Monster Unleashed - Season 1 - Episode 2

.
“Don’t worry,” said our family doctor, closing mum’s bedroom door from outside, “it was just one of her asthma attacks. And, her blood pressure had risen but she’ll be fine. She just needs ample bed-rest.”

Luckily, mum’s inhaler was in one of the vases in the lounge so I’d given it to her and her attack had subsided. Cynthia had clicked her tongue the moment mum had started gasping for breath and muttered, “Drama queen!” she had then scuffled off to her room upstairs.

Nancy, Mr Sikanyika and I had taken mum upstairs and helped her into her room where we la!d her on her four-poster bed.
“Am calling the doctor.” I said, grabbing my phone from my bumshort pocket.
“There’s no need,” mum had protested, “I feel fine, really.”

But I had ignored her and phoned Dr Mundui who had turned up half an hour later. Mr Sikanyika had left shortly after the doctor arrived saying he had errands to run.
So here we were, I and Dr Mundui. Nancy had remained with mum in her bedroom whilst I walked the doctor to the door.

Dr Mundui glanced at me as we descended the stairs. “I didn’t get the chance to be at your father’s funeral.” she warily said. “My condolences. That man was a good man, may his soul rest in eternal peace.”
“Amen.” I said, my voice breaking.

Thinking about dad made me emotional. It had only been 10 days since dad’s departure but it felt like he had been gone for years!

After walking the doctor to the door, I went back to mum’s bedroom.
“Nancy,” I said, glancing at my wristwatch and heading where mum and Nancy were seated, “it’s past 8 AM. The court session’s scheduled for 10 AM. We can’t afford to be late!”

“I know.” said Nancy, standing up and kissing mum on the forehead. “Let me go freshen up.” she added and left the room.
I sat besides mum. “Mum, let me also go freshen up. You know how important this case is.”

“Yes my dear.” said mum, sitting up and leaning against a pillow which was propped against the wall. “Am confident you’ll win the case. After all, that land is rightfully ours.”

“Yes mum. But the Bandas have title deeds too. How they got them, I don’t know.”
“They must have forged them. After all, they’ve always been your father’s rival and I hear they’ve had their eyes set on that piece of land for years!”

I slightly frowned. “Well,” I said, getting up, “they should brace themselves cause our company’s the rightful owner of that land. And when I win the case, am going to put up a magnificent shopping mall. Unlike that ramshackle they-”

“Easy my daughter, the clock’s ticking. You better get going.”

I kissed mum on the forehead and turned to leave the room. I had just turned the doorknob when she spoke. “A piece of advice,” she briskly said, “I hear their new CEO, Jason Banda’s extremely handsome.”
“So?” I said, snorting.
“Be careful, don’t let his looks woo you.”
“Mum,” I said, smiling and staring at her intently, “men are the last thing on my mind. Believe me.”

That being said, I left the room and went straight to mine where I had a shower.
After the shower, I settled for a cream white suit and pink shirt.

I glanced at myself in the mirror.
Am beautiful… I know I am. Let me complement my beauty by adding a little make up.

I wasn’t the type to go around exaggerating my beauty when I knew I was more than perfect the way I was.

I let my Peruvian hair fall on my shoulders and settled for black heels.

No sooner had I finished putting on the heels than I heard a knock on my door.
“Come in,” I called, thinking it was one of the househelps, “the door’s not locked.”

I was taken aback when I saw who it was. Cynthia rarely came to my room so I was shocked to see her. According to her, my room was contagious and she didn’t wanna catch whatever pandemic was present in there.

“What do you want? I scowled, getting up from the bed where I had been seated.
“I want my shares.” said Cynthia flatly, folding her arms dramatically.
“What shares?”
She snorted. “Dad wasn’t your father alone, he was mine too. It’s just fair that I get a share of the company.”
I took a few strides towards her so that we now stood face to face.
“Dad was suffering from heart failure,” I calmly said, “not brain failure!”
Cynthia loudly clicked her tongue. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It means, dad knew what he was doing when he left you out of the company. What do you know about real estate?”
Cynthia frowned and said, “I can hire people who know about real es-”
“Are you even listening to yourself?” I snapped at her. “You are an air hostess. That surely pays you a lot. And, before dad died he strictly told me to-”
“I don’t care about what that old fool said on his deathb-”

Cynthiadidn’t get to finish her sentence as I slapped her hard across the face.
She held her cheek in pain. “How dare you?” she said through gritted teeth.
“No, how dare you call our dad a fool?” I said, glaring at her. Never had I la!d a finger on Cynthia in our entire lives but she had crossed the line by calling dad a fool. I wasn’t gonna tolerate such!
“The truth hurts huh?” said Cynthia, still holding her left cheek. “What kind of father’s so partial? Leaving me a pet? Am gonna flash it down the toilet! And the Jeep? I drive a Porsche for crying out loud!”
“Cynthia,” I said, taking deep breaths, “what you do with what dad left you is none of my business so please leave my room.”

“Excuse me?”
“You heard me right, get out!”
Cynthia glared at me. “You and mum have both la!d your filthy hands on me today. But let me warn you, you’ll pay for this!”
“And what will you do to us?” I said, folding my arms and glaring at her. “Throw us both down the stairs?”
“By the time am done with you,” Cynthia replied, turning on the spot and heading for the door. She glanced over her shoulder, “you’ll wish I’d only pushed you down the stairs.”

“Empty threats!” I yelled after her as she b@nged the door shut after leaving.
Little did I know Cynthia wasn’t making empty threats…
