A few seconds later, bags of cash were being loaded into the van.

“Jojo,” said Lydia worriedly, “how come it’s only you here? Where are Marcus and Joni?”

“They’ve been gunned down by the police,” said Jojo breathlessly.
“But we didn’t hear any gunshots.” shocked, I said.

“Will you drive faster!” snapped Jojo, closing the door of the van. He went on to say, “it’s obvious they were using silencers, dumby! Sometimes I wonder how Marcus thought you to be smart.”
Trust Jojo to ridicule me whenever he got a chance. But tonight, I ignored him and focused on the road ahead.

“But how did you manage to escape?” Lydia asked him.
From the rear-view mirror, I could see Jojo smirk. “That, my darling,” he said, leaning back in his seat, “is a long story!”
“S--t!” I cursed loudly.

“What’s wrong?” asked Lydia hurriedly.
“The police are after us!” I exclaimed, stepping on it so that the car was now cruising. I had noticed a police car following us intently in the rear-view mirror.

Jojo patted my shoulder. “I know you are great at this,” he said, grinning, “you’ll certainly get us out of this shitty situation.
Coming from him, that was flattering. I smiled maliciously, “Adjust your seatbelts guys,” I said, swaying the car ominously so that the tires made a loud screeching noise as we joined another road, “we’re going for a ride!”

After literally playing a game of cat and mouse with the police for over an hour, I finally lost them.
“She did it!” shouted Lydia enthusiastically, “Jezebel’s the best!”
And now I drove to our hideout. The hideout was some warehouse in the outskirts of Lusaka.

“How much is there in total?” Lydia asked as we dragged the bags of money into the warehouse.

“Loads of cash, baby.” said Jojo curtly, “loads of cash.”
“It’s sad that Marcus and Joni are no more.” I said, sitting on a four legged wooden chair.

“On the contrary,” said Jojo, “I think it’s great those idiots are no more. This simply means more money for everyone present here.”

No sooner had Jojo said his last word than I heard a gunshot. Jojo toppled over the bags of money and face first, fell to the ground, blood oozing from the back of his head, dead! Lydia was standing over him, a gun in her hands.

“Lydia!” I gasped. “What’ve you done?” I added, standing up.
“Not another step!” Lydia warned.
I raised my hands in surrender. “Please don’t do this.” I said, trying to reason with her.

“This gang’s finished!” she yelled. “What with the leader gone? I’ll simply kill you and take this money and leave this goddamned country. You don’t know what I’ve been through to get here.”
“Lydia,” I warily said, “I’ve been through s--t too. My scars are proof of that. Let’s talk this over like civilized people.”
“Did you say civilized people?” she asked, laughing. “My uncle was a civilized man but he didn’t hesitate to molest me every night. He didn’t hesitate to slash my face when I tried to fight him off me one night. That’s why I killed him.” she paused, evidently enjoying this revelation. “Yes, I cut his d--k and fed it to him. I then escaped to the streets where I met Marcus. He was like the father I never had. And he’s gone too!” she was now sobbing.

“Lydia,” I said, “I understand your pain. Trust me. My sister makes your uncle sound like a saint…” and I narrated my story to her.
