IT WAS A MAN }

The unknown stranger let out a deep chuckle. “Scream all you want, honey. No one is gonna hear you.” He paused. “…or safe you.”

Sandra was walking down to a ward, going through a patient’s chart when she heard her name from behind, bringing her movement to a halt.

She turned around and sighted Marshall storming towards her with an angry expression on his face.

She groaned in irritation, rolling her eyes as she awaited his outburst.

“What did you do?” He asked through gritted teeth, shooting daggers at her through his eyes. “Answer me.”

“What are you talking about?” She feigned ignorance, crossing her arms over her chest.

“Don’t play this game with me, Sandra. I swear you are not going to like it. Why did you tell my wife those things?”

“Are you for real right now? You should be grateful to me that I didn’t involve the cops in this matter.”

“The cops?” He frowned. “I don’t understand. What do the cops have to do in this case?”

“Your wife poured pepper sauce in my eyes!” She whisper-yelled, pointing at her eyes that were still reddened and swollen. “She almost blinded me.”

“Who wouldn’t blind you after what you did in my office?”

“Excuse me? Are you trying to justify her actions?” She eyed him from head to toe.

“Stop making this conversation about my wife, woman. Besides, are you in any position to report a case to the cops?”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“Oh, honey. Trust me, you wouldn’t want me to explain that out here in the hallway.” He responded.

Sandra understood him immediately after he said those last words.

She bites her bottom lip, balling her fist in agitation as she likewise glared at Marshall, thinking of many ways to kill him.

He would definitely threaten her with her damn secret. She knows that for sure. She f**king made a mistake in starting this fight she won’t be able to finish.

However, one thing is certain, she wasn’t going to back down from the fight.

“Why did you do that?” He asked in a calm voice when he realized that he has the upper hand now.

“Is that even a question?” She retorted.

“It is. Answer.”

She hesitated. “You hurt me, Marshall. Did you know how heartbroken I felt when I found out that you were married to another woman? You betrayed my love and trust for you! You even tried to break up with me. And you know, I thought over your harsh words to me that day in your office and it made me ponder and question myself…” She paused. “Have you ever been truthful to me while we make love in bed?”

Marshall was quiet.

“You claim to love your wife but do I need to remind you that at a point you claimed to love me too.” She said.

“I thought you said you don’t love me?” He asked.

“I said all of those things because I don’t want you to feel like I am obsessed with you.” She told him. “I get it. I was wrong. I should never have spoken to your wife like that but guess what? I don’t regret anything.”

“You don’t regret anything?” He repeated, stepping closer to her. “Do you know what you’ve done? Because of you, my beautiful marriage might come to an end. And you say you have no regret? Are you being serious?”

“What about me?” She asked, refusing to back away. “Doesn’t my heart, feelings, or emotion matter as well?”

“Sandra, we could have still been together if you didn’t spew those rubbish in the office earlier ago in front of my wife.”

“I don’t want to be the other woman in your life, Marshall.” She sighed. “I don’t want to be in a secret relationship with you. Look, everyone in the hospital is pointing their fingers at me, calling me a home wrecker. They see you and your wife as the victim while I am the villain, fighting against your happy home with your wife.” She shook her head. “I am also a victim here.”

“Sandra_”

“David’s father was a jerk,” She said, cutting him off. “But I don’t blame him and you know why?” She looked into his eyes. “He wasn’t married to another woman and besides, we both agreed on just s3x and he owes me no commitment. Come to think of it, he doesn’t even know that he has a son with me. But as for you, you know about my insecurities. You know how I got hurt in the past after David’s father left me. You know about how I promised myself never to fall in love with any other man. You know but what did you still do, huh?”

“You are hurt and I’m sorry for being the reason. But you have to grant me this favor,”

She creased her brows together, staring at him.

“What?”

“Go to my wife and tell her that you lied and that_”

“You should be ashamed of yourself, Marshall.” She cut him off angrily. “I should go to your wife and tell her what? So wait, you want me to amend the problems in your marriage and then be the one who loses at the end of the game?” She chuckled, shaking her head in disagreement. “Never. I will hurt you just as much as you did to me. This is just the beginning and now, if you will excuse me.” She turned to leave but Marshall stopped her once again.

“You are right.” He smirked. “This is just the beginning. And oh, just a reminder, two can play this game, honey. The fire you’ve ignited, be ready to get burned.”

