Episode 5: The Black Box

The room was very quiet. It was so quiet that Rose could hear the sound of her own breath. The moonlight was still shining on the floor. It was a cold and white light. Rose felt a chill go down her back. The air in the room seemed to get much colder all of a sudden. It was like a window had been opened to a winter night. But the windows were all closed. The cold was coming from the box. Rose was still on her knees. Her hands were on the lid of the black box. She had already turned the key. She had heard the loud click. Now, she was ready to see the truth. She moved her fingers slowly. She began to lift the lid. The wood was heavy and cool. As the lid went up, the smell of old things came out. It smelled like dust and old paper. It smelled like a room that had been closed for a very long time.

Rose was very nervous. Her heart was beating fast. She expected to see something very beautiful. She thought about the gold coins she had imagined. She thought about a sparkling necklace made of diamonds. She thought about a big treasure that would make them rich. She had a small smile on her face for a second. She hoped that this secret was a good secret. She wanted to believe that David was keeping a gift for her. She wanted to believe that he was a hero who had found a treasure. But as the lid opened all the way, the smile went away. Rose’s eyes grew wide. Her heart began to sink. It felt like a heavy stone falling into a deep well. There was no gold inside. There were no diamonds. There was no sparkling jewelry. The box was not full of wealth. Instead, the box was filled with pieces of paper. It was filled with old photographs.

Rose felt very confused. She did not understand. Why would David hide old papers? Why would he use a heavy lock for pictures? She reached her hand into the box. Her fingers were shaking. She felt the paper. It was dry and thin. She picked up the first thing she saw. It was a photograph. The photo was not bright and clear. It had turned a bit yellow with age. It looked like it had been taken many years ago. Rose held the photo up to the moonlight. She wanted to see it better. When she saw the picture, she felt like she could not breathe. It was a picture of a wedding. David was in the picture. He was much younger. He had the same kind eyes and the same big smile. He looked very handsome. He was standing next to a very beautiful woman.

The woman in the photo was wearing a white wedding dress. The dress was long and pretty. She was holding a bunch of white flowers. She was very beautiful. She had a happy smile on her face. David was standing very close to her. They were both smiling at the camera. They looked like they were the happiest people in the world. In the photo, they were cutting a huge cake. The cake had three levels. It was white and had flowers on it. They were holding a knife together and cutting the cake. They looked just like David and Rose did on their own wedding day. David looked so happy. He looked just like he did on the day he married Rose. But there was one very big problem. The woman in the photo was not Rose.

Rose felt a sharp pain in her chest. It felt like someone had pushed a needle into her heart. She looked at David’s young face in the photo. He looked so full of love. He was looking at the woman in the white dress with so much kindness. Rose felt like the room was spinning. She did not understand what she was seeing. She turned the photograph over. There was some writing on the back. The ink was old and a bit faded. It was David’s handwriting. He had written a date. The date was from many years ago. It was from a time long before David and Rose had even met. This meant that David had been married before. He had another wife. He had another life that he never told Rose about.

Rose sat there on the floor. She felt very small. She felt like her whole life was a lie. For ten years, she thought she knew everything about David. She thought they were two people with no secrets. She thought she was the only woman he had ever loved this much. But the photo said something different. The photo showed a different story. Rose looked at the woman’s happy smile. She wondered who she was. She wondered where she was now. Was she still alive? Why did David never mention her? Why did he hide this picture in a black box under the bed? Rose felt a tear run down her cheek. It was a hot and sad tear. She felt like she was looking at a stranger. The man in the photo looked like David, but he felt like a ghost.

Rose began to dig deeper into the box. She did not care about being neat anymore. She wanted to find more. She wanted to know the whole truth. She tossed aside old theater tickets. The tickets were from plays and movies she had never heard of. They were from cities they had never visited together. She found dried flowers that were brown and crunchy. They were very old. They fell apart when she touched them. They were memories that had turned to dust. Rose felt a sense of anger growing in her heart. She felt like David had stolen ten years of her life. He had been living with a secret every single day. He had been looking at her and holding her hand while this box was under the bed. He was the kindest husband, but he was also a man with a hidden past.

