Must Read: Selfless Desires - Season 1 - Episode 9

Awesome stood up and stared at bewilderment at the pile of thrash in front of him. Since there wasn’t much to do, he decided to clean up the unorganised room. The room had served his dad as a home for keeping unused and used files of his workers.
‘Do you need a hand with that?’ Tolu asked.
‘Not exactly, just that this room needs a great deal of cleaning’
‘I can help’ Tolu offered.
‘Alright, then!’

They arranged the whole files, by sorting out those who died in office and those who were sacked, those who resigned and that.

They were almost rounding up when Awesome saw something that caught his interest. He picked and dusted the file to be sure.
‘Ebere Williams?’ He said loudly.
‘What’s that?’ Tolu asked.

She took the file from her brother and glanced through it. She opened her mouth in horror.

Tolu saw tears pricking at the end of her brother’s eye, He was just trying to brave it and failed. It was annoying that the inhumane behaviour melted to the man in question was from her family. What heightened the unutterable sadness was that the man in question happened to be Ama’s father!

Awesome sniffed loudly, he had to see Ama soon, now he had two things to explain to her. His only prayer was for Ama to take the news gracefully,that sounded selfish to him!

‘I’ve missed you!’ Uju said to her sister, who stared at her strangely.
She moved to her and hugged her tightly. She had really missed her.

The smell of her skin. Her exotic fragrance.

With a fast shiver, and a shake of her head for being so quiet, she fluttered her dark eye lashes for a second and then broke the silence.
‘You’re welcome, and I’m sorry, I caused all these’ Ama said.
‘Ama, have a sit’ Uju offered and she opened the door wider, making way for her sister.
‘You know, I shouldn’t have said those horrible things to you, I owe you an apology’ Ama apologise while sitting up on the couch.
‘It’s okay, I’m back, and I don’t want you to dwell on it, it’s in the past now, and I’ve learnt my lessons’ Uju said truthfully.
‘I love the boring you, I mean you’re amazing, the way you are, why would you wanna be someone else, when the person you are already is impressive,I never meant to cause you all the troubles you went through, maybe it’s a phrase for you to pass, but I’m sorry for everything, you obviously shouldn’t let yourself to be easily pushed to the wall’
Uju sniffed loudly.
‘You are my idol, you know that, right?’ Uju said more of a fact than question.
‘And you’re my little cute sister’ Ama replied and sat back, relaxed in her chair, and nodded slowly. ‘So, you’re gonna tell me everything that happened!’
‘Right now?’ Uju asked puzzled
‘Yup! Time waits for no one’
‘Alright!’

Uju narrated everything to her sister, excluding no details,she told her how she woke up in Bimbo’s room, and Bimbo persuading her to be her partner. She left nothing unsaid.
‘So, how did you get out?’
‘One of the guard, obviously have a heart of gold, he asked me to meet him at the gate by nine pm, actually, it was scary at first, you know, Bimbo never let me out of sight, but I pretended to be ill, I faked a vomit, and she hates dirt more than anything, I ran to this heaven-sent guard, it was easy for me, you know, I don’t have any luggage, I wore her dresses most of the time, so he guarded me out, safely’ Uju narrated.
‘I’m glad, you came out hale and hearty, with your body part intact’ Ama said jokingly
‘It’s not fun, you know’ Uju said with a smile ‘that reminds me, where have you been?’
‘I went to the village to see mama, and you won’t believe what I……

Ama’s phone beeped, she casually flipped it open, her mind filled with possibilities.
‘Hello? Awesome’ She said.
‘You’re home, right?’
Ama could felt the uncertainty and regret in his voice.
‘Yes, I’m home, what is it?’
‘I’m coming right away, it’s urgent!’
‘I will be waiting, and Uju is home now, I forgot to tell you’
‘Oh great! Expect me in some minutes’ He said and hanged up.
‘Awesome, right?’
‘Yes!’ Ama said sharply.

