ONCE A LOVER - Season 1 - Episode 19

“But this videos can be helpful, I can use them
to bail Daniel out of the police custody and even
terminate his exorcise and rustication.” I said
serenely to myself and I switched off the phone
and I ejected the memory card.
“But am I bold enough to do this?” I questioned
rhetorically.

“I must be a secret agent if I am to do this.
Daniel can’t stay in the police custody since I
have something that may help to aid his
release.” I paused.

“Okay, assuming that I am to do this, how will I
do it?” I questioned rhetorically heaving a heavy
sigh of relief. Just then Mama alarming voice
could be heard from outside.

“Ola! Ola!!” She called with an earsplitting tone.

“Mama, you’re back?” I asked childishly as I
reluctantly barged out of my room.
“What about Daniel? Is he back?” I asked
serenely.

“Daniel!” Mama sigh
“Daniel is in the police custody, he is accused of
many things apart from the riot he caused…”
Mama uttered but I barged into her word,
restraining her from concluding her statement.


“A thief?” I sighted surprisingly.
“Daniel is never a thief, he is honest and
straightforward and you also know that.” I
rebutted instantaneously
“The policemen accused that he is a thief, that
he stole the principal’s phone…” Mama
elucidated.

“What is his response?” I asked impatiently.
“He was adamant to be mute and he refused to
utter a word all effort by the policemen to
convince him to say something proved abortive.”

Mama explained but unfinished.

“I don’t even know the kind of demons that are
living in that boy; he is too courageous and
stubborn. I pray his courageousness won’t land
him in trouble some other time.” Mama
concluded as she makes her way into her room.

I shamble to my room depressingly. My legs
seemed too heavy for me to walk and my head
seemed brainwashed, I was totally depressed,
glum and heartbroken.

I slammed the door behind myself and I rest my
head on my tattered bed.

“I have to do this, Daniel can’t be punished
unjustly.” I said to myself as the light fade off
gradually but spontaneously.

NEXT DAY – 6:40am
“Ola, I said you aren’t going to school today, how
many students of your school have you see in
school uniform this morning?” Mama barked
angrily at me.

“Mama, please let me go, please, I misplaced a
note and I textbook I borrowed from a bully
student yesterday and I have to find it before it
get into the hand of a thief…” I lied but
unfinished.

“I said you’re not going to school today.” Mama
replied loudly.

“Good morning Mama Ola.” Behold it was
Daniel’s mother. I shook my head in pity and I blame myself for not sneaking out when I got the
opportunity because I know that Daniel’s mother
will also opposed my plan to go to school.
“Good morning Mama Daniel, hope you sleep
well?” Mama replied smiling at her neighbor and friend.

“Please Mama, let me go.” I pleaded shedding
crocodile tears.

“Ola, you’re going to school, right?” Daniel’s
mother asked.

“Yes ma, but she insisted that I won’t go to
school today.” I defended.

“Mama Ola, please let him talk me to the school,
I have to see the principal on behalf of my son.”

Daniel’s mother begged.
“It’s okay Mama Daniel.” Mama concluded and I
let out a smile from my face.

I have drafted a letter. Letter? Slip of tongue I
mean threatening note/memo which I planned to
drop inside the school mail box. I drafted the
letter with handwriting not at all similar to mine.

“No, the mailbox won’t work, I may be caught, I
have to drop the letter on the principal’s table
inside his office… how am I going to do that?” I
thought just then Daniel’s mother called from
behind.

“Ola, please let go.” She uttered while tying her
veil.

We alighted from the bus and I led the way to
the school compound. The students were very
scanty and measly and it doesn’t seem any
school activity is going on. I looked around the
school premises and I could see Mr. Anume and
the principal discussing infront of the Principal’s
office.
“That’s the principal ma.” I whispered pointing
my index finger at the principal and I could feel
my heart pounding and hammering.
“God, I really need your help to save my friend.” I
prayed serenely.
“Let go and meet him.” Daniel’s mother
commanded and I concurred.

