8 MONTHS LATER.
The weather was chilly, and way too windy. Typical August anyway.

I was seated behind my desk, thinking about the last eight months. Never in my wildest dreams had I thought I would one day fall in love. But I did. That too, with Jason Banda. And I believed the feeling was mutual.

Cynthia had thrown a tantrum when she learnt I was gonna get married to Jason soon. Yes, Jason and I had gotten engaged two weeks back whilst Cynthia and Justin had gotten engaged two months back. So apart from being sisters, Cynthia and I were going to be sisters in law, weird right?

Jason’s dad, Jason Banda Senior had been thrilled when he learnt both his sons were going to marry the Chilumbas.
“What wonderful taste my sons have!” he had enthusiastically announced at mine and Jason’s engagement party.

The only person who wasn’t happy about all this was my mum. She kept on reminding me my mission was to get back dad’s land. But what was I to do? I had fallen in love!
Still, I wasn’t gonna give up. But I had changed my plans, as a test for Jason’s love, I had plans of asking him to willingly give me back the land. Sell it to me if need be.
My thoughts took me as far as the many romantic kisses Jason and I had now shared. To think I had once pretended to be mad at him over a kiss made me feel stupid and dumb. But till now, there’s was zero sex between Jason and I. I wasn’t gonna take any chances. No marriage, no sex!

Now my thoughts wandered off to the shopping mall I had been putting up for Mr. Njobvu. It was coming along just fine. Everything was going on just fine.

Little did I know my life was gonna turn into hell in just a few weeks.

A fierce howl of wind blowing through the massive window in my office was what snapped me from my reverie. The wind sent papers flying all over the marble floor. Scowling, I hurried over to the window and closed it shut.

I sighed as I stooped down to pick up all the papers scattered on the floor and put them in order. As I picked up the papers, I stumbled upon a certain paper that had kept me worried all morning. Brushing the problem aside, I piled the paper on top of the other papers. I had barely placed the pile of papers inside a folder when my office landline buzzed. I guessed it was Nancy.

“Yes?” I said.
“Catherine Chilumba?” it was a male voice which I couldn’t place.
“Yes.” I warily said. “Who’s this?”
“The shopping mall you’re putting up in Meanwood just collapsed.”

The man had hardly uttered his last word when I felt light headed and slumped into my leather chair, hyperventilating!

“Driver,” I said, slumping back in my seat, “Would you kindly drive faster? Am going nuts!”

I was seated in my car’s backseat, Nancy by my side. The chauffeur was driving us to Meanwood. The news of the half finished shopping mall collapsing had left me devastated. This was a huge project and so much money had been spent on it. Everything was a blur to me, how on earth would a building just collapse?

“Cathy,” said Nancy politely, patting my shoulder, “relax. It might as well just be a prank. You yourself told me you don’t know who the anonymous caller is so I don’t get why you are so worked up.”

I glared at Nancy incredulously. If she weren’t my cousin, I would have fired her ages ago! How was it possible for someone to be that dumb?

“Nancy,” I said, brushing her hand off my shoulder, “Someone just told me the mall has collapsed and you here asking me to relax? My dear, this is August, not April the 1st! If you have nothing nice to say, please keep your mouth shut!”

Nancy scowled. “Am sorry.” she said in a low tone.

Now there was silence in the car which forced me to recall the events of the morning.
