Episode 5: Blind Justice

Time is a very strange thing. For some people, time moves very slowly, like a snail crawling across a leaf. For others, time flies by like a fast bird in the sky. In the cold and silent cells of the state prison, time felt like a heavy chain for Widow Martha. Every day was the same. She woke up to the sound of a loud bell. She ate thin soup that had no taste. She sat in the dark and counted the beats of her own heart. The days turned into weeks, the weeks turned into months, and the months turned into years.

But while Martha was locked away in the shadows, the world outside was changing. In the bright and noisy city, Julian Sterling was growing older, but he was not growing wiser. In fact, he was becoming much worse. Julian was no longer just a spoiled boy. He had become a man who thought he was a god. He believed that the sun rose and set just because he told it to. He believed that every person he met was just another toy to be played with and then thrown away.

Julian’s father, Senator Sterling, was now more powerful than ever before. He was no longer just a Senator. He was now running a big campaign to become the Vice President of the whole country. This meant that the Sterling name was on every billboard and every television screen. The Senator’s face was everywhere, smiling and promising to make the country a better place. But behind that smile, the Senator was still the same man who had burned a girl’s diary and sent a blind widow to jail.

He was a man who used money like a shield and power like a sword.

Because his father was so close to the top, Julian felt completely untouchable. He did not follow any rules at all. He spent his days in secret rooms where men played high-stakes gambling. He would bet more money on a single game of cards than a hundred families would spend on food in a year. He did not care if he won or lost because he knew his father’s bank account was like a bottomless well. He could always go back for more.

His nights were even wilder. Julian spent his nights in dark underground clubs where the music was so loud it made the walls shake. He drove fast cars through the city streets at midnight, ignoring the red lights and the speed limits. Many times, Julian would crash his expensive cars into walls or into other people’s property. Once, he even hit a young man on a bicycle and left him lying in the road.

But every time Julian did something bad, the same thing happened. A phone call would be made from the Sterling Mansion. A thick envelope of cash would be delivered to the right person. The police would look the other way. The news reporters would be told to stay quiet. The problem would simply vanish as if it had never happened. Julian would laugh and go out to buy a new car the very next day. He felt like he was living in a world where he was the only person who truly mattered.

However, there is an old saying that says the higher you climb, the harder you fall. Senator Sterling had climbed very high. To get to the top, he had stepped on many toes. He had crushed many people’s dreams. He had taken land from the poor and given it to the rich. He had made many enemies who were hiding in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to strike. While the Senator was busy making speeches about the Vice Presidency, dark clouds were beginning to gather over his beautiful golden life.

In the shadows of the city, people were

talking. They were tired of the Sterling family. They were tired of Julian’s crimes and the Senator’s lies. Some of these people were powerful too, and they were not afraid of the Senator’s checkbook. They were planning something, and the Sterling Mansion was no longer the safe fortress it used to be.

On a warm Tuesday night, Julian returned to the mansion very late. He was stumbling because he had been drinking all night at a club. His clothes were messy, and his golden watch was missing. He didn't care. He had probably lost it in a bet or given it to someone he met at the bar. He walked into the grand hall, not noticing that the house felt different. Usually, there were many guards walking around, but tonight, the hallway was very quiet.

Julian made his way up the stairs. He was laughing to himself about a joke he had heard earlier. He reached his bedroom, which was filled with expensive furniture and silk blankets. He didn't even take off his shoes. He just fell onto the bed and closed his eyes. Within minutes, he was passed out in a heavy, drunken stupor. He was dreaming of gold and fast cars. He thought he was the king of the world.

But the dream did not last long.

In the middle of the night, a terrible sound ripped through the silence of the mansion. It was a sharp, cracking sound that made the windows rattle.

"POP! POP! POP!"

Julian’s eyes flew open. His head was spinning, and his heart was racing. He didn't know where he was for a second. He looked around his dark room. The moon was shining through the window, casting long, scary shadows on the floor.

"What was that?" he whispered to himself.

He sat up and listened. For a moment, there was nothing but the sound of his own breathing. Then, it happened again. It was the sound of rapid gunfire. It was coming from downstairs. It was coming from the direction of his father’s study.

Julian felt a cold wave of fear wash over him. This was not supposed to happen. Gunfire was for the movies. Gunfire was for the poor parts of town. Gunfire did not happen in the Sterling Mansion.

He heard the sound of glass breaking. He heard the sound of heavy boots running on the marble floors. He heard a man’s voice shouting, but he couldn't understand the words. Then, he heard his father’s voice. It was a scream. It was the sound of a man who realized that his money and his power could not save him from the shadows.

Julian scrambled off the bed. He was shaking so hard he could barely stand. He moved toward his bedroom door, but he stopped before he touched the handle. He heard footsteps coming up the stairs. They were fast and heavy.

"Is anyone there?" Julian called out, but his voice was weak and thin.

The gunfire downstairs grew louder. It sounded like a war had started inside the house. The "pop-pop-pop" of the bullets was echoing through the hall, getting closer and closer to Julian’s room. He realized that the phone calls and the envelopes of cash were not going to help him tonight. The dark shadows he had ignored for so long were finally at his door.

Julian looked around for a place to hide, but his room felt like a cage. The prince who thought he was a god was now just a terrified boy in the dark. The silence of the night was gone, replaced by the violent sounds of a world that was tired of "Blind Justice."

Who do you think has entered the Sterling Mansion with guns? Is it a group of people the Senator hurt in the past?

Do you think Julian will try to fight back, or will he hide under his bed?

Where is the Police Commissioner now that the Senator actually needs help?

If something happens to the Senator, what will happen to Martha in prison?

The walls of the palace are falling down! The Prince of Chaos is awake, but his nightmare is just beginning.
