The semester went pretty normal….
During the semester….

Me: What is it ma?

Mum: She could not give birth normally…. She had to go through caesarean section….

Me: Ah…. But she’s okay sha? And the baby?

Mum: Yes…she delivered the baby….

Me: But why would she go through C.S…. the doctor never mentioned C.S

Mum: At the point of labor, she opted for it…. So they didn’t bother trying the normal delivery…

Me: Can I speak to her ma?

Mum: Yes… hold on…

She went to give Shola the phone…

Shola: Helloo…

Me: Sholly!!!

Shola: What’s up?

Me: I should be asking you…. I heard about the C.S… how are you feeling now?

Shola: I’m okay…. Jide for up to 2 and a half months, not a single call…. No message…. Even you blocked me….

Me: You messed everything up…. Or we… I don’t know…. But all the same… I’m happy for your delivery…


Shola: remember, you’re the father….

Me: And you’re the mother….

Shola: So when will you be coming to Nigeria….

Me: After my exams obviously… let’s say 3 to 4 weeks

Shola: So are you seeing anybody now?

Me: um, I believe that’s a private thing…… it not your business really….

Shola: The doctor asked of you…. I told him we’re no more…. He insisted on getting your number…. Or has he called you?

Me: No he hasn’t….

Mum: She needs to rest…. Call her next time… okay… bye…

Life continued pretty normally….

We did our basic things…. And we were living as a couple already
……………
The end of the semester was approaching….

The day our exams were to begin….


Nolly: So baby, I’ll be coming to Nigeria with you this summer…. Or you sit your butt0ckz down here…

Me: That’s so much stress Nolly… Nigeria isn’t a really comfortable place for you…. It’s hardcore…

Nolly: I know, but I want to meet your family… and I want to see the country where you came from… that’s not to hard is it?

Me: Okay…. We’ll see what will happen then… but exams are here again…
One morning…


Me: hello?

D: Hey Jide…. It’s me… the doctor…

Me: Good morning sir….

D: How are you and your studies over there?

Me: I’m doing okay sir…. Thank you…

D: I want to inform you… about your baby…. The baby isn’t going to survive Jide…. There’s not a single chance.

Me: Sir, I don’t understand….

D: The baby is going to die soon….

Me: Why is that? Does Shola know about this?

D: She doesn’t. They’ve been in the hospital for over 3 weeks now…

Me: Ah… what is the cause? Is she sick or what?

D: She’s sick…. She was born sick… because her mother had almost killed her even before she was born…

Me: You mean, she tried to abort the pregnancy?

D: No…. but she ate a lot of things… smoked drank…. Things that a pregnant mother shouldn’t even engage in… well I don’t know…. I just want you to be the one to inform her of the news… thank you.

I decided not to call Shola….

After our exams, I had already agreed to Nolly’s proposal…

She had gotten her Nigerian passport, with great ease….

And because I was going with her, or she was coming with me…. The flight expenses were taken care of by her dad…

We landed in Lagos on a Friday…..

I didn’t inform my parents of anybody’s arrival…

Even at the airport….

There were various on lookers….

Nolly was that hot..

I got a cab as usual….

In no time… we were home….

As I got in… it was always going to be my sister…..

She embraced me and shook hands with Nolly….

We entered the house….


Mum: My son, welcome….

Dad: Jide… how are you?

Me: em, mummy, daddy, meet Nolly… Nolly these are my parents.

She knelt down half way… and shook hands with them…

Dad: How was your journey…. Hope it wasn’t stressful…. I learnt you’re already making money…. Even enough to buy you flight tickets….

Me: Ah… no sir…. We’ll talk about that later…

Mum: Jide, we need to talk o… now …

I left with her… leaving Nolly with my dad and sister….

Me: Yes ma…

Mum: Who’s she?

Me: She’s my girlfriend…. I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned her…

Mum: You brought girl from South Africa…. Are you that daft?

Me: Mummy it’s not like that o… I’ve met her since I got to the school….

Mum: So what about Shola? What are your plans sef?

Me: Mummy, I’ve broken up with Shola… long ago… even before I went back to school… I just didn’t want to mention it….

Mum: So she too.. didn’t want to mention it…. You children…. What about the baby….

Me: The doctor said the baby cannot survive…. And Shola caused it…. In fact… it was one of the things that led to our break up then… it’s a very long story.

Mum: Oga o… and you people just kept quiet… there are lives involved here.
I told her everything about Nolly…..

Mum: You’ve to go and see Shola tomorrow….

Me: I’ll try… but I can’t go with Nolly…

Mum: You mean, she doesn’t know you’ve a baby?


Me: How do you expect I tell her I’ve a baby…. That doesn’t even make any sense…

Mum: Jide…. And you now brought her again…. You certainly weren’t thinking….

After I was released… Nolly was still in the parlor, although my sister had packed all our luggage to my room…


Me: Baby… come with me…
We got into my room….

Knowing fully well, my parents were going to be against me sleeping in the same room with her….

Just as everything was getting heated….

My sister stormed into the room…

She came close to me to whisper…

Kemi: Jide…. Daddy said she can’t stay here with you… so she’ll stay with me…

She left the room, and I allowed things to calm down, before transferring the message to Nolly…

Me: You’ll be staying with my sister…

Nolly: Why?

Me: My parents don’t like this idea…. It’s just normal culture thing… it’s nothing… as we are yet to be married…

Nolly: So that means it’ll be me and your sister, all the night…


Me: Yes…. But we’ll be sneaking to do our thing of course….

Nolly: haha, bad boy….

The next morning, I woke up very early…. Knocked on my sister’s door…

I dragged her outside from her sleep….

Informed her about what I was going to do…. And that I needed her to keep Nolly calm… till I’m back.

I got the hospital around 8am….

After getting the description of the ward from the nurses outside….

I opened the door….

And Shola was still sleeping….

I went to see the baby….

First her complexion was chocolate skinned…..

It was obvious, if at all she lived…. She was going to grow a lot of hair….

I tried to carry her up….

There were a lot of things connected to her…. Which were of course scary for a baby….

She cried…. And her mother woke….


Shola: Jide…. It’s you…..

Me: Yes it’s me…. How are you?

Shola: hmm I’m okay…. *she started crying…..*