They chatted for some minutes, Ama made it a point to fill her now-found sister in on the latest happenings with her. She told Uju about Diri and Afam, She was rewarded with hugs and pecks.
‘Come in, please’ Ama said to Awesome.

He stared at her for some moment and he wondered what she would say if she knew the truth?

Would she still be inviting him in and smiling at him?

Could it be another trick up fate’s sleeves?

He had never walked away from a challenge in his life, but if he had the opportunity, he would love to walk away.

It was overwhelming. Ama’s mood’s swings had no type. He knew perfectly.

Suddenly aware that Ama’ was still expecting some kind of answer and movement from him.

He composed himself and consoled him that all would work out fine.
‘Thank you!’ He said.

He sauntered into the room, and saw the old picture of Ama and his dad, hanged on the wall, and that brought bitterness to him, as he flinched in fear. He had never noticed the picture, infact, he was certain it wasn’t hanged before.

What was happening? Did she knows about it?

He moved to the side of the wall, where the picture was hanged, and was deeply terrified.

There was so much love in the picture, and he had a guilty conscience instantly.
‘Is that your dad?’ He asked.
‘Yes!’ Ama replied.
‘I’ve never seen the picture here before’ He continued.
‘Well, I went home recently and I felt pity for him, and I just feel like honouring him, so what’s up?’ Ama replied.
‘I’m good, where is Uju?’
‘She went out, she should be back soon’ Ama replied.
‘I need to tell you something’ Awesome blurted out.

There was a silence and it tensed the air greatly.
‘Your dad worked in my dad’s company’ Awesome explained.

Ama stood up abruptly, and stared at him, as if he was speaking in parables. Her worst nightmare should not come to pass.

After few sideways glance at her,he focused back and shook his head pitifully.
‘So?’ Ama said.
‘He was working with them, when he had an accident’
‘Go on! He was working with them, and??’
‘He had an accident, and the managing director seized his entitlement and lied against him’
Ama forced air into her lungs as she stamped her feet on the floor angrily, a maelstrom of emotions welled up in her, and she knew she would lose control soonest. It was hard wrapping her head around the fact that all the disgraces and shame, that befell her family back then was due to the fact that he was working selflessly for their(Awesome’s) family.
‘You family ganged up and lied against him, accusing him wrongly, right’
The voice that came from her mouth sounded like that of another woman. A woman who just let opened her greatest fears and anxieties of life.
‘I was studying at the moment, my dad had stroke during that period, the managing director was the only one who wields power then’ Awesome narrated.

Ama’s silence struck a nerve on him as he was unaware of her next moves.
‘Amaka, I’m sorry, I know this is hard for you, I can’t even think straight right now, don’t go all quiet on me,give me your worst–nothing could be as bad as the guilt I felt whenever I think about it’
‘Save me, a speech filled with false emotions and love, what your family did to him was odious to say the least, oh, I see it now, is that the real reason why you gave me employment on the platter of gold when it was obviously the last thing you wanted to do,It is, isn’t it? You felt like you need to make amends for what your family had done’
She was shouting now, and she didn’t care.

Fists clenched, She strode up to him and stared into his pale and sullen face.
‘How much do you love me? Or are you just interested in Ebere Williams’s daughter?’ She threw at him.
‘That is riduculous! I was never interested in Ebere Williams’s daughter, I was interested in my best friend’ He replied truthfully.
‘Thank you for answering that honestly! I will get back to my life and I will get on…..’ She choked, her tears had blurred her vision.
‘There’s more!’ Awesome said.’Lola is back and I never mentioned that she had a baby girl for me’ He stopped.
‘Not like I care, few minute ago, I would cry my eyes out, but it’s a good reunion with you two, and thank you for being honest, but I want you to leave my house this minute, let the door hit you on your way out!’ Amaka said sternly.
‘Protesting or pleading would only angered her the more. He knew that, he was about to take a step, when Uju entered.
‘What’s going on here?’ Uju asked, but no one answered.
Awesome stormed out of her room, while Amake collapsed on the couch and let the tears flowed freely.
