He dropped it at Ms. Tomas' feet this time with no incident. She picked it up and tossed it again. Alex crawled as fast after it. Over and over they played this game until Alex was sweaty and panting.

She picked the ball up one last time and placed it on the table. Alex stare was on the ball but his training taught him not to take anything off the table. Those are for people and not pups.

Ms. Tomas rose from the chair and headed to the kitchen. “Follow,” she said as his attention missed the hand gesture. She smiled knowing that sometimes a pup could not help themselves. In the kitchen she opened the first cabinet and closed it, not finding what she was looking for. The second cabinet did have what she wanted. Turning the kitchen sink on, she filled the large bowl with water. Once three quarters filled she placed the bowl on the floor. “Drink pup.”

Alex placed his face into the bowl and started licking at the water. Small splashes popped up, getting in his face. As he drank, Ms. Tomas opened his refrigerator. She grabbed some cheese and ham and headed back into the living room. Sitting back in the large chair she waited for him to come back.

She got bored waiting and called out. “Oh pup, come her pup.” Alex pulled his face from the bowl. Making a mess as he did. Turning, he raced back to the living room. “There is my good pup. Come here and sit pretty.” Alex hurried to her side and moved easily into the practiced position. “I bet my pup is hungry. Do you want a snack?”

“Woof, woof.” His body straightened a bit more.

“Good pup. I have cheese,” she said, holding up a piece of yellow american cheese for him to see. His eyes looked at it hungrily. “Or a piece of ham.” Showing him the ham in her other hand. “Which should it be,” she asked as she teased the two pieces in front of him. Bringing one close to his mouth just to remove it and tease him with the other.

Alex tried to control himself but his puppy urges were getting the best of him. His mouth made a motion to grasp at the ham. Ms. Tomas was quick to pull it away. Over and over she moved the treats close to her pup only to remove it right before he took a bite. His frustration grew. He started to whine. She giggled as this,”sorry pet it was so much fun watching you try and steal the treat. Spin for me.” Alex moved back to all fours and did a quick spin for her. “Three more times.” And he did as told. As he was spinning Ms. Tomas ripped the ham and cheese into smaller pieces.

Alex finished his spins and was back to sitting pretty. “Catch,” Ms. Tomas tossed a piece of ham in the air. Alex moved his head under the falling ham and caught it. Some quick chews and he swallowed it. Next was a piece of cheese. This one he was not so lucky as the large piece flapped across his face. Landing to cover one eye. Without using his paws, he shifted the cheese to start gobbling it down. Ms. Tomas gave her pup treats like this until she tossed the last one. “All done my good pup. You did such a good job catching them all. Now let’s have some more playtime.”

Reaching over the side of the chair her hand grabbed the toy she placed there earlier when she got his snacks. Dangling the toy in front of him she urged him to bite down on it. Once firmly in his mouth she started to pull at it. Alex tightened his mouth, holding it firmly. Then he pulled back. As he did, he took her by surprise and pulled it free. He moved back a step and spun around once before bringing it back to his handler.

Ms. Tomas couldn’t stop that loud laughter of hers. The one that filled the room. “What a good pup you are,” she said as she scuffed the top of his head. Taking the toy again she started to pull at it again, this time with more force. To her surprise Alex started a playful growl and he pulled back. She enjoyed this so much.
