Monster Unleashed - Season 1 - Episode 62

Hardly had I pronounced my last word when I heard a police siren outside.

“The police are here?” I thought out loud, rushing to the window and peering out.

There was a procession of police cars approaching the warehouse premises…
.
Agnes and I were seated in the waiting area of UTH, several police men pacing up and down. Amos and Alex were on my laps. I couldn’t believe they were still alive. For a second I had thought Cathy the psychopath had killed them but I was relieved when I found them in the other room of the warehouse, just regaining consciousness.
Speaking of Cathy, she had panicked upon seeing the police outside the warehouse.
Fuming, she had said, “You’re one hell of a lucky b---h, sis.”

“What do you mean?” I had asked her, my whole body sore from the ropes that had been binding me for hours.
“Because,” Cathy had said, approaching me, “I’ve grown fond of your twins and my original plan had been to kill you and take care of your babies as my own but that plan has been jeopardized by the arrival of the police.” She paused, tears running down her cheeks. “I love you, sis. And I can’t let the police get me alive so I guess this is where we part ways.”

“What do you mean?”
Catherine’s response had been her stabbing herself in the stomach.

Now here we were in the hospital waiting to know if she would make it out of the operating room alive. If she made it out alive, the police were waiting for her. I was certain she was going to spend the rest of her pathetic life in jail.

Just as I was thinking about this, a female Indian doctor approached me. Her badge read, “Dr. Dubey.”
“Are you Catherine’s sister?” she asked me in her Indian accent.
I nodded.

“To my office, please.”
I gave Alex and Amos to Agnes. “Mummy will be back shortly, okay?” I said to the twins, getting up.

They nodded in unison and I pecked their lips and followed Dr. Dubey to her office.
“Take a seat.” Dr. Dubey said when I arrived in her office. I did as told.
“I called you here,” she said, staring at me intently, “because there’s something about your sister that I need to discuss with you.”

“Tell me she’s going to make it out alive.” I said at once. I only wanted Cathy to survive so that she could pay for all the s--t she had put me through.
“Yes.” Dr. Dubey replied.
“Then why am I here?”
She sighed. “Because your sister has a mental disorder,” she curtly said, “Schizophrenia.”
Brow furrowed, I exclaimed, “Schizophrenia?”
“Yes. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that is characterized by abnormal social behavior and failure to understand what is real. Common symptoms include false beliefs, unclear or confused thinking, hearing voices that others do not hear, and the list goes on.” Dr. Dubey paused for breath. “The mainstay of treatment is Antipsychotics which are also known as neuroleptics or major tranquilizers. These medications are used to manage psychosis which include delusions, hallucinations, paranoia or disordered thoughts, mainly in Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder.” the doctor took another pause as I listened to what she was saying intently. “You see, it’s because of this mental disorder that your sister felt the urge to murder all those people. Tell me something though, would you happen to know her motive behind all those murders?”
I sighed, revelation hitting me hard. From what the doctor had said, it was clear I too was suffering from Schizophrenia because I had paranoia. It was because of this paranoia that I hated my sister so much. To me, she was an obstruction and it was because of her that I was everyone’s second best. My hatred for her wasn’t natural.
“Ma’am,” said the doctor, snapping me from my reverie. “You haven’t told me the motive behind your sister’s homicidal behaviour.”

“Revenge.” I flatly said.
“Revenge?”
“Yes, and am partly responsible for triggering it.”
“What do you mean?”
I went ahead and told the doctor everything. When I was done, she said, “from what you’ve told me, I suspect you too have the disorder.”
I sighed. “What’s the way forward?” I asked.

“The good news is that Schizophrenia can be treated. The medications I told you about earlier go hand in hand with counselling, job training, and social rehabilitation. About 0.3-0.7% of people are affected by Schizophrenia in their lifetime which makes it one of the rarest mental disorders on earth. And statics show that about 30 murders are committed yearly by people suffering from Schizophrenia.”