She kept digging through the papers. She found old receipts and maps. She found a small menu from a restaurant. Everything in the box was about a life that did not include her. It was a life that David had locked away. At the bottom of the box, she found something else. It was a stack of envelopes. They were all the same size. They were held together with a blue ribbon. The ribbon was tied in a neat knot. The blue color was still bright. It was a very pretty ribbon. Rose’s hands shook as she picked up the stack of letters. She could feel that there were many pages inside. This was not just a photo or a ticket. This was a story. This was where the words were kept.

Rose looked at the blue ribbon. She thought about her promise one last time. She thought about how David had told her to never look. Now she knew why. He was hiding his old life. He was hiding a whole different world. Rose felt a mix of sadness and curiosity. She wanted to stop, but she could not. She had to know what the letters said. She had to know why David was so afraid of her seeing these things. She reached for the ribbon. Her fingers were cold. She pulled on the end of the blue ribbon. The knot came apart very easily. The ribbon fell to the floor like a blue snake. The envelopes were now loose in her hand.

She pulled out the first letter. The paper felt thick and expensive. It was a white envelope with a stamp from a long time ago. She opened it carefully. She did not want to rip the paper. She pulled out the letter. Her eyes moved across the lines of writing. She started to read the words. These words would tell her a story she never wanted to hear. They would tell her about a love that was gone. They would tell her about a secret that was much bigger than a wedding photo. Rose felt the silence of the house pressing against her ears. The truth was finally in her hands. She was about to find out the real reason for the black box. She was about to find out who David really was.

The moonlight was still there, but it felt different now. It felt like a cold eye watching her. Rose read the first few words of the letter. Her breath caught in her throat. The story was beginning to change. The happy life she had with David was starting to feel like a dream that was ending. The black box was no longer a mystery. It was an answer. And the answer was very painful. Rose knew that she could never go back to being the happy wife she was yesterday. She knew that her life would be different from now on. The letters held the key to everything. She gripped the paper tightly and kept reading.

Every word on the page was like a footstep into a dark forest. Rose felt like she was getting lost. She felt like she was losing the David she knew. She wanted to scream, but she stayed quiet. She wanted to cry, but she kept reading. The secret was out of the box now. It was in the air. It was in her mind. It was everywhere. Rose realized that some secrets are kept to protect people, but other secrets are kept because the truth is too hard to say. She wondered which one this was. Was David trying to protect her? Or was he just afraid? She looked at the letters and the photo one more time. The beautiful woman in the white dress was still smiling. But to Rose, that smile now looked like a warning. The warning said that some things should stay hidden. But it was too late for that. The box was open. The ribbon was untied. And the story was finally being told.

Rose felt like the walls of the bedroom were closing in on her. She felt like she was trapped in a room full of ghosts. The ghosts of David's past were all around her. They were in the photos and the letters. They were in the dried flowers and the old tickets. She was the only one who was real. And even she felt like she was fading away. She thought about David on his train. He was far away. He was sleeping or looking out the window. He did not know that his secret was gone. He did not know that Rose was sitting on the floor with his letters. He thought he was safe. But he was not safe. The truth had found a way out. The tiny silver key had done its job. Now, Rose had to do hers. She had to read the words. She had to learn the secret. She had to face the man she loved with the truth.

As she read the first letter, she felt a chill that would never go away. The words were simple, but they were very strong. They spoke of a promise that was broken. They spoke of a heart that was sad. They spoke of a name that Rose did not recognize. Rose felt like she was falling. She was falling into the black box. She was falling into the secret. And there was no one to catch her. The episode of her life as a happy wife was over. The episode of the truth was just beginning. The letter in her hand was the start of a very long night. A night that would change her world forever.
