Baby Mama

Awusi is officially tired of her situation. Fifteen years had gone by, and her marriage was still empty without children . She remembered how people celebrated her wedding, how her mother danced that day, and how her father blessed her with prayers. But none of those prayers had come true. Every day, she woke up with a silent fear in her heart. She wanted to be a mother. She wanted to carry her child in her arms. But the years kept passing, and her womb remained barren.

Kofi, her husband, was a good man, but he was restless. He had money. He had great wealth. People respected him in the community. Yet, there was a hole in his life. “What is the use of wealth when you have no child to inherit it?” he often said. One evening, as they sat at the dining table, he looked at Awusi and spoke with a serious face.

“Awusi, we have been married for fifteen years now. I cannot continue like this. I need a child. If you cannot give me a child in six months, I will bring another wife into this house.” He said.

Awusi’s spoon fell from her hand. “Kofi, please don’t talk like that,” she said with an emotional voice. “Am I God? I have tried. You know how we have prayed. You know how many hospitals we have visited. You know the fasting and prayers we have done. What else can I do?” Tears filled her eyes as she begged. But Kofi did not change his mind. He spoke with a firm voice. “I love you, but love cannot stop the truth. I need a child in six months. That is all.”

The next morning, Awusi woke up with swollen eyes. She refused to eat. She locked herself inside the room and wept. She wept until her wrapper was soaked with tears. She remembered the insults of her husband’s relatives. She remembered how the women in the village whispered behind her back, calling her barren. She remembered the times she went to the hospital and came back with disappointment. She felt empty, useless, and broken. “Why me?” she whispered to herself. “What have I done to deserve this kind of shame?” Her heart was drowning in sorrow.

In the afternoon, Kofi entered the room and found her sitting quietly. He sat beside her on the bed and touched her hand. “Awusi, stop crying. I don’t hate you. But I am not getting younger. I want to raise a child before I grow old. I want to teach my son how to run my businesses. Don’t you understand?” His voice was soft this time, but his words cut deep. Awusi turned her face away. “You want to marry another woman while I am still alive? What will people say? Do you want to disgrace me?”

Kofi sighed. “This is not about disgrace. This is about reality. I want a child. I will not wait forever. I have given you time. Fifteen years is not a joke. My friends are fathers. My mates are grandparents. And me? I am still waiting.” Awusi burst into tears again. “Kofi, please. Be patient. God can do it at any time. Even tomorrow, I can take in. Just believe with me. Don’t give up on me. Don’t give up on us.” But Kofi stood up. His eyes were tired. “Six months. That is my final word.”

That night, Awusi did not sleep. She turned from side to side on the bed. Kofi slept like a man with no worry, but her eyes remained open. She thought of her marriage. She thought of how she cooked for him, how she stood by him when he had nothing, how she supported him when his business was still small. And now, after all these years, he wanted to replace her. The pain was sharp. But in her pain, a thought came. A dangerous thought. She sat up, wiped her tears, and whispered to herself, “I will not lose my marriage.”

The idea grew stronger as she considered it. “I will bring someone to give him a child. A woman who can bear him a son. But she will not take my place. She will not marry him. She will just give us a baby and go. I will pay her for it. I will make her sign an agreement. This will save my marriage. This will silence his people. This will keep me as his wife.” She shook her head slowly as if convincing herself. “Yes, this will work. This is the only way.” Her mind was set.

Awusi thought of who could help her. She needed someone she could trust, someone close, someone who would not betray her. Then a name came to her mind. Ama. Her best friend. The one she had known since childhood. Ama was single, beautiful, and always stood by her. Ama could do it for her. “Yes,” she whispered. “Ama is the one. She will understand. She will help me.” The decision gave her a strange relief. She felt like she had found an answer to her sorrow. She reached for her phone on the table beside the bed.

Her hands trembled as she dialed Ama’s number. She pressed the phone to her ear, waiting. The line rang. After a few seconds, Ama picked up. “Awusi, are you alright? You sound dull. What is the matter?” Awusi closed her eyes, trying to hold back tears. “Ama, please… I need you to come to my house tomorrow. There is something important I want to discuss with you. It’s a business deal. Please don’t say no. Just come.” Ama was silent for a moment before answering. “Alright, I will come." Ama said.

"When she comes tomorrow, I will tell her to bear my husband a child." Awusi said.

To be continued.
