“What a tragic event that has happened to the madam.” said Agnes calmly, washing the dishes. “I admit I don’t really like her but it’s sad that her baby was kidnapped on the night he was born. Indeed, this world is cruel!”
“My dear,” I said, checking on the beef stew that I was preparing. “You can say that again.”

It had been three days since the incident and Nancy had remained confined in her room ever since, crying.
“Am even afraid to take her food to her you know?” Agnes said. “Would you mind taking her food up to her room?”
I shrugged. “No way!” I sternly said. “if you who has worked for her longer than me’s literally afraid of her what more me? And why should I bother taking the food when I know she’s just going to throw it in my face. She can starve to death for all I care.”
Agnes stopped washing the dishes and turned, facing me. “Mable, don’t say that.” she scolded. “The lady’s hurting.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. “Agnes,” I said, turning too. “That woman isn’t the first person to lose a child on earth. I’ve lost two and I didn’t react the way she is. If you ask me, she’s just being childish. What will crying and confining herself in her room do? Bring back her lost child?”

“My God!” gasped Agnes. “You’re so bitter. Do you have some personal issues with the boss or what? You can tell me, am your friend.”

S--t! I’d let my anger get the better of me. I shook my head hurriedly and went back to preparing the beef stew. “I have nothing against her.” I said in a barely audible tone.
That afternoon, Cynthia called me to her room.
“Madam,” I said, closing the door behind me, “you called me?”
She fervently nodded, cuddling her sleeping twins. She asked me to take a seat and then handed me an orange envelope.
“Your salary.” she said, slumping back onto her bed.
I counted the money, it was a sum of K800.
So this is the raise they were talking about, I thought. K200? No matter, I’ll get it. If only they knew this same money’s being used to pay for their doom… They are literally paying for their own graves to be dug…
At 8:23 PM, seated in my house in Mtendere and drinking vodka, I gave Rodgers a call.
“Boss?” he enthusiastically said.
“Watagwan man? Have you managed to do the task I gave you?”
“Yes.”

A few days back, I had come to learn that Justin had been cheating on Cynthia with some girl called Naomi. The task I’d given Rodgers was simply to steal the girl’s phone.
“Good,” I said to Rodgers on the phone, “I’ll send you a text which you’ll then forward to Justin using the girl’s phone. Is that clear?”
“Crystal clear.”

I cut the line and sent Rodgers a text that read, “bae, I miss you. But I’ve got something important to tell you. You have to come and pick me up right away. If you don’t, I’ll come to your house and expose our relationship. But am certain you don’t want things to get that ugly.

Am by the roadside opposite that chapel near Amake Chilu’s Store. Love you.”
Rodgers texted me to say he’d forwarded the text.
“Good,” I typed back, “now get rid of the goddamn phone. Expect your mula tomorrow. Good night.”

And I switched my phone off. Grabbing my bottle of vodka, I left the house and strode over to the garage where I always parked my Altezza. I didn’t want my nosy neighbours to know I owned such an expensive car lest they start suspecting me. I arrived at the garage, got into my Altezza and drove off to the place where I had lured Justin to.
