The Rejected Ring

Episode 11

Benjamin was finally free. His name was cleared. He walked out of the court that day with joy in his heart.

But the case did not end there.

The police decided they would not rest until they found the person who planted the Indian hem.p in Benjamin’s restaurant.

Inspector Musa, the officer in charge, spoke with his team.

“We must find the man who carried that nylon bag. We must also find the person who sent us the message that Benjamin sells hem.p. We cannot allow innocent people to suffer like this again.”

“Yes, sir,” the officers replied.

They began their investigation. They traced the phone number that sent the anonymous message. They contacted the network provider and requested details.

After a few days, the report came.

The number belonged to Evelyn.

Inspector Musa was shocked. “So, it is this woman that planned all this evil? And not just any woman — the ex-lover of Benjamin?”

He shook his head. “Love can truly turn into wickedness.”

The police moved quickly. They drove to Evelyn’s apartment one early morning.

When they knocked on the door, Evelyn came out, tying a wrapper. She was surprised to see policemen.

“Good morning officers,” she said with a fake smile. “What can I do for you?”

Inspector Musa looked at her directly. “Madam Evelyn, you are under arrest for framing Benjamin and giving false information to the police.”

Evelyn’s heart jumped. “What! Me? Arrest? For what? I don’t understand what you are saying.”

The inspector showed her the documents. “This is the record from the network provider. It was your phone number that sent the message to us. You told us Benjamin was selling Indian he.mp. And from our findings, you even paid somebody to plant the bag in his restaurant.”

Evelyn began to shake. “No… no… please… it was a mistake. I was angry. I did not mean for it to go this far.”

The inspector frowned. “Madam, you better save your words for the court. You will follow us to the station.”

The policemen grabbed her by the arm and dragged her into their van. Neighbors gathered outside, whispering.

“Ah! So Evelyn is the one behind Benjamin’s case?”

“She is wicked oh. How can she try to destroy him because he refused to marry her?”

“See how shame has caught her.”

Evelyn covered her face with her wrapper as the police van drove away.

At the station, she finally confessed.

“Yes, I did it,” she cried. “Benjamin used to be my boyfriend. We dated for eight years. He wanted to marry me but I refused because I thought he was poor. Later, when I saw he had money, he refused to take me back. I was angry. I didn’t want him to marry another woman. That is why I did it.”

Inspector Musa shook his head. “So because of jealousy, you wanted to send an innocent man to prison for life? You are heartless. The law will deal with you.”

The case was taken to court.

During the trial, Evelyn pleaded guilty. The judge looked at her with disappointment.

“Evelyn,” the judge said, “you wasted this court’s time with lies. You almost destroyed the life of an innocent man. This is wickedness of the highest order. You will serve six months in prison to learn a lesson.”

The hammer dropped. “Case closed!”

Evelyn screamed as warders dragged her away. She cried, but nobody pitied her. Even her family members were ashamed of her actions.

Meanwhile, Benjamin’s life took a new turn.

The day after his release, he went to his restaurant. The place had been closed by the police, but now it was opened again.

Benjamin’s loyal staff gathered around him. “Oga, welcome back! We thank God you are free. We never doubted you for one day.”

Benjamin smiled with tears in his eyes. “Thank you, my people. God bless all of you. You kept this place running even when I was in prison. From today, I promise you all, your salaries will increase.”

They shouted in joy.

Benjamin reopened the restaurant officially. Customers came back in large numbers. The news of his release spread around the estate. People who once suspected him now rushed to patronize him again.

“Benjamin is a good man,” one customer said. “We will continue to support his business.”

Apart from the restaurant, Benjamin also continued his supermarket. Money started flowing again. His life became even better than before.

Mary never left his side. She stood with him throughout the trial. She was the happiest when he was released.

One evening, Benjamin took Mary to the new house he had built.

He held her hand and said, “Mary, you are the reason I did not give up. When everybody was against me, you believed in me. I will never forget your love. Let us start our future together here.”

Mary smiled with tears in her eyes. “Benjamin, I love you with all my heart. No matter what happens, I will always stand by you.”

He hugged her tightly.

Soon, their wedding date was fixed again.

This time, nothing stopped it.

On the wedding day, the church was filled. Friends, family, and neighbors came. Even some of the people who once doubted Benjamin were present, clapping and celebrating him.

Benjamin wore a fine suit. Mary wore a beautiful white gown. They looked perfect together.

The pastor joined them as husband and wife.

“You may k.iss the bride,” the pastor said.

Benjamin k.issed Mary as the church erupted in joy.

The reception was grand. People ate and drank. Music played. Dancers entertained the guests.

Benjamin stood up to give a speech. He held Mary’s hand and faced the crowd.

“My brothers and sisters, I thank God for this day. The devil tried to destroy me, but God fought for me. I also thank my wife, Mary, for standing by me. Today, I am the happiest man alive. I promise to love her forever.”

The crowd clapped loudly.

That night, as Benjamin and Mary entered their new home as husband and wife, he whispered in her ears, “Finally, Mary, we are married. This is the beginning of our happiness.”
