Episode 1: The Secret Wall

The clock on the wall made a very loud tick-tock sound. It was the kind of sound that felt like it was beating inside your head. The room was very dark and very quiet, except for that one sound. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. It was three o’clock in the morning. This is the time when the whole world is supposed to be asleep. The birds are not singing. The cars are not moving on the street. Even the wind seems to hold its breath. But Amina was not asleep. She was lying in her big, soft bed, and her eyes were wide open. She was staring at the ceiling, but she could not see anything because it was so dark.

Amina turned her body to the side. She wanted to feel the warmth of her husband, Joe. They had been married for five years, and Joe was always there. He was a big man with a kind heart and a very loud laugh. Usually, Joe would be snoring softly, and his body would be like a warm heater next to her. But when Amina reached out her hand, she did not feel any skin. She did not feel any warmth. She felt the cold, flat surface of the bedsheet. The space beside her was empty.

Amina sat up quickly. Her heart began to move a little faster. Where was Joe? Maybe he went to the kitchen to get a glass of water. Maybe he went to the bathroom. She waited for a minute. She waited for the sound of a door closing or the sound of water running in the sink. But there was nothing. There was only the tick-tock of the clock. The air in the room felt very cold all of a sudden. It was the kind of cold that makes the hair on your arms stand up. Amina felt a shiver run down her back. It was a tiny, icy finger crawling down her spine.

Then, she heard it.

It was a very low sound. It was coming from the living room. At first, she thought it might be a ghost. Then she thought it might be the wind blowing through a small crack in the window. But the windows were all shut tight. She listened very carefully. She held her breath so she could hear better. It was a voice. It was a man’s voice. It was Joe. But Joe was not talking the way he usually talked. His voice was deep and very low. It sounded like a hum. It sounded like he was telling a secret to someone.

Amina felt a knot in her stomach. Why was Joe in the living room at three o’clock in the morning? Who was he talking to? They did not have any guests. Their children were away at their grandmother’s house. The house should be empty except for the two of them. Amina moved her legs out of the bed. She did not want to make a sound. She was very careful. She put her feet on the floor. The floor was made of wood, and sometimes it made a loud creak when you stepped on it. She knew exactly where the creaky parts were. She stepped over them like a cat.

She walked toward the bedroom door. Her heart was beating like a drum now. Thump-thump. Thump-thump. She could feel the blood rushing in her ears. She reached out her hand and touched the doorknob. The metal was very cold. She turned it very, very slowly. She did not want Joe to hear her. She pushed the door open just a tiny bit. She peeped through the gap.

The living room was very dark. The only light came from the moon outside, and it was a very thin light. It made the furniture look like big, scary monsters sitting in the dark. Amina looked around the room. She saw the sofa. She saw the television. Then, she saw Joe.

Joe was standing in the corner of the room. He was not near the kitchen. He was not near the window. He was standing in front of the big wall. This wall was special. It was made of old, red bricks. When they bought the house, the man who sold it to them said that wall was very old. He told them never to break it or change it. Amina always thought it was just a nice wall that made the room look pretty. But now, Joe was leaning his head against the bricks. He was pressing his forehead into the hard stone.

Joe was whispering. Amina leaned her head forward to try and understand what he was saying. The words were strange. They were not English words. They were not words from any language she had ever heard before. They sounded like clicking and Hissing. It was a scary sound. It sounded like Joe was talking to the wall, and it sounded like he was waiting for the wall to talk back to him.

Amina felt her hands shaking. She gripped the side of the door to stay still. She wanted to go to him. She wanted to turn on the light and ask him what was wrong. She wanted him to tell her that he was just having a bad dream. But she could not move. Her legs felt like they were made of heavy lead. She was frozen in place.

She watched him. Joe started to move his hands over the bricks. He was touching them gently, like he was stroking a pet. He was looking for something. His fingers moved over the cracks and the rough parts of the wall. He seemed very focused. He did not look like the Joe she knew. He looked like a stranger. He looked like someone who was lost in a very deep and dark dream.

Amina’s throat felt very dry. She tried to swallow, but it hurt. She wanted to call his name. She wanted to say, Joe, please come back to bed. But the words would not come out. It felt like a heavy hand was pressing down on her chest. She watched as Joe leaned in closer. He was so close to the wall now that his nose was touching it. He was speaking louder now, but the words were still a mystery.

Then, everything went very still. Joe stopped talking. He stopped moving his hands. He stood there like a statue. Amina held her breath. She did not move a single muscle. She was afraid that if she even blinked, something bad would happen. The silence in the room was even scarier than the whispering. It was a heavy silence.

Slowly, very slowly, Joe began to move his head. He did not turn around quickly. He moved like a machine. He turned his head slightly to the side. Amina’s eyes went wide. The light from the moon hit his face. Joe’s eyes were not brown anymore. They were not the kind eyes she looked at every morning. His eyes looked red. They were glowing like two hot coals in the dark. They were bright and scary.

Amina felt the air leave her lungs. She could not breathe. She could not scream. She just stood there, looking through the gap in the door. Joe was looking right toward where she was standing. He did not say anything. He just looked. The red light from his eyes seemed to cut through the darkness of the room. Amina felt a wave of terror wash over her. This was not her husband. This was something else.

What was he doing? Why were his eyes red? What was inside that wall? Amina wanted to run, but her feet were stuck to the floor. She was trapped in the dark, watching the man she loved turn into something she did not know. The secret of the wall was right there, and it was much more dangerous than she ever thought.

Why do you think Joe’s eyes turned red in the dark? Is he possessed or is he something else?

What do you think is hidden behind that old brick wall?

Should Amina run out of the house or should she stay and find out the truth?

If you were Amina, would you call out Joe's name at that moment?

Do you want to know what happens next? The mystery of "The Secret Wall" is just beginning! Don't miss out on the chills and thrills of Episode 2.
