Broken and bruised - Season 1 - Episode 78

Tobi and Jane have spent the whole day at the hospital with Ofelia and Jessica, Jane was allowed to see Mel but she was sleeping by that time so they really never spoke……it’s around six in the evening she decided to head home and this time it Tobi couldn’t drive and drop her halfway, he decides to take her up to home, they arrive at the road where he usually drops her if he comes up to her area but today he’s not stopping, he continues to drive in to her compound but Jane has to ask him to stop which he does
“What’s wrong…. aren’t you going to stop”
“No…. I have to know where my PA lives….don’t you think so”
“Yeah but you already”
“No….I only know the house and that’s it…..Jane you’re not only my PA but also a friend I care so much about” she looks aside quietly
“But it’s OK…. if you don’t want me coming in, I remember you have invited me in for a number of times, I can see it was never really from the heart” he wants to get out and open the door for her but she stops him
“It’s OK Tobi, you have been so good to me and indeed you’re my friend, why wouldn’t I want you to come in” he smiles
“Shall we”
“Sure…..” he starts the car again and continues in, even in the darkness, Tobi can still see veins popping out Jane’s upper chest

“What are you hiding from everyone Jane…. what” he wonders as he stares at her, soon they are at the compound, a small tiled compound, the house looks small from out especially if someone is looking at it from the road side, the area is sloppy and it’s a very beautiful place….what Tobi so not understanding is the fact that it’s already 7 coming to 8pm yet the house looks dark, with no light, he gets out and opens the door for Jane who comes out immediately
“I thought you said you live with your Mum” she did not reply to the question
“Are you sure you want to come in” she instead fires him a question, Tobi doesn’t know what to answer but he is curious
“Why wouldn’t I…I’m already here….it wouldn’t look good if remained outside” he sees her more tensed

“Wait for me” she says and proceeds to open the open the door, she switches on the light and before she could react, Tobi is already next to her

“Onyiru is that you” they hear a voice coming

“Is that your mum” he asks and she nods
“Are you sure you want to come in”
“I wouldn’t if I didn’t want to” she opens the door wider and the smell that meets them is so terrible and so irritating that Tobi wasn’t sure he wanted to go any further but he does anyways……they reach the living room and and she put on the light
“Thank God you’re here here my daughter, you delayed”

“It’s OK Mum…. I’m already here”
“Are you with someone”
“Yes my boss…. he should come back later…..” she turns to Tobi
“Come outside with me” Tobi follows without another word, they get out to his packed car

“I’m sorry you witnessed that….”
“That’s not the issue hers Jane…… what’s happening”
“My Mum, that’s how she has been for the last four years, it becomes worse by the years but the first two years were not like this”
“But what’s happening”
“I can’t tell, I have spent all my savings, all my salary every month gets spent on her yet they have found nothing wrong with her….. she has always been shortsighted as long as I know but four years ago, she started complaining about a waist pain, she would ignore and I thought it was nothing serious, I would buy for her painkillers and she would be OK for a while but after few months, it became so serious, I took her from one hospital to the next but they all said the same thing that she had nothing, the pain moved to her legs and finally paralysing her, she could not move on her own and that’s why you found her in that condition… she eases herself on her body and it has to wait till when I get back, I’m so sorry you saw the ugly sight”
“Don’t be ridiculous Jane… what are you saying, four years I hired you as my PA, not knowing what you were going through, you have never failed in your work, you’re so devoted and can’t believe how I admire you…. your salary is not enough to carry all this burden”

“I was working somewhere and I was always up and down missing work as I was taking mum from one hospital to the next and I got fired, I remained home for a while until when all my saving was consumed, I stared now looking for another job and I promised myself that I would not let one get in the way of the other….I wake up as early as 4am, I prepare her food, clean her up, feed her breakfast and leave her in the living room floor with her food next to her, where she can reach for it”

“And you come to work, do it wholeheartedly, always smiling…. you have never failed me even when I unknowingly kept you in the office waiting till late…for that I’m sorry” he’s getting teary
“Don’t worry Tobi, I have always left this home for work putting in mind that I might either come back Early or late….you have no idea what your appreciation gifts have done for me, non of them is in here because I have sold all of them, they are so helpful”
“I’m so sorry Jane so sorry”
“You don’t have to say that…..I’m so used to this….it’s nothing abnormal”
“Why didn’t you tell me why”
“Because it should only be my problem”
“NO NO NO…Jane, you can’t say that”
“I need to clean her up Tobi….. we shall talk, thanks for not looking down on my condition….I’m so grateful”
“Take Care please”………..

Tobi arrives home still trying to recover from what he just witnessed from Jane’s place, he packs his car and comes in to the House to find the living room empty
” Lisa….. Lisa are you there ” Lisa who has been in the kitchen comes running out
“Welcome back boss”
“How are you”

“Good….how is the baby and the Mum”
“They are doing fine….how did you know” he’s shocked
“Your Mum, she was so excited when she got back with a lot of stuffs”
“Excited??”

“Yes, excited….she’s arranging a nursery for the baby” Tobi stands with mouth wide open
“Which nursery”
“The room next to yours, she even asked me to clean your room because your Madame will soon move in” Tobi can’t believe it….he runs up to the said room and indeed, his mum is at work, the room is filled with pink stuffs, and there is already a baby crib in yet he can’t tell what time she even did all this shopping

“Mother” he calls out to him
“Son you’re back…..see I’m decorating my grandchild’s room all pink, a color for a baby girl so what do you think”
“I think it’s rather fishy, I think it’s rather strange and to top it all, I don’t know of you’re alright or actually sick mother…..this isn’t normal

” What isn’t normal son, I left that hospital saying a lot of nasty things but on my way back I started thinking, I realised my granddaughter will always be my granddaughter and I thank God I am able to see one before I die
“I need to process all of this”
“There is nothing to process, just let me do this, Lisa will take care of your room….I can even get one room for her mother and the other woman…her aunt right? so tell me, what do you think”…..