“Good morning sir.” I greeted the Principal and
Mr. Anume.
“Good morning sir.” Daniel’s mother greeted but
on her knee.


“Please stand up woman.” Mr. Chorus begged.

“My scholar, please, monitor those junior
students that are cleaning the principal’s office.”

Mr. Anume commanded. I was really
overwhelmed with joy and happiness.
“So, what seems so hard and difficult to
implement, God Almighty successfully made way
for me to execute my mission.” I thought as I
left for the Principal’s office with my heart
throbbing with joy.
“Sweep under the table very well.” I commanded
the junior student sweeping the floor.

“You can go and I must comment that you did an
excellent job.” I elucidated and the junior
students left the office with broad smiles on their
faces.

“Where can I drop this note?” I thought biting my
index finger with my well-structured set of teeth.

“Oh! The camera.” I remembered as I moved in a
filmy manner to change the switch. Fortunately
for me, there was no light since the camera was
an electric one which was only power with
electrical power. I dropped the letter on the
principal’s table.

“Nice one.” I sighted and I placed a notebook on
the threatening letter and I walked out of the
principal’s office in a hazy manner.
“Sir, your office is set and ready.” I announced to
the principal who was discussing with Daniel’s
mother.


“Okay, call Leo for me.” Mr. Chorus commanded.
“Leo?” I sigh bleakly and I shamble to Senior
Leo’s classroom.

“Senior, good morning.” I greeted stooping my
head as a sign of respect.

“What do you want?” Senior Leo barked loudly
and impolitely with some kind of husky voice.
“The principal asked me to summon you to his
office.” I announced looking at the floor
depressingly.
“The principal? Okay move.” Senior Leo
commanded as I led the way to the principal’s
office.

“What about that your friend, have you heard
from him?” Senior Leo asked mockingly.
“Not at all senior.” I replied without looking back.

“Okay.” Senior Leo concluded as he entered his
father’s office.

“Leo, I need some junior students to pack the
books in the store and tidy up the store for me.”

Mr. Chorus explained.

“Okay sir.” Senior Leo replied and he walked out
of the principal’s office.

Shortly, battalion of students could be seen
walking behind Senior Leo, he was holding his
leather belt in substitute of cane.
“Now, go into the office and clean the store.”

Senior Leo barked at the junior students and
they sluggishly and reluctantly walked into the
principal’s office.

“This would avoid my suspicion.” I though forcing
out a smile.

“What’re you still waiting for?” Senior Leo barked
at me but unfinished.

“You and that idiot called princess won’t be
spare. Daniel’s case is just a warning. The battle
line has just been drawn.” Senior Leo whispered
into my left ear and I walked out on him.
“You dare walk out on me? Thought, I expect
such… see you later. You’ll definitely face Leo’s
wrath.” Senior Leo boasted loudly.

I was roaming about the school premises having
nothing tangible and reasonable to do. The
school was kind of boring and uninteresting. I
couldn’t think of any other thing apart for my risk
and menace.

“I pray I triumph.” I spook softly.

I got home exactly 1:11pm; very tired and
hungry, I cheeked the kitchen and my food was
there. I ran into my room to check if there is any
message from the principal and behold there
was a message from Mr. Chorus.

“Wow! Perfect!” I exclaimed happily as I opened
the message to read.

“The message state thus: Good day sir/ma, I saw
your letter on my table, I was shook and
dumbstruck because I don’t know you and how
the letter got to my table, please can we meet
and discuss things one on one? Please, I mean
no harm and I am ready to do anything to cover
these disgraceful secrets of mine, anxiously
waiting for your reply sir/ma. Also please let this
message remain a secret between you and I.” I
read softly but happily and I replied thus: ‘my
requests are stated in the letter Mr. Principal, so
I advice you wear your medicated glass and read
over and over again for clear understanding and
indubitable comprehension, and unfortunately, we
can’t meet one on one Mr. Principal, patiently
waiting for your reply’.
“I switch off the phone after I confirmed the
message was sent and I rush to the kitchen to
fetch my food.
