Man In Black - Season 1 - Episode 41

Detective Akano looked up ahead as he was wheeled down the corridor and past the private offices of the LIPD. He was getting impatient. He longed for the days he was able to walk on his own.

“What was it you said you were taking me for again?” asked for the upteenth time.
“I’ve told you already sir, the Chief is making an announcement downstairs, on the main floor. Something about the Eel’s case,” Efe answered.
He sat bolt upright.

“Wait, are you telling me the case is still open?”

“Yes sir, I’m surprised, too. I thought the case was officially closed when the Eel. . . ” She let herself trail off. Tobi saved her the trouble.

“Shot me in my back and confined me to this wheelchair, yes I thought so myself.”
“But you don’t have to say it like that, sir!” She said, her voice hushed as if she was trying to alter a taboo he had just comitted.

“Oh God! Efe, please don’t start!”
Of course, Tobi knew just how lucky he was. That day when someone had opened fire on his car, he knew he could very well have died. Maybe he wassupposedto have died, but he had the feeling whoever that was shooting was just playing with him. It had to have been the caller at the department, the Eel. But how he had gone from the ministry all the way to Victoria Island that fast was more than Tobi could understand.

He had been shot in the back, of all places, and even then it was only one shot. And even when he was shot only once in the back, he was still lucky enough that the damage to his spinal cord wasn’t going to make him a cripple for life.

Tobi hated anyone trying to be sympathetic, to show him pity, as Efe was doing even now. Yes, the doctor said he would be confined to a wheelchair for about a year if he regularly took his medications, but six months down the line and he was not sure he could endure another six months.

So now, whenever Tobi sat in his own car or in his parlour at home, it was in a wheelchair. And he couldn’t even drive. He didn’t know how it was possible, but whatever had happened to his spine had somehow affected his hands and made it difficult to properly hold on to anything.

So it wasn’t extraordinary that he had expected the case to grow cold after the shooting incident. After all, there was almost no detective on the force with enough reputation or qualification or even skill as much as his, he thought with some smugness. Which was why he was particularly surprised at the news that the case was still open.
They reached the end of the corridor and Efe wheeled him into the elevator. As they descended, he heard a kind of clamor coming from downstairs, even through the closed doors and wondered what the Chief wanted to say about the case that was so important.
It seemed he was about to find out.
