The First Lady Episode One

Leke was at home reading newspapers that evening. He was not really reading the newspapers, he was just checking the pages to see if he would see job vacancies that fit his CV. He has been jobless for more than six months and his family was suffering. He searched the newspaper from the first page to the last and he did not see any job he could apply for.

"I'm tired of searching. Maybe I should go back to the village and start farming. At least through the farm, I would have enough food to feed my family. This city is no longer favourable to me." Leke lamented as he dropped the newspaper on the table. Just then, his phone rang. He took the call.

"Good evening Leke. Do you know who is on the line? Can you still recognize my voice?" A female caller asked him. Leke searched his memory desperately, trying to recall who was talking but he could not remember. It's true that the voice sounded family but he failed to recall whose voice it was.

"I'm sorry, but I can't remember the voice. Please, kindly remind me who you are." Leke said tenderly.

"I'm Lola, your ex-girlfriend. So you have forgotten who I'm? How is it that you have forgotten my voice? This is not fair." Lola said angrily but jokingly.

"Wow! Lola! Nice to hear from you. I never knew I would get any calls from you ever since we broke up. Today is a great day for me. Your call is like rain falling during hamatan. How are you doing Lola? I know you must be great because you left me and married a rich man." Leke said. as he quickly remembered the pain he went through after Lola broke his heart many years ago.

"It was not my fault that I broke your heart. You know I'm a woman and time is usually short for us. You were not ready to get married and you had no money to maintain a family. That was why I had to leave you and marry the rich man that came my way. You are the one I actually love, but you know love does not put food on the table." Lola said teasingly.

"Well, I understand. I have already moved on.

I'm also married now and I have one child. Life has not been easy, but we are patching things." Leke said painfully.

"Well, that's why I'm calling you. First of all, I'm very happy to hear that you now have your own family. I know you need money and I know what you are passing through. I want to offer you a job. The man I got married to back then has been elected as the governor of my state and I'm now the first lady. I want to invite you to my state so that you can start working for me as my personal assistant. You will make so much money. The salary is N2 million per month. There are other benefits such as free house and a brand new car for you and your family. I will help you to get contracts worth billions of naira. If you are interested, I will send you flight money so that you and your family can relocate to my state where you will live henceforth." Lola said. The offer blew Leke off.

"Wow! So happy to hear that you are now a first lady. A wife to the governor! What a blessing! Congratulations Lola. As for your offer of a job to me, I will discuss it with my wife this evening and get back to you as soon as possible." Leke said.

"Alright! I will wait, but please, I want a quick reply latest tomorrow morning. If you fail to reply me in the morning, I will take it that you are not interested. I will look for another person. "Lola said as she dropped the call.

Later that night, Leke spoke to his wife, Kehinde about the enticing job offer.

"Do you think I should take the job? The job is good, it is an opportunity to work with the governor's wife. The salary and other benefits are also very tempting, but I'm afraid. I have to be frank with you. I don't want anything that will bring problem in our marriage." Leke tells Kehinde. They were in bed that night and they had just finished eating honey.

"Why are you thinking twice about this? Haven't

we suffered enough? You should have even

packed your bags and left as soon as she called

you for the job offer. Do you want her to give the

job to another person? You should take the job

immediately. As soon as I wake up in the

morning, I'm packing our bags to fly to that

state. Nothing will make us lose this opportunity

to work with the wife of the governor." Kehinde

tells her husband point blank. She was not

going to allow her husband miss any chance that could change their poverty-stricken life for the better. They hardly eat two times a day and all her clothes are old. Their only child is not evening going to school because they haven't been able to pay school fees.

"Are you sure you want me to take the job? Remember I told you the first lady is my ex- girlfriend. It is not difficult for old firewood to catch fire. I'm trying to avoid the situation where anything could start happening between me and her. Please, I don't want to take the job. She should look for another person." Leke tells his wife.

"No way! You are taking the job. If you can't take the job, I will look for another man and marry. I can't continue to stay here and suffer in poverty. This job will change our lives for the better. In fact, as I'm talking to you, I'm going to pack our things ready to move tomorrow morning." Kehinde said without mincing words.

"Alright! I will take the job, but if there are any consequences, I will not be the one to blame." Leke warned and slept off.

The next day, Leke and his family relocated to meet with the First Lady. As soon as they arrived in the state capital, they were taken to a brand new house she bought for them. They got a car and every good thing to make them happy and comfortable. After they settled down, Leke got a call from the First Lady.

"My driver is coming to pick you up." The First Lady said. Soon, a car entered the compound and Leke was driven to another home in the GRA.

"This is my secret house. I bought it for you and me. We will be meeting here every day to eat honey. I have missed your carrot. It used to be so good back then and I have been looking for an opportunity to be close to you again. My husband is a busy politician and he does not have time for me. Can you imagine that no man has touched me for the past six months? Even when he touches me, he does not have skills like you. Please, come to the bedroom with me. I'm all yours and I will pay you handsomely!" The First Lady said after Leke entered the living room of the secret house.
