Episode 9: Blind Justice

The plan to kidnap the young boy had turned into a nightmare for Julian Sterling. He had walked into a trap that was set by the smartest people in the city. For many years, Julian thought he was the one playing the game. He thought he was the cat and everyone else was a mouse. But on this cold and foggy morning, he realized that he was the mouse, and the trap had finally snapped shut on his tail.

The police did not move slowly. They moved with a level of force that Julian had never seen in his entire life. Usually, when the police saw Julian, they would smile and wave. They would open doors for him and call him "sir." But today, they did not care about his name. They did not care about his expensive shoes or his famous father. They moved like a giant wave of blue and black, swarming the van and pinning Julian to the ground.

One of the agents held a camera right in front of Julian’s face. "We have everything, Julian," the agent said. "We have your face on video. We have your fingerprints on the masks. And we have your voice."

Julian felt his heart sink into his shoes. He remembered the ransom call he had made just an hour ago. He had used a deep voice and a fake name, but the police had recorded every single word. They had machines that could prove it was him. In the old days, his father, the Senator, would have found that recording and burned it.

He would have paid the cameraman to lose the film. He would have made the evidence disappear like magic. But the Senator was gone, and there was no magic left in the Sterling name.

"You are hurting me!" Julian screamed as a young officer pulled his arms behind his back. "Stop it right now! Do you know who I am? Do you have any idea what will happen to you when my lawyers hear about this?"

The young officer did not look scared. He did not look worried at all. He just looked at Julian with a very calm face. He tightened the handcuffs until they bit into Julian’s skin.

"Yeah," the young officer replied. "I know exactly who you are. You are the guy who is going to jail. And you are the guy who is going to stay there for a very, very long time."

Julian tried to fight, but it was no use. The officers were strong and they were many. They lifted him up off the hard pavement and began to walk him toward a large black police van. This van did not have windows in the back. It was made of thick steel. It was a van for criminals.

As Julian was being led away, his mind was racing. He was looking for a way out. He was looking for someone to save him. He looked at the crowds of people who had gathered on the sidewalk to watch the arrest. He saw people from the neighborhood. He saw shopkeepers and students. He saw mothers holding their children’s hands.

And then, he saw her.

Julian stopped moving. For a moment, even the officers could not make him walk. He stared at a woman standing at the very edge of the sidewalk, right near the police van.

It was Martha.

Widow Martha was no longer in her prison cell. Because the Senator was dead and the truth about his bad deeds had come out, a new judge had looked at Martha’s case. They found out that she had been told lies in court. They found out that the evidence against her was fake. They had released her from prison just a few days ago. She was a free woman again.

Martha stood very tall. She was wearing a simple gray dress and a clean white scarf. She held her wooden walking stick in her right hand, but she was not leaning on it for support. She was holding it like a queen holds a scepter. Even though she was blind, she had her head held high. She was facing the direction of the police van, as if she could see exactly what was happening.

Julian felt a chill that was colder than the morning fog. He remembered the last time he saw Martha. It was in the courtroom. He had laughed at her. He had blown her a mock kiss because he knew she could not see his face. He had thought she was weak. He had thought she was nothing.

But standing there on the sidewalk, Martha did not look weak. She looked like the strongest person in the world. She did not have money or a Senator for a father, but she had the truth. And the truth had set her free, while Julian’s lies were locking him away.

Martha did not say a word. She did not have to shout. She did not have to point her finger. The way she stood there, with her head held high and her face toward the light, was the loudest thing Julian had ever heard. It was a silent message that said, "Justice has finally found you."

The officers pushed Julian toward the open doors of the van. He tried to look away from Martha, but he couldn't. He wanted to scream at her. He wanted to tell her that he was still better than her. But his voice was gone. All he could do was stare at the woman he had tried to destroy.

As the guards pushed him into the dark back of the van, the last thing Julian saw was Martha’s calm, peaceful face. She was not smiling at his pain, but she was not crying for him either. She was just there, a witness to the end of the Prince of Chaos.

The heavy steel doors of the van slammed shut. "CLANG!"

The sound echoed in the small space. It was the darkest place Julian had ever been. He sat on the hard metal bench and felt the van start to move. He was alone in the dark.

Outside, Martha turned her head slightly as she heard the van drive away. She took a deep breath of the fresh morning air. The air smelled like rain and freedom. She had lost her daughter, and she would never get those years in prison back. But she had kept her promise to Amina. She had not let the world forget.

Martha tapped her stick on the ground and began to walk. She walked with a steady step, her head still held high. She was going back to her small house at the end of the dusty road. She was going to water the orange trees. She was going to live her life in the light, while the boy with the golden watch started his long journey into the shadows.

The people on the sidewalk stood back to let Martha pass. They looked at her with respect. They knew that she was the one who had really won. The "Blind Justice" was no longer blind. It could see everything now.

How do you think Julian felt when he saw Martha standing there as a free woman?

Do you think Martha knew Julian was looking at her, even though she is blind?

Now that Julian is going to jail with so much evidence against him, do you think he will finally admit what he did to Amina?

What do you think will be Julian's biggest fear when he enters the prison?

The tables have completely turned! The prisoner is free, and the prince is in chains!
