Mrs Jagun:” Did I hear you right?”


Eunice:” in case you didn’t, I said you are stupid” Eunice said again.


Principal:” please Miss, calm down. We can sort this out gently.” The principal said.


Eunice:” I should calm down? You asked my brother to wash the school toilet and you ask me to calm down. That shows you Dont even care about his well being.”


Principal:” We won’t have asked him to if he didn’t do anything.”


Eunice:” isn’t the suspension okay? ”


Principal:” we are sorry miss, we would call off the punishment but…”


Mrs Jagun:” Sir, why are you apologizing, he be..”


Eunice:” Please ma, just keep shut” Eunice told her again.

Principal:” Mrs Jagun its okay, please miss, we are deeply sorry, we would call off the punishment. ”

Eunice:” You better do.” She said and vacated the office immediately, I stood there for some seconds thinking of what to do.


Me:” Good morning ma, Good morning sir” I greeted them smiling as I adjusted my glasses. They didn’t reply rather they both eyed me and I simply went out.


Eunice:” Mumu, if you like let them ask you to wash their toilet again and you should also agree.


Me:” Am not a Mumu” I replied her as she made to leave. She turned back and eyed me before turning to leave again.


Joy:” Sister Eunice” she called out, she was just coming to school and was surprise to see Eunice standing by the gate with me.


Eunice:” Joy, how are you?” Eunice asked trying hard to smile.

Joy:” Am fine sis, what brought you to our school today?” She asked.


Eunice:”I came to confront those foolish people on why Gabriel should be asked to wash the toilet. And am also angry with you, you know about it and you couldn’t tell me.” She said


Joy:”Sister am sorry, it skipped my mind.” Joy said as she placed her two hands together, a sign of apology.


Eunice:”OK , its alright. You guys should go to your class now” she said to us as she walked out of the gate.


Joy:”Gabi, good morning” she talked to me for the first time.

Me:”Is it now you are seeing me?”


Joy:”See, Dont start with your problem o, I Dont even know why I greeted you” she said in a playful manner as she swayed her waist away. ” its gonna be a long day” I thought to myself before also walking to my class. Akpan was the only person in class excluding joy.


Me:” Akpan how far now?” I greeted him as we shook hands in guys way.


Akpan:” Gabi my guy”


Me:” That’s me”


Akpan:” the only guy with unfitting glasses” he said again.


Me:” Just say you want to abuse me this morning” I told him while he smiled.


Akpan:” Have you filled the form?”


Me:” Yes it is in my bag, my mum filled it for me.”

Akpan:” Did you see where they ask if you have any physical disabilities?”


Me:” yes.”


Akpan:” what did you fill there?”


Me:” No of course.”


Akpan:” What about your eye problem?” He asked again while I frowned


Me:” I can see you woke up from the wrong side of your bed today.” I said as I made to go away.


Akpan:” Expecting you in training today, I heard you can top strike, Charles now has a substitute. Oh sorry, I Dont even know if you can play” he said laughing while I hissed and walked away.


===> The day was a boring one, I knew it would be a boring one, Tuesdays are always boring. The only time it became interesting was during the break period, today I didn’t have to wash the school toilet so I headed to the canteen with Joy. As usual I bought snacks and she made to order for oranges.



Me:”Why Dont you just buy something else today?” I asked her as we stood in front of the woman selling fruits.


Joy:”Why Dont you also buy something else?” She asked me back .


Me:”OK lets do it this way, you will take my snacks and I will take your oranges” I suggested. She looked at me for a while before finally nodding her head.


Joy:”Give me 100 naira orange ma” she told the fruit seller while the woman obeyed as she packed five oranges and put them in a black nylon, she also added one extra for joy.


Joy:”Have it” she said passing the nylon to me while I also gave her mine and then we went to look for a free table, luckily for us, there was one.

Joy:”So any gist ?”


Me:”No” I replied her sharply as I s----d the first orange.

Joy:”The orange isn’t running away, take it easy”

Me:”Please just mind your own business” I said without looking up to her.

Joy:” And if I Dont?”

Me:”Why do you Just like making troubles?”


Joy:” I only trouble those I like”


Me:”That reminds me Joy, What made you come seat with me on that first day of school when miss Linda needed someone to be my sit mate?” I asked her while she looked up from her snacks, I had always wanted to ask her that but it had always skipped my mind.


Me:”So you just liked me at first sight?” I asked again while she laughed.


Joy:” what do you see yourself as?” She asked smiling.


Joy:”I only came that day so as to save the class from Miss Linda cane” she said.


Me:”I know you will use that as an excuse” I said again.


Joy:” it isn’t an excuse dear, its the truth. It was after I sat with you that I realized that you are somehow cool to be with”


Me:” So am cool ”


Joy:” Not now, I meant the first day I meant you” she countered while I adjusted my glasses in disappointment.


Me:” And then you fell for me?”


Joy:” No you fell for me”


Me:” OK let’s forget about that, but I know you fell for me”


Joy:” No, I remember you first asked me if I had a boyfriend, so you fell first for me.”


Me:” Its okay, we Dont know if this canteen is embedded with audio recorders o, so let forget it. But you fell for me final” I said as I s----d my last orange hoping she won’t talk again.


Joy:” Gabriel guess what”


Me:” what?”


Joy:” You fell for me” she said smiling while I adjusted my glasses again, it was then I believed my father’s favourite word ” you can’t win a lady in an argument ” .


Me:” OK, I agree, let’s forget it, the dog once said that if I fall for you and you fall for me, its a play.” I told her in order to end the topic.


Joy:” Gabriel does dog talk?” She asked while I simply stood up and made to go out of the canteen.


Joy:” You forgot to hold my hands” she said as I made to go, I turned back and dragged her along.


Joy:” But seriously, I never knew Dog could talk” she said again but I didn’t answer her, who asked me to talk with proverbs in the first place?.

===> The long awaited closing bell finally came, yes I had been expecting it because of the after school training, as a matter of fact, it was the only thing I thought about today. I waited for Joy to pack her books into her bag so I could wave her good bye. It took her about 10 minutes to do that.


Me:”You always waste time in everything” I told her as she backed her bag.


Joy:”Slow and steady wins the race.” She replied.

Me:”OK just wanted to wish you goodbye, am going to the field” I told her as I turned to go but she drew my hands back and to my surprise, she hugged me.


Joy:”They aren’t with video recorders ” she whispered into my ears as she hugged me, I turned to look around, it was only Charles and Akpan that were In the class, Charles was staring stupidly at us while Akpan was smiling.


Me:”You can’t tell” I replied her in my confuse state as she broke the hug.


Joy:”OK goodbye” she told me as she made to go.

Me: “Bye dear” I replied waving my hands while she finally left.

Akpan:” Did you just hug her?” Akpan asked as he popped up behind me after Joy had left.


Me:”Shhhhhhhh, you can’t tell who is with an audio recorder.” I whispered to his ears as i turned to charles who was now cleaning his fore head with a white handkerchief while he nodded and covered his mouth.


Akpan:”Yes we can’t tell” he replied still nodding as we both walked to the school field, with our hands across our shoulders.
