Sharon - Season 2 - Episode 15

Just two weeks through the holidays, and I was already missing Sharon. Eunice had traveled for her Youth service program whilst Frank that came back from boarding school, traveled the same week to my cousin’s place in port Harcourt for holidays. Jannie and Maxwell weren’t coming back for break so, it was just me, mum and dad. I spent my mornings in my mum’s shop till she’d finish the necessary chores at home then come bail me then I’d watch movies or go to PlayStation or field in the Afternoon. These sets were all fun for me but couldn’t just give me the break I needed from thinking about Sharon. I did hang out with Kelvin and the outlawz too but, that didn’t help either. One Night I decided to call her with my mum’s phone. We were watching a home movie that when she dozed off, I took her phone and sneaked into my room, took the paper she wrote the number from my bag and dialed it. It rang twice and I ended the call after having a double mind. I kept the phone with me hoping she’d call but she didn’t till I slept off. My mother’s phone alarm woke me in the morning by 4:00am and I snoozed it immediately. There was a missed call on the screen so, I checked anxiously hoping to see Sharon’s number but disappointedly it was Jannie, she’d called by 11:00pm.

“Hand me my phone”. My mum walked in from their bedroom immediately and snatched the phone from my hand and I slept back.

Days passed and my mother never kept her phone on the loose, my dad banned me from touching Electronic gadgets at home except TV after last term’s result and the ban is yet to be lifted. So, my mum keeping her phone from me was for my own good actually. My mum noticed my boredom one day and proposed that I went on holiday to namesake’s house but I refused and insisted I didn’t want to go anywhere for my holiday and she let me. On a normal day I’d be the one begging for this holiday to my namesake’s house because I always enjoyed it there. His kids were all lovely especially his last born whom is A year older than me. She was my closest then and always the most reason I loved staying there. Moreover there house is located at Hilltop too like Sharon’s but I wouldn’t know my way much around there then. Now I only want to be at home because of my mum’s phone, it’s the most comfortable means for me to call Sharon since Eunice wasn’t around.
One night while watching movies as well, she left to ease herself and kept her phone on the center table. I took it and hid before she came back, she went to sleep without remembering her phone. It was already late but I still called anyway. It rung all through and no one picked it, I redialled twice and it was the same no response. I dropped the phone on the table where my mum had kept it, and turned to go to my room in annoyance then the phone started ringing. I took it and silenced it immediately, seeing it was Sharon’s number I received it but said nothing. I kept quiet to hear her voice first.

“Hello? Hello? Who’s this?”. Her lovely voice asked from the other end and I smiled to myself. just hearing her voice calmed my anxiety.

“Hey cherry”.I said in a low voice.
” hey baby”. She called too.
“Don’t call me that”. I blushed.
“why?”. she asked.
” Am not a child “. I replied her proudly and I could hear her laugh.
“So, you finally decided to remember me”. she asked.

” You know I’d never forget you cherry “.
” And you’re just calling me today”. she asked again and I paused for a while. if only she knew what it took me to call her.
“well the thing is your boyfriend is quite a busy guy”. I lied and I could hear her laugh.
” Well it’s a good thing I have your number now “. she said and I said nothing. I felt like telling her the phone wasn’t mine but, on a second thought I waved it off. We chatted for a while and I was speaking to her directly from my heart and I guess it surprised her.
“Sorry. is this really Godson?”. She asked when we’ve talked for a while and I smiled. I knew exactly why she asked.
” No. it’s your Boyfriend actually “. I said proudly and she laughed. I’d made her laugh a lot that night than I ever did since we started dating.
” just that my boyfriend sounds different in school “. She said and I smiled to myself. I understood what she meant, I haven’t asked after her a lot since we met and tonight I was speaking to her directly from my heart mainly because I wasn’t looking into her eyes and she wasn’t around me then.
“Really? Well that’s because your boyfriend loves phone calls”. I lied. I was only shy of telling her my true feelings face to face. I told her ” I love you ” when we were about to end the call, she asked me to repeat what I said that she didn’t hear me well.

“I said I Love you?”. I said shyly and she chuckled.

” Well it took quite long to say it”. She said. It was the first time I ever i told her those magic words, and she was so excited about it. I even went on to ask her to dream about me and she asked the same of me too after having her laugh. She didn’t need to Ask me, I dream about her frequently.

She sent me a text once we ended the call.
“Tonight was fun. We should do this often”. She wrote. I shook my head after reading the text, if only she knows what it took before I could call her that night. I wasn’t planning on calling her again till further notice so, often wasn’t an option at all. I deleted the message then saved her number as ” Cherry ” In my mum’s phone. She hardly goes through her contact so I didn’t expect her to see it soon, after all I’d deleted our call history. I went to bed with the best smile on my face. The next night I was busy watching Merlin while my mum had dozed off on her seat when my mum’s phone started ringing. I took it and gave to her without checking who was calling. I didn’t pay attention to what they were saying but, I heard my mum ask.

“I’m not sister Eunice and who are you please?”. I still didn’t feel disturbed about it, I felt it was sister Eunice’s friend trying to contact her with my mum’s number.
Then she called me by my native name”Nwachukwu” and asked me to take the phone, I collected it to connect it back to it’s charger.

“The Call is for you”. She said and I was shocked, that was when I looked at the screen to see cherry boldly written on the screen, I checked the reaction on my mum’s face and there was no need to be scared. But I’d still have explanations to do.
” Hello”. I said in a calm voice putting the phone to my ear.

“Nwachukwu that’s your name also?”. She asked.

” Yes, first name”. I replied her. I was chatting uneasily with her now because of my mum.

“Same as Godson right?”. She asked and I said yes.

” That person is your sister too right? She sounds exactly like sister Eunice “. She inquired and I looked at my mum and smiled. All the ladies in our family share the same voice so I wasn’t surprised.
” That should be my mum?”. I informed and she exclaimed loudly that even my mum heard her and smiled.
“Can I speak to her again please?”. She pleaded but I refused.
“Why don’t you text me your address so, I could visit?”. She asked.
” that’s not a good idea”. I insisted. We talked for a little while, she did the most talking while I just responded now and then till she noticed my uneasiness.
“It’s because of mummy right?”. She asked.

” Sort of”.
“Okay then We’d talk some other time, is tomorrow okay?”. She asked and I stalled. She still doesn’t know that the phone is my mum’s and not mine.
” I don’t know May..may..maybe “. I stammered and I could hear her sigh from the other end.
” Okay then sweet dreams “.
” you too”. I replied her and ended the call immediately and plugged the phone back immediately then turned to face my mother’s questions. But she seemed to have non. She stood up to head to her room then turned to me.

“Why did you save her number with Cherry?”. She asked.

” That’s her pet name”. I answered and she stood there watching me for a while.
“You now save your Friend’s number in my phone, hope this’d be the last”. She said and Left.

“There’d be no other”. I assured her and sighed out in relief as she left. Throughout the holidays Sharon called almost every night, my mum wouldn’t even pick it but just hand it to me and I’d sneak into my room to answer. Even she has gone to her room to sleep, she’d bring it to me and ask me to tell her it’s late. Sharon made my holiday so lovely.
