Nelson ran out from the car and entered the house to see the midwife sitting down with the baby and people he didn’t recognise. When the People saw Peter alighting from the car, they drew closer to him, “where are you coming back from?, someone asked. ” I went to look for my mother, she left the house before Makamba died, Peter said. “Oh! So you don’t know? They asked. ” about what? He asked. “That’s why we came to tell you that……… ” won’t you at least let him go in first? Peter let’s go in, Alex interrupted the woman who was about spilling the beans and took Peter inside. “Is this the baby? Alex asked after crying on Makamba body. ” yes, the midwife nodded just then Alex and Peter walked in. “You are back, the midwife said to Peter. ” yes anuty, is mum not back yet? He asked but the woman just kept silent looking at the baby sleeping peacefully. Peter looked at the faces of the people and knew that something is wrong, “is there anything you’re not telling me? Peter asked with a serious look. “Ermmm you see, you need to be strong in such a pathetic case like this, Alex said not knowing how to start. ” I don’t understand, who knows the way about of my mother? Why has she not returned? He asked. “She’s dead! She had an accident, the midwife said with tears breaking her words. ” dead? Dead in what way? I mean which mother is dead? Peter asked. “Yes she’s dead and lying straight in the mortuary as we speak, Alex said. ” no that can’t be, she left us here and promised to come back so we’ll take Makamba to the hospital, oh God why me!, Peter said and broke down crying while Alex held him. “This is all my fault, I shouldn’t have done what I did, I shouldn’t have……. Someone asked. “I mean, I should have been there for her, Nelson said with pains. ” who even impregnated her? Why is he not here? Another person asked. Peter hearing that question stood up and ran inside the house and came out with a cutlass. Some people seeing him with that took on their heels while others hid themselves looking at him surprised. Nelson and Alex with some few brave guys held him,”where are you going to? Alex asked. “Leave me alone! That b-----d that did this must follow them. It’s his fault I’ve lost my family, he raped and abandoned my sister leaving us to suffer. Would my sister have died if she was not impregnated and abandoned? Would my mother have died if she didn’t go out to beg for money? Peter asked crying loudly while the guys tried their best in collecting the cutlass from him.

Late in the evening when everyone has gone to their different houses, and Makamba was put in the mortuary. ” I don’t know how to start thanking you two for what you’ve done. I’ll give you some money tomorrow so you’ll inform your family there in calabar, Nelson said. ” can’t there just be buried here? It’s not easy transferring two dead bodies to calabar, Peter said. “They have to be buried in their land but their bodies will continue to be in the mortuary here till the burial day. Don’t worry I’ll take care of it, Nelson said. ” hey! Nelson went home and told his wife about the baby he will be bringing in tomorrow and he begged her to accept it. ” you are adopting a child to tell me that I can’t give you children or what?
