Susan ekerete - Season 1 - Episode 8

A few pedestrians jumped out of the way, throwing curses at the red Toyota Corolla that barrelled through the streets of Uyo.

Other drivers honked their horns and threw their arms out in frustration, wondering what was chasing the female driver of the car. A woman selling food hissed as the car dashed past her stall, but she scowled at one of her customers grunted out between swallowing balls of fufu, “That’s how women drive na. No control, just flying anyhow.”The woman hissed virulently and responded to the delight of the other females eating in the stall. “Eh, man that can drive, you sef control your throat first. See how your fufu is flying noisily down your throat.”Susan sped on, unaware of the gender war she had left in her wake. Her mind was caught between anger and fear. She had allowed Asuquo pick up their daughter from school a few times before he moved to Abuja, but it had been almost two years since and she wondered why the school would let him take her without calling to confirm if it was okay. They knew she was estranged from her husband, and they should have called despite the fact that he had picked her before; what if he just took Cherish to Abuja? Asuquo was impulsive when angry; he could very well do it just to repay her for the morning’s incident. She prayed as she drove, muttering fervently.God please let him not take my baby away. She repeated the phrase as she finally pulled up to her house and switched off her car. Her hands fisted as she saw Asuquo’s jeep parked outside her front door. She hurried out of her car, juggling her bags and shoes. She could see her neighbour’s door open- probably Nancy coming out to watch the drama to come- but she didn’t stop to talk to the woman. Just as she stepped through her front door, she realized there had been another car parked behind the jeep. She realized the car was familiar and just as her mind made the connection, she turned the short corner to her living room.Asuquo and Michael sat opposite each other, their huge bodies filling the chairs they were seating in. Susan gasped as Cherish ran from where she had been sprawled on pooh the bear, watching a cartoon show, and crashed into her mother in welcome.“Mummyyyyy!” the girl yelled happily, hugging Susan’s thighs. “See daddy is here. He came to pick me from school andall my friends saw him. He bought me newtoys and shoes and a dress and promised to buy me ice-cream!”Susan fell to her knees and hugged her daughter tight, eyes closed as relief surged through her. She didn’t understandwhy her daughter’s tutor was sitting in herliving room but she just wanted to relish the fact that her baby was safe first.“Cherish darling, are you okay? I’m so sorry I forgot to come to your school by two.”The little girl pulled back from her mother and stared at her face. “Well, that’s okay Mummy. I didn’t wait too long before daddy came to get me. Why are you crying?”Susan wiped away the tears she had not known were inching down her cheeks. “Oh. I’m just happy to see you, my baby.” She said with a low laugh.Cherish arched a small brow and lightly pinched Susan’s cheek. “And you say I’m the da… drat… dramatic one.

Maybe you’rewatching too much Disney Junior too, Mummy.”Susan laughed, hearing Michael echo her amusement at the way the girl had struggled with the big word. She hugged her again. “I’ll fix your lunch now, but do me a favour and go read a book in your room for a while, okay?”Cherish frowned, looking back shamefacedly at the big bear sprawled on the living room floor. She leaned close to her mother and whispered. “Mummy, are you mad because I let Mr Davies see Pooh? I’m sorry, mummy. I can take him inside.”Susan smiled at her daughter, holding on to her self-control. “It’s perfectly fine, my darling. I’m not angry at you. I just need totalk with your father okay?” she looked over the girl’s head at Asuquo. He smirkedand blew her a silent kiss. “It’s just grown up talk. It won’t take long. We may get loud, but don’t worry alright?” She added tightly.Cherish scowled, but nodded and left for her room, pausing to blow a kiss to her father. When the little girl disappeared through the door that led to her room, and the lock closed with a click, Susan immediately launched herself towards Asuquo. The only thing that stopped her outstretched arms from reaching him was Michael. Smoothly, he caught her mid-lunge and held her firmly as she raged at her ex-husband.Outside her own apartment, Nancy’s eyes widened as she overheard Susan’s expletives drift out to her. She had never heard her easy-going neighbour sound that angry before.

She listened avidly, titillated at the excitement and wondering if she would see a physical fight. She would have gist for her husband when he returned from work.
