Read Story: SEASON 2 EPISODE 6

When she lost the connection to Cherish, Susan almost ran out of the house half-dressed except for Michal who stopped her at the door.“Could you at least put on a bra?” he asked, gesturing at her chest as he pulled on a white shirt quickly.

His tone distracted her from her panic over the abruptly ended phone call with her daughter and Susan frowned at him, hoping he had not started developing a proprietary attitude towards her just because of their love-making the night before. She had had enough of being policed and criticized by her ex-husband and had sworn not to let anyone ride over her again.

She opened her mouth to retort and then reconsidered. She glanced down at her chest and saw that the nubs of her breastswere indeed jutting visibly through the large cotton t-shirt she had on, so she merely grunted and ran into the bedroom to pull on a bra and a thicker t-shirt over the pair of shorts she had on.In Michael’s Honda, they hardly spoke. Lulled by the comforting purr of the vehicle’s engine, Susan had let her thoughts return to Cherish; she wondered what had made the phone call end that way. Had her husband returned at that moment and found the girl making the phone call? Or was it something worse? Had someone else who would not be as gentle as her ex-husband found Cherish under the dining table? Other than the woman Cherish had called Aunty Grace, she had no idea who else lived in the house and she muttered prayers, hoping her daughter was safe and had come to no harm.

If anything has happened to my baby, I swear I’ll kill Asuquo, she thought fiercely.Beside her, Michael concentrated on the road before him, driving quickly but carefully. The address Cherish had given her mother was in the popular Shelter Afrique Estate, not too far away from the main part of Uyo town. The mid-morning traffic was brisk but not choked and he didn’t expect to meet any major hang-ups on the roads. If he drove quickly and smartly enough, they would reach the place in about twenty to thirty minutes. He half-hoped they would get there before the police. He wanted to get an opportunity to square up against Asuquo one on one for abducting Cherish and making Susan cry. His fists clenched around the steering wheel in anticipation. Beneath Asuquo’s brash attitude, Michael knew he was just a bully who only felt powerful when he had women under his thumb. He could not wait to show Susan’sex-husband what it meant to pick on someone his own size.

It would not be pretty. Outside the fence of Mrs Grace Udeme Okon’s home, her security guard lounged in a plastic chair, unaware of all the drama and action headed in his direction. He lazily pried pieces of meat from between the crevices of his teeth, daydreaming about the backside of his madam’s maid and watching people walk by. When the young lady had brought him his breakfast, he had attempted to smack her on the bottom but received an earful ofindignant shrieks. He grinned to himself; itwas only a matter of time; he had not yet met a maid he could not conquer.

He was roused from his lustful thoughts as he recognized a figure running towardsthe house. He sat up and shaded his eyes from the hot sun with a hand. His vision shimmered with the heat coming off the sidewalks, but he could swear that was hismadam’s guest, Mr Udodiong, running in the distance. He frowned as he remembered the man’s jeep was parked in the compound; why had he not just driven to wherever he wanted to go? It was ridiculous to be running under a sun as hot as the one thathad been beating down on their part of theworld since dawn. He shook his head as he saw the man stop a few times to catch his breath.“Ah! Why big man go dey run like this for broad daylight?” the guard muttered to himself. Before the sentence trailed off, hiseyes widened as he saw the man suddenlyclutch at his chest. The running man’s legs tangled and he tumbled to the sandy sidewalk with a thump the guard imaginedhe could feel in his bones.

The guard jumped to his feet in alarm, quickly running towards the fallen man as other people stopped to gather and stare. What had happened?Just as the security man was about to reach the man lying on the ground, two police vehicles screeched to a halt beside the crowd that had quickly gathered. The guard slowed his steps, andmost of the people in the crowd backed away as the policemen swarmed around the unconscious man. When the security man saw someone reluctantly point towards his madam’s house at a policeman’s query, he quickly retraced his footsteps, sweat pouring down his face as he tried to walk fast without running and drawing attention to himself. He had to warn his madam. The police were coming to the house.
