THE TRAGEDY…..

When I regained consciousness, my Beauty Queen, pastor’s wife and my pastor were there trying to revive me. I saw a doctor also.

“Darling, what happened? You scared the hell out of me?” Esther said.

I was just smiling. Within me, I was praising God for this great favor He has brought my way.

I signed the documents, went to inspect the car. Thank God I learnt how to drive after my NYSC, so, I drove the car with my beautiful Queen by my side as well as my pastor. We went to inspect the house also.

“Chai…..Chai….. Chineke! [God]….” I exclaimed as I observed the environment, the beautiful garden and parking space.

We went inside the house. I opened my mouth with surprise.

A well furnished and equipped house. Everything I saw pleased me.

We prayed and dedicated the house.

I was short of words. I almost knelt down to thank Esther. If she had allowed me to roll on the floor, I would have done it.

After all that, we went home.

Sister Faithfulness’ and Brother James’ wedding was a success. We were there and assisted them in every way possible. I was greatly impressed at the decorum, spirituality and maturity of the couple. Their wedding dress, appearance and organisation was void of any form of Worldliness and carnality.

I overheard Esther saying her own wedding would not be different from that. She even told me that she wanted a simple and decent wedding where we will not have to spend much.

What can I say? I can’t disagree. I agreed.

We had just a month left to our wedding. We had thoroughly discussed, prayed, with fastings most of the time, held vigils on phone most of the night, planned with family and friends and also made all necessary arrangements for the traditional as well as the church wedding.

I was at my place of work beaming with smile and great joy. Oh the joy that filled my heart! Even my students and fellow teachers were teasing me. I have invited all of them for the wedding and they were all ready to be there.

I did my normal roll call that morning and discovered Emily was not in school.

“Ah….. Why? What has happened to her?” I asked myself.

After the roll call, I went to the staff room and was told my phone had been ringing and disturbing the whole place.

I picked the phone and saw 20 missed calls. They from my mum, Esther’s mum and Grace, my sister.

I called back, but the numbers were busy. I tried again, no way. At third time, my mum picked the call.

“Hello, mummy. How are you? I’m sorry, I missed your calls….” I said

“David, tragedy….” She said with a crying voice.

“Mummy, what…what happened?” I said.

“You have to come to the hospital right now” she said.

“Ah….. hospital….for what?” I said. This time, my colleague, Mr. Timothy was standing by me.

“Esther…..” She said

“What happened…..what happened to her” I said hastily.

“Please, calm down…. just calm….” She wanted to continue, but I yelled at her.

“Mummy, stop telling me to calm down. What happened to Esther?” I shouted. Timothy was trying to calm me down.

“She’s in a coma right now in the hospital, but David, please, calm down….David…. David….” She was calling me.

I couldn’t bear the news, I fainted.

I was brought back to consciousness by my fellow teachers.

I rose up, quickly took permission from my principal and dashed out to the hospital. Mr. Timothy followed me.

When I got to the hospital, I met my mum, Emily, Grace and Esther’s mum crying.

“Mummy, where’s she?” I asked

The doctor came out of the ward.

“Doctor, where’s she?” I asked as I grabbed his white lab coat.

“Young man, please, you will have to calm down. She’s in a coma now and we are doing our best to save her life” he said and left us.

I went back to meet my mum.

“Mummy, please, tell me, what happened?” I asked.

Esther’s mum spoke out with tears.

“It was last night. We were at home when some bandits came into the compound. They broke into the house , demanded for money, which we gave them.” She said and gave a loud cry.

“So, what did they do next?” I asked as I wanted to hear the whole story.

“After they collected the money, one of them…..” She paused and cried.

“Esther was raped!” She said.

I fainted…….
