From the way Asuquo’s eyes widened, it was obvious he had realized his mistake before Susan even reacted. He cleared his throat and glanced away.“Anyway, that’s by the way. If you want to be chasing men up and down, that’s your business. Just don’t teach my daughter that.”Susan gaped at him, incredulous. It was almost dizzying the way her ex-husband had skipped from one insult to another. “Don’t you dare change the subject, although we will revisit the nonsense you’ve just said. What is this talk about a boyfriend? Asuquo, have you been following me?”He refused to meet her eyes. “Why would I follow you? Don’t I have better things to do with my time?”“It would appear not.” Susan snapped, eyes furious. “If I see hide or hair of yours anywhere near me or Cherish uninvited, I will drag you to the police.”The ugly look returned to Asuquo’s face. “Don’t threaten me, Susan. I can still…”Susan took a furious step towards him. “Still do what? Do you think you can get away with threatening me anymore? I left you because of that bullshit you were bringing my way, and if you push me, I swear to heaven, you will find yourself cooling your heels in prison if I don’t kill you first!”She only realized she had been shouting when she felt arms restraining her. Two security guards had been drawn to the commotion and had decided to wade in.“Madam, please calm down.” one of the guards pleaded with her, while the other one stepped close to Asuquo, frowning. Both men were familiar with her and had always known her to be calm and friendly, so they stared suspiciously at her ex-husband.Susan felt her annoyance ebb, and she had to fight down a feeling of embarrassment. “It’s fine, I’m okay.” She could feel her limbs shaking with the forceof her anger, and she felt tears threaten to fill her eyes. She was reminded unpleasantly of the days she had spent being afraid of a man that was supposed to protect her.

She had vowed her ex-husband would never have that kind of power over her anymore.“This is a private conversation.” Asuquo said to the guards, filled with masculine bluster. “No one is getting hurt, it’s just a small misunderstanding. Can we have some time to sort it out? You know how it is between husbands….”“Ex-husband.” Susan interrupted tersely. She turned to the guards. “On that note, please escort this person off the premises and if he ever tries to come inside here after today, do not let him.”After she noticed Asuquo’s look of incredulous anger with satisfaction, she turned and left, her heels tapping furiously.

She could hear her ex-husband calling her name over the sound of the guards insisting that he left at once, and she refused to turn back till she entered the ground floor of the office building. She didn’t break down till she was safely alonein her office. Her day had started full of self-confidence and suffered a quick turnabout.

She wipedat the tears streaming down her face and laughed at her reflection in a small hand mirror. Her carefully applied make-up wasruined. She only hoped her day wasn’t ruined as well. She revisited that thought when she realized, some minutes past two o’clock inthe afternoon that she had completely forgotten about her daughter. She had was supposed to have been at the girl’s school about an hour earlier, but her morning encounter with her ex-husband had rattled her more than she had imagined.

She had never been late to pick up her daughter from school. On her way out of her office, her mobile phone rang. She groaned when she saw it was her neighbour Nancy calling. She hoped the pregnant woman wasn’t calling her to settle another fight with her husband. She ignored the first two calls, but when the phone rang the third time as she reached where her car was parked, it occurred to her that it could be something more serious. The woman was almost dueto have her baby. What if that was the emergency?READVictor Lindelof: Girlfriend Confirms Move With Cryptic Picture (Photos)She slid behind the steering wheel of her car and clicked on the green button on herphone. “Hello? Nancy, are you okay?”The woman sounded surprised at the question. “Oh hi Susan. Yes, I’m fine o. Please where are you?”“On my way to go pick Cherish from school.” Susan replied, twisting the key in the ignition. Her Toyota Corolla purred to life, and for the umpteenth time she congratulated herself silently for the purchase of her problem-free car. She cranked the AC on and bent over to slide off her high heels. “Why?”“Hmm! To pick Cherish? But she’s at home already o.” the woman said.Susan froze, shoe half of her foot. “What do you mean? I haven’t gone to…”“Ehen! I knew it was unusual, that’s why I called. She was brought home by one man…”The phone beeped in her ear and she pulled it away and stared at it. The call had been terminated by what was probably network issues, which she had been having all day, but Susan did not bother calling Nancy back. She was already putting her car into gear and roaring past the surprised security guards. If Asuquo had picked Cherish up from school, she would make good on her promise to kill him.
