The Temptation Episode Ten
“We have to go to the hospital to confirm whether you are pregnant or not. If you are pregnant, we will have to abort the baby. I will not allow you to bear a child for my husband. You are a side chick and you want to take my husband by getting pregnant for him. There is no way I'm going to allow that to happen. I will make sure the pregnancy is terminated if you take a pregnancy test and we find out that my husband has planted a baby inside of you. If you accept the conditions, I will instruct the police to release you right now and I will drive you to the hospital for the test.” Afoma tells Doris.
“I'm already dying. I have not eaten properly for so many days. I'm very sick at the moment. My head is spinning as if I'm going to fall at any moment. I have lost all the strength in my body. If I don't leave this place soon, I'm sure I will die. Please, I don't want to die and I don't want to go to jail. But there is no need for you to take me to the hospital. I'm sure I'm not pregnant. There is no sign of pregnancy in my body. If I'm pregnant, I will know. Please, just tell them to release me and I will run away and leave this Lagos for you,” Doris said.
“If you will not go to the hospital, we can do the pregnancy test here. All you need to do is to give me your u'rine in a container. I will go outside and buy a pregnancy test strip and test it. Once I confirm that you are not pregnant, I will tell them to let you go. But you can't leave this police station without doing a pregnancy test. You stayed at the hotel with my husband for more than two weeks. That was enough time for him to get you pregnant. I will not take the risk of letting you go without first confirming that you are not carrying my husband's seed inside you,” Afoma said without emotion. She knew that the police officers have seriously dealt with Doris and that she would accept anything she said at that difficult moment. She paid the policemen well and they did the job for her perfectly. Most days, they allowed Doris to starve.
“Alright, go and bring a container, let me give you the ur'ine. I will do anything to make sure I leave this police cell today,” Doris said with tears in her eyes. Afoma meant business. She quickly rushed out of the police station, bought a bottle of water, emptied it and took the empty bottle back to Doris. Afoma also bought a pregnancy test strip, which she put in her handbag. She rushed back to the police station and handed the empty bottle to Doris.
“Take the bottle. But I will follow you to the toilet. I want to see when you are ur,inating. I don't want you to fetch water and bring to me. I don't trust you.” Afoma said. Two policemen came and opened the cell so Doris could go to the toilet to bring the ur'ine sample. Afoma quickly followed her.
“I will follow you. I will watch you closely.” Afoma said. She was not joking. She entered the toilet with Doris and watched her pour u'rine into the bottle. Afoma also conducted the pregnancy test in the toilet.
“Thank your God that you are not pregnant. I will tell them to release you but you must sign that you will never near Lagos again. You must sign that you will never come close to my husband again,” Afoma said.
“I accept everything you said. I will leave Lagos forever and never return. I will never come close to your husband again. Just tell the police to release me. They should not charge me to court as a kidnapper,” Doris begged.
“You are now free.” Afoma said. She went to the DPO's office and told him to let Doris go.
“She promised to leave my husband for me. She has also promised to disappear from Lagos. You people can release her. She has learned her lesson. I have forgiven her so far as she will never try to take my husband from me,” Afoma said to the police DPO. Doris was release immediately.
Doris went home, packed her things, and left Lagos as promised. She relocated to her village.
When Afoma got home that evening, she was hoping to meet her husband at home, but he was not there. She saw a letter Ndu wrote and dropped for her in the living room.
“Afoma,
I am writing this letter with a heart that is heavy and broken. Doris told me everything. She told me how you paid her to tempt me in the office, how everything was planned, and how I foolishly walked into it. I fell for the temptation. I will not lie or hide it. I was weak, and I allowed myself to be used. That single weakness has destroyed everything we built together.
You destroyed our marriage the moment you chose temptation over trust. You did not fight for us. You chose to set a trap instead. I may have fallen, but you pushed us into this darkness with your own hands. From today, you are no longer my wife. I cannot continue in a marriage that was poisoned this way. I cannot live in a house where love has turned into cruelty and revenge.
I have packed my things and left the house for you. I am not coming back. I want nothing from you, and I am not taking anything that belongs to you. Let the house, the memories, and everything inside it remain with you. I am walking away with only my conscience and the pain in my heart. This is the end of us.
Unfortunately, in the middle of all this, I fell in love with Doris. I did not plan it, but it happened. She has suffered enough, and I will not abandon her. I will look for her wherever she is. I will find her, and I will marry her. That is my decision, and I am at peace with it. Goodbye.”
“I destroyed my marriage myself,” Afoma said after reading the letter.
