Grand Finale: Tribe Rules (2)
The sky was blacker than the darkest night. The wind was still screaming across the big stone bridge. The Spirit of Hate was a giant shadow that looked like a mountain of smoke. Its red eyes were like two burning fires in the clouds. It was waiting for an answer. It wanted the Kings to give up their most precious treasure. The Sun King looked at his golden crown. He thought maybe his power was his treasure. The Rain King looked at his silver staff. He thought maybe his magic was his treasure. They were both very confused. They were both very scared. They did not know what to give to the monster to make it go away.
Kofi and Tiya were standing between their fathers. They felt the cold wind on their faces. They saw the giant storm clouds pulling trees out of the ground. They heard the bridge groaning under their feet. Kofi looked at the blue flower in his hand. The light was almost gone. Then, he looked at Tiya. He remembered how they had to hide in the ruins. He remembered how they were told they could never be friends. He remembered the old rules of the tribes. These rules said that the Sun and the Rain must always be enemies. These rules said that if you were different, you were bad.
Kofi realized something very important. He realized that the rules were not there to help them. The rules were there to keep them afraid. The rules were the things that gave the Spirit of Hate its power. If they followed the rules, they would always be alone. If they followed the rules, they would always be fighting. The rules were like heavy chains on their hearts. They were the most precious things the tribes had kept for a hundred years. But they were bad treasures. They were treasures of fear.
"I know what it is!" Kofi shouted. His voice was small against the wind, but it was very clear. He looked up at his father, the Sun King. "Father, our most precious treasure is not your gold. It is not your crown. Our treasure is our fear! We have kept the old rules like they were gold. We have loved our hate more than we have loved our neighbors. That is what we must give up. We must give up the rules that say we cannot be a family!"
Tiya nodded her head very fast. Her hair was blowing in the wind, but she looked very brave. "Kofi is right!" she cried out to the Rain King. "Father, we have been afraid of the Sun Tribe for so long. We thought the rules kept us safe. But the rules only made us cold. The rules are the treasure the Spirit wants. If we give them up, we have nothing left to hate with!"
The two Kings looked at their children. They were very surprised. They had spent their whole lives thinking the rules were the most important thing in the world. They thought the rules were what made them Kings. But now they saw that the rules were just a prison. They saw that Kofi and Tiya were wiser than any King. The children were not afraid to love. The children were not afraid to change. The Kings felt a great weight lift off their shoulders. They realized that they did not need the old rules anymore.
"We give it up!" the Sun King yelled at the giant shadow. "We give up our fear! we give up our hate! We give up the rules that kept us apart!"
"We give it up!" the Rain King yelled. "We throw away the old ways! From this day, there is no Sun Tribe and there is no Rain Tribe! There is only us!"
The Spirit of Hate let out a terrible scream. It was a sound that made the ground shake. It did not want them to give up their fear. It wanted them to stay angry. It tried to blow a giant blast of black smoke at them. But Kofi and Tiya did not run away. They stepped forward. They reached out their hands. Kofi took Tiya’s hand. Then, they reached back and took their fathers’ hands.
Now, all four of them were standing in a perfect circle. The Sun King, the Rain King, Kofi, and Tiya were all joined together. They were a circle of love. They were a circle of peace. They were a circle of family. As soon as their hands touched, a tiny spark of white light appeared in the very center of the circle. The spark was small at first, like a little firefly. But then it began to grow. It grew bigger and bigger. It was not the yellow light of the sun or the blue light of the rain. It was a pure, brilliant white light.
The white light was so bright that the Spirit of Hate had to cover its eyes. The light was warm and kind. It felt like a big hug from someone you love. The light started to push back the dark clouds. It started to quiet the screaming wind. The light grew until it was a giant blast that filled the whole canyon. It hit the Spirit of Hate right in its chest. The spirit tried to fight back, but the light was too strong. The hate could not live where there was so much love.
