Asuquo muttered in irritation as he walkedalong the sidewalk, wincing as the morning sun burned down on his bare, balding head. The morning was unseasonably warm and he had ventured out of Grace’s house reluctantly. But the day before he had promised to buy Cherish some ice-cream and the little girl had reminded him of that immediately she woke up from sleep.

He had never been able to refuse his baby anything.

Grace had directed him to a supermarket that sold assorted items close to her house and he had set off, determined to get ice-cream for his daughter. Just a littledistance away from the house, he began to regret his decision. He had chosen not to drive because he knew the police were on the look-out for his jeep, and Grace hadsent her own car out for some servicing, but as the scorching morning sun flailed at him, he wished he had damned the consequences and driven the jeep anyway. Soft, indulgent living over the years had made him put on a little weight and his heart was hammering at the unusual exercise. But he trudged on, determined to satisfy the little girl. It was also a bribe of some sort, to stop Cherish from asking to speak with her mother.

Also, he suspected his daughter had seen him kissing their hostess when she was preparing dinner the evening before. He had turned to see her standing at the kitchen door, a traumatized look on her little face.Ice cream solves everything, he thought grimly as he palmed the sweat off his forehead. Even he did not wish to dwell on the thought of kissing Grace, and he was definitely unhappy to inflict the sight of that unfortunate necessity on his daughter. He hoped that once she was finished with shoving spoonfuls of sweet strawberry ice-cream down her throat, she would forget what she had seen.“There’s only vanilla ice-cream, sir.” the salesgirl behind the supermarket counter drawled between smacking chewing gum loudly, after a long look at the contents of the freezer beside her.Asuquo cursed beneath his breath. Cherish detested vanilla flavoured ice-cream. “What? How can such a huge store have just one flavour of ice-cream?” he asked, throwing his hands up in disappointment.

The salesgirl chewed noisily for a moment, then blew a big bubble, letting the gum snap back against her bright red lipstick. “Recession.” She said lazily.Asuquo pushed down the urge to smack the chewing gum out of her loudly chewing mouth and stepped outside, muttering angrily. Grace had told him there was a second supermarket just outside the gates of the estate, but it was along trek under the merciless sun that he would rather avoid. But if he retuned empty-handed to the house, Cherish would be upset. He sighed, deciding to call her and ask if she wouldn’t mind some vanilla ice-creamif they whipped some Bournvita into it. The suggestion had worked before. It took him a moment to realize his phone was not in his pocket. At first he felt exasperated at the thought that he had forgotten it when he left the house. Then he remembered that he had left it on the dining table, next to his daughter. She could get the bright idea to call her mother, whose number she had memorized. That would not be a good thing.

Ignoring the hot sun, he began to run backto the house. As he ran, he palmed away the sweat from his forehead, muttering over and over to himself. That would not be good at all. “They’re still in Uyo!” Susan said joyful tears running down her face after Cherish carefully recited the address she had memorized. Michael heaved a sigh of relief. He had been half afraid that Asuquohad been hiding in one of the remote local government areas of Akwa-Ibom state.

Susan had resumed her conversation with her daughter. Michael hunkered closer to where they both sat near the phone, which Susan had set on speaker mode.“Okay, baby, you did very well to memorize that address. Are you alone? Who else is in the house?”“Just me and Aunty Grace, I think.” Cherish replied. “Oh, and her housemaid. Daddy went out to buy me ice-cream.”Susan and Michael shared a glance, and Michael moved away, typing on his own phone.“Okay. Uncle Michael is sending the address to the police now to get you, in case they reach where you are first. But we are also coming to you right now…”“The police are coming?” Cherish soundedconfused. “Did someone do something wrong? Aunty Grace has been nice to me…”There was the sound of a scuffle and Susan’s heart almost stopped. She could hear Cherish struggling for the phone withsomeone.“Give it to me!”Michael hurried over as Susan grabbed the phone and pressed it to her ear again. “Cherish? Baby, what’s going on?”With a loud scratchy squeal, the call ended.

Susan stared at the phone in horror. What had happened to her daughter?
