We all had this primary school classmates that we all crushed on. I mean it happens to everyone. We would write letters that we would never send, rehearse conversations that we never made and bought gifts we never gave. So the most bold of us would start up a propaganda to make the class pair them up automatically. One would start hearing things like, I will marry this girl and stuffs like that, and when the boys in the class hears something like that, they will now start calling the boy the girls name and the girl the guys name. Shy guys like me will pray to be placed in the same seat with our crush or for our teachers to tease us with them.In my primary 6 class, there was this girl everybody liked. Her name was Angela.


I will have to say she was beautiful because back then, i think i was too small to know much about the qualities of a girl. She was dark i can remember and intelligent too . Like i said, i was too young to know if she was figure 8 or whatever, my young mind couldn’t even begin to think of such things. You see, unlike children of these days, I wasn’t corrupted early.

As luck would have it, she was made the senior prefect of the school and i the deputy. So it was S.P and D.S.P. But my classmates would call me DI S. P. Di in Igbo meant husband. I loved the name more than my post. We finished our primary school and i left without being able to tell her how i felt.


I started my Js1 in a boarding school for boys.


My first week at school was a new experience.

We had female teachers but after spending a week inside the school compound and i saw a girl. It was like i saw an Angel. And the girl wasn’t even that fine.

During my first xmas break in my js1, I decided i was going to pay my crush a surprise visit.

My mom had sent me to the market. I decided i was going to use that opportunity to go and see Angela in their house. I brought chidozie my friend with me.

We went to the market, i decided to buy things i was going to give to Angela or maybe eat with her. I bought 2 lucozade boosts, 2 moi moi, 3 sachets of pure water and 2 nasco banana biscuit, i decided the extra one sachet of pure water was for Chidozie to drink while me and Angela feasted on the rest. I packed them into one nylon and we left for a primary school friends house. His name was Emeka. We all had been very close during our primary school days. We intended asking him for directions to Angela’s house.


We got to Emeka’s house, exchanged pleasantries. After which he pointed out Angela’s house to us.


We got there. I don’t know who was the most naive between me and chidozie. After about 10 minutes of walking the length and breath of their fence, we decided to go inside. We tiptoed inside and knocked. We heard shuffling of feet inside the house. Chidozie was already at the gate waiting to bolt at any false alarm.

“Yes, i’m coming ” we heard a female voice say from inside.

The voice sounded like a someone that had water in her mouth.


The door opened and Angela stood before us.


Looking at her hands, i noticed garri scales on them. She looked shocked on seeing us.

” Ermm, Angela” i called her and looked back at Chidozie for support only to meet the gate empty..

“Neche” she called back. For 30 seconds we stared without uttering any word.


Then i broke the ice
“Do you know Emeka’s house? ..”………


I shaa ended up eating the things i bought with Chidozie.

“Mehn this is good. Guy when are we going to her house again” Emeka asked as we chewed the last piece of the biscuit inside a nearby bush. I hissed at him, got up and wiped the dirt from my jeans and continued on my way home.
