes running down my nose to my lips and back to my eyes again.

” Two girls kissing and having an intimate relationship,” Vee’s thumb brushed against my lips. ” Do you have any idea what that means?”

Silence.

Outside the window, a soft wind blew against the curtains into the room.

Vee’s face got closer and closer towards mine as her lips moved in a low seductive flow. ” Once you two graduate and become free again and are surrounded by boys again, all the guys out there will be chasing after skirts immediately.”

I was losing my breath as her face got closer but her words were having an effect on me.

” Lucy,” Vee whispered. ” Collette doesn’t love you.”

My eyes grew when she said that.

” No girl would ever chose a v@gina over a p£nis, Lucy. I’ve seen a lot of girl and girl relationships and they don’t always end well. After graduation, life begins for Collette. She’s going to find someone special, someone better than you, someone she’d love forever and that person is going to be a boy not some little girl in an all girl’s school.”

My eyes were shaking with emotions. Why is my heart breaking into bits over Vee’s words?

” That’s why I don’t want her to leave,” Vee’s lips were nearly brushing against mine. ” She’s bounded to me until graduation. It hurts to see someone you love fall in love with another but that’s the sad truth you and I have to face, Lucy. Your place is here with me… Collette’s with another man!”

I gasped when she said that.

My body went hot then cold. Why does it hurt Soo deeply?

Vee’s lips lightly brushed my lips than she drew away from me and stood to her full height, leaving me breathless.

Her eyes were dark and hard. ” Listen, let me give you some advice. Start focusing on why you’re here in the first place and leave love out of the equation. Collette doesn’t belong to any of us. She belongs to someone else. Keep that in mind.”

And with that, she left me for her bedroom.

I remained where I was on the floor, my head bent, my teeth clenched against each other.

Those words hurt deeply. For the first time I felt that.

Collette rolled restlessly on her bed feeling uncomfortable. Laying down her novel, she gazed at the ceiling, her mind lost in thoughts. For over pretty one hour, she had kept herself inside the room, waiting for Lucy’s arrival.

” I told her to be back as soon as possible,” she thought sitting up. ” What’s taking her Soo long?”

Right now she became dangerously occupied within by a sudden acute feeling of danger. Her mind was not at rest as she decided Lucy was in trouble.

” Why I’m I having these crazy bad vibes?” She spoke quietly and stood up, heading over to the window. She drew back the curtains a little and searched for any sign of her roommate.

Still, she couldn’t see a sign of her anywhere.

Maybe MÔM alone with her. Then it dawned on her right there how much Lucy had meant for her. She remembered those big pretty eyes, her silly ways and her wonderful but naive characteristics.

She also remembered Lucy’s virginity.

” Why?” She clenched her fists on the curtains. ” Why I’m I having these crazy bad vibes?”

She instantly remembered how she lost her virginity to Vee and she gasped as realization hit her.

” NO! She wouldn’t dare take Lucy!”

Tearing away from the curtains, Collette rushed to the wardrobe to put on her uniform. She was going to look for Lucy. She can’t bear to imagine Vee taking advantage of her.

But just as she was about making for the door, it swung opened on its own to reveal Lucy.

Lucy met her eyes and Collette was shocked to see how hardened her eyes had suddenly become.

” I was nearly thinking you wouldn’t come,” Collette said, her voice trying to sound calm and unhurried. ” What happened at MÔM’s? It’s been over an hour.”

Lucy stared at her without saying a word then she glanced at the floor, brushing past her into the room.

Collette turned around, her eyebrows raised.

Lucy walked over to the bed, drew out her books and headed back towards the door.

” Where are you going?”

No answer. She brushed past her into the hallway towards the elevator where she was shot down to the first floor.

For a long while, Collette stared at a particular direction and her hands balled into fists.