The Spirit of Hate began to break apart. It turned into tiny pieces of black dust. The wind blew the dust away until there was nothing left. The red eyes vanished. The giant shadow was gone. The Spirit of Hate was destroyed forever. The sky began to change. The black clouds melted away. The stars came out, and then the moon. The air became sweet and warm. The bridge stopped shaking. Everything was quiet and peaceful at last.
Kofi and Tiya looked at the field next to the bridge. This was the place where the war was supposed to happen. But something amazing was happening instead. In the very middle of the field, the ground began to move. A tiny green leaf poked out of the dirt. This was the Seed of Life from the first story. It had been waiting in the ground for a very long time. It was waiting for the day when the hate would end.
The little plant began to grow very fast. It grew into a bush, and then it grew into a tree. It grew taller than the palace. It grew taller than the mountains. It was a giant, beautiful tree. The trunk was as wide as a house. The bark was smooth and white. The leaves were made of shining silver. And hanging from the branches were giant fruits made of solid gold. The tree glowed with its own light. It was the most beautiful thing anyone had ever seen.
The golden fruits were not just for looking at. They were a gift. One fruit fell from the tree and hit the ground. It broke open, and thousands of tiny seeds flew out. The seeds landed all over the field. Everywhere a seed landed, a new flower grew. The field turned from a place of war into a beautiful garden. The silver leaves of the giant tree made a soft music when the wind blew through them. It was the sound of peace.
The people from both tribes came down from the hills. They were not carrying spears anymore. They were not carrying shields. They were walking slowly, looking at the giant tree. They saw their Kings standing together. they saw Kofi and Tiya holding hands. The people realized that the war was over. They realized that they did not have to be afraid of each other anymore. The people of the Sun Tribe and the people of the Rain Tribe began to talk. They began to laugh. They began to hug each other.
The two tribes decided to become one big family. They did not want to live in separate villages anymore. They decided to build a new city right there around the giant Tree of Life. They used the wood from the old walls to build new houses. They used the stones from the old towers to build schools and parks. It was a very happy time. No one was hungry, and no one was cold. The golden fruits from the tree gave everyone enough food to eat. The silver leaves gave everyone shade.
To celebrate their new life, they had a massive feast. It was the biggest party the world had ever seen. There were long tables covered in delicious food. There were fruits from the Sun lands and fish from the Rain lands. There were sweet cakes and cold water. Musicians from both tribes played their instruments together. They made a new kind of music that was better than anything they had played before. People were dancing in the garden. Children were playing games among the flowers.
In the middle of the feast, the two Kings stood up. They called Kofi and Tiya to the front. The people all became quiet. "These two are our heroes," the Sun King said. He put his hand on Kofi’s shoulder. "They were the ones who were brave enough to be friends. They were the ones who broke the chains of the old rules. Without them, we would still be fighting in the dark."
The Rain King nodded. "Kofi and Tiya showed us that love is stronger than hate. They showed us that being a family is better than being a tribe. They have saved us all." The people started to cheer. They shouted the names of Kofi and Tiya over and over. They threw flower petals into the air. Kofi and Tiya felt very happy. They were just two children who wanted to play together, but they had changed the whole world.
As the sun began to rise the next morning, the new city was full of light. The giant tree stood in the center, watching over everyone. The house that used to be quiet and lonely was now very different. It was the house where the Kings lived together as brothers. The hallways were no longer empty. The rooms were no longer cold. The house was filled with the sound of feet running on the floor. It was filled with the sound of people talking and singing.
But most of all, the house was filled with the laughter of children. Kofi and Tiya were playing in the garden. They were chasing each other around the white trunk of the Tree of Life. They did not have to hide anymore. They did not have to worry about the rules. The rules were gone, and only love was left. The tribes were finally united. The war was just a bad dream from the past. The future was bright and gold, just like the fruit on the tree.
The story of the Sun and the Rain was no longer a story of two tribes. It was a story of one people. It was a story of how a little bit of courage can destroy a giant monster. It was a story of how a simple friendship can save a kingdom. And as the children laughed under the silver leaves, everyone knew that the peace would last forever. The end of the war was the beginning of a beautiful new world.
