Monster Unleashed - Season 1 - Episode 48

TWO DAYS LATER.

I stepped over the threshold of the church clad in a long black dress, black pumps and black chitambala. I had decided to wear these clothes because I shared a close relationship with the deceased, Justin. He was my brother in-law after all and I at least ought to respect his funeral. As if I really cared.

The church was packed with Justin’s friends, workmates, distant relatives, and so on and so forth.

Right in front of the altar was an expensive casket placed on a large table. On top of the casket was a large portrait of Justin, all smiles.
“Poor thing,” I muttered in a barely audible tone, “he was so handsome and young. He’s gone too soon.”

“Imwe sure.” said Agnes who was walking beside me, sniffing. Agnes had mourned Justin so bad it was like they had had something brewing when he was still alive. Anyway, I brushed the thought aside cause it was none of my business.

Right in front of Justin’s casket was Cynthia, powerless from all the mourning she’d done the past two days. Holding her so she couldn’t miss her step was Jason and his father.

Seeing Mr. Banda senior there and looking so heartbroken gave me a feeling of satisfaction. The man had practically started all this by simply fathering those two sons of his and I was more than happy to know I had hit two birds with one stone. Or should I say three? The birds being Cynthia, Jason and Mr. Banda senior.

“Mable, let’s go over to the front pew.” Agnes said, ushering me towards the first row of pews. We both took our seats.
Cynthia was weeping loudly, clinging to the casket like her life depended on it. “Oh Justin. My husband. My friend, my children’s father. Please tell me this is a nightmare that I’ll snap out of eventually. You know I simply can’t live without you. You are my life. Please tell me you’ll come back. Bashi Mpundu(father of twins), please tell me you’ll come back, napapata sure…”
Seated close to the casket with the urn of ashes inside, I heard Mr. Banda senior say, “Sssh my daughter. Take heart. I’ll leave no stone unturned in finding who did this to my son. I swear I’ll make them pay for brutally murdering my child. I swear.”
I rolled my eyes.

I’d like to see you try, I thought.
Nancy showed up minutes later, Cynthia’s twins in her hands.

After the church service was over, the casket was placed into the hearse.

Cynthia, Nancy, Jason, the twins and Mr. Banda senior got into one of the family cars and followed the hearse to Leopard’s Hill cemetry where Justin’s remains were put to rest.

Of course Cynthia staged some drama as the casket was being lowered into the grave.
“Bury me with him,” she said in-between loud sobs, attempting to jump into the grave but for Jason and his dad holding her back. “I can’t watch my husband go like this. I can’t! It’s hurts. It hurts so bad that even breathing seems painful…”

But Justin’s ashes were buried and everyone paid their last respects. As they all went back to the cars, I stepped right in front of Justin’s fresh grave and whispered scornfully, “I hope you burn in hell, beloved brother in-law!!!”
