The Brave Hunter - Episode Six
Uche's dog has been seriously worried. The dog sat quietly outside the wooden prison where the farmer was kept. It was just as if he was there protecting the farmer. He looked at the farmer through the small space between the wooden stakes. The man was sitting on the floor, weak and tired. No one gave him food. No one gave him water. He has not eaten anything since the villagers brought him to Uche's village. The dog watched him and felt sad.
"Only if a dog can talk. I'm sure the dog is feeling pity for me." The farmer said in his heart.
It was as if Lucky understood everything that was going on. He knew the farmer did not kill Uche. He knew Uche was still alive. But Uche was also tied in the foreign village and had no hope. Lucky also knew that if he did nothing, the farmer would be killed soon. He couldn't talk, but he had to do something to help his friend.
Suddenly, the dog stood up and walked around the wooden cell. He looked closely at the wood that was used to build it. Then he started biting one of the thick stakes. The stick was strong, but Lucky didn't stop. He bit it with all his strength. When he got tired, he rested for some minutes and started biting again.
He did this over and over again. He bit the wood, rested, and came back to bite again. The sun was already going down, but the dog didn't stop. People passed by and didn't take him seriously. They thought he was just playing. But Lucky knew what he was doing.
"The dog wants to rescue me. How I wish he will succeed. I don't want to die. My wife and children are waiting for me." The farmer said.
After several hours of biting, something happened. One of the woods shook and made a cracking sound. Lucky became more serious. He used his teeth and pulled the wood with all his strength. The wood cracked again. This time, part of it broke. There was now a small opening in the part of the prison.
The farmer heard the sound and quickly crawled to the place. He looked at what the dog had done and was happy.
"Lucky, you did this?" He asked softly. The dog wagged its tail.
The farmer looked left and right. No one was watching. He pushed his head through the opening created by the dog. It was small, but he managed to squeeze his head out. Then his shoulder. Then slowly, the rest of his body. It was very hard, but he finally came out.
"I'm free like a bird." The farmer said.
"Let's go, Lucky. Before they catch us." The farmer said to the dog as they started running.
The dog led the way. They didn't take the main road. They entered the bush. They ran very fast. They didn't stop. The sky was getting dark. The road was rough. But they didn't stop to rest. The farmer was tired, but he kept running. Lucky ran in front, checking the way.
"I'm tired, but I have to keep running before the discover my escape." The farmer said.
After many hours, they finally reached the farmer's village. It was already night. The whole place was quiet. The farmer entered his compound with Lucky behind him. His wife was sitting outside. When she saw them, she jumped up.
"My husband! You are back! was worried!" She shouted.
The farmer hugged her. "I will explain everything later. I'm very tired and hungry."
His wife quickly went inside and brought out food. She gave some to her husband and gave the rest to Lucky. The dog ate well. The farmer also ate and drank water. They were both very hungry.
That night, the farmer and the dog slept well for the first time in many days. No one disturbed them. No one accused them. They were safe, at least for now.
The next morning, the farmer woke up early. He told his wife he was going out.
"I'm going to the palace. I need to see the princess." The farmer said. His wife was surprised.
"Why? What happened?"
"I want to ask her why she is keeping quiet. Someone risked his life to help her. Now that man is suffering and she has said nothing. Is she saying she is not aware that it was the hunter who saved her life from the kidnappers? | want to go and ask her. If no one wants to talk in this village, I will talk." The farmer said.
The farmer washed his face and wore clean clothes. Lucky the dog followed him.
The farmer went straight to the palace. When he got there, the palace guards stopped him.
"Who are you and what do you want?" One of them asked.
"I want to see the princess." The farmer said.
The guard looked at him from head to toe. "Why do you want to see her?"
"I need to speak with her. It's very important." He responded.
"She doesn't just talk to anybody. You must tell us your reason." The guards said.
"I will tell her myself. Please let me see her."
The farmer insisted.
The guards looked at each other. They whispered to themselves.
"Wait here," one of them said.
So the farmer stood at the palace gate, waiting to see the princess. He didn't know if she would come out or not. But he was ready to wait. He was tired of the silence. He wanted to know why the princess had not spoken. Why had she not told the people what really happened? Why was she allowing the man who helped her to suffer?
As the farmer waited, many questions ran through his mind. If the princess had come out to talk, the villagers would not have locked Uche up. Uche would not have been tied up in the cell. Everything would have been settled. But now, things were getting worse. He had to talk to her. Even if they refused him, he would not go back home without trying.
The sun was rising. Birds were singing. People were moving around. But the farmer stood quietly by the palace gate, waiting for the princess to come out.
"I'm not leaving this place until I see the princess." The farmer said.