“Are you threatening me?” She asked.

“Threatening you?” He chuckled and shook his head. “Of course not. This is me telling you to always watch your back because, by the time I do what I have in mind, the cops will be paying you a visit.”

Abby stepped out of the lab and walked towards Ginny who was busy taking photos of herself.

“Hey,” Abby waved in the air, grabbing the attention of the intern.

“Oh, you are here.” Ginny put her phone aside. “I have been waiting for you for thirty minutes if I’m not mistaken.”

“You are mistaken.”

Ginny frowned upon hearing that. “What?”

“You waited for twenty-five minutes and not thirty.” Abby corrected.

“Oh.”

“Anyway, I’ve submitted the blood, urine, and saliva sample, the doctors will carry out the test and the result will be out… Unfailingly by tomorrow.”

“Why not today?”

“Because it’s a whole lot of work, that’s why.” She simply replied. “And besides, if they don’t take their time, they might miss spotting out the poison. But that is if Minty really died from thallium poison.”

“Hmm. Okay. I should get going then?”

Abby nodded her head. “Yes. I will see if they’ve started running the test before leaving as well.”

Ginny nodded her head in understanding and left while Abby went back into the lab.

A few minutes later, she walked out of the lab and left the morgue.

Tessa was seated on a black couch on the balcony, scrolling through images of her brother.

She heard the sound of the bedroom door clicking and then footsteps but didn’t bother to turn around to see who it was. Because obviously, it could be only one person who lives in the same house with her. In fact, he owns the house.

“Babe,” Richard called from behind, leaning against the doorframe that led to the balcony.

“Hmm.” She hummed in reply.

“What are you doing?” He asked as he crossed his arms over his chest, watching her closely.

She shrugged. “Nothing serious. Just…” Her voice trailed off.

Richard pushed himself off the doorframe and stepped into the balcony, standing behind her now.

“Just what?” He urged, looking over her shoulder to see what has had her captivated and lost like this. A frown appeared on his face when he saw what she was gazing at. “Are you kidding me?” He snatched the phone from her hand.

Tessa groaned, turning around to face him.

“What are you doing?” She asked.

“I should be the one asking you that. What are you doing?” He said, going through the images as well.

“Give me back my phone,” She stretched out her palm, indicating that he drop her phone there.

“No.” He shook his head, hiding the phone behind himself. “Why are you going through Robert’s photos?”

“Because he is my brother and I miss him. That isn’t a crime, right?” She said.

“Babe, you need to stop this.”

“Stop what?”

“Stop trying to guilt trip yourself. I know that’s exactly what you are doing as you go through his images.” He stated.

She bites her bottom lip, verifying his words.

Richard let out a deep sigh of frustration and dropped her phone inside his pocket and reached out to hold her hands.

“You have been blaming yourself all these years. You can’t continue like this, Tessa.”

“I… I can’t help it, Richard.” She gasped, tears rolling down her face. She has been holding back the tears since she started going through her brother’s Instagram photos. “I am the cause of the hate Robert has for me. I… I…”

“You were young and didn’t know what you were saying then. You blamed your brother because it felt like the right thing to do. I am not saying you were right and neither am I trying to justify what you did but it’s all in the past now. If we keep dwelling in the past, how can we move forward?”

Tessa lowered her gaze as she shook her head.

“I can’t move on from the past until Robert forgives me.” She mumbled.

“You’ve asked for forgiveness countless times. I even tried to talk sense into him but he wouldn’t listen. he doesn’t listen to anybody.” Richard huffed.

“Richard,” She lifted her gaze to look at him. “If you were in Robert’s shoes, would you have forgiven me easily? Please be honest with your answer.”

Richard opened his mouth to talk but no words left them.

“Tell me, would you?” She pressed on, urging him for an answer as she used her eyes to search his face for an answer.

Richard pressed his lips together in a straight flat line, caressing her arms gently.

Tessa sniffled, nodding her head continuously.

He couldn’t say anything but she knows what his answer was.

She took a step back from him and puffed out a deep breath, running her fingers through her hair.

“I know you love me,” She began. “But you shouldn’t forget about the friendship you share with Robert. You should be neutral in this case between my brother and me and support the right person. Robert and I mean so much to you and I know you don’t want to lose either of us but trust me, I won’t hate you for being honest and siding who is right. To be frank, it is what I expect of you. I want your sincerity, right now, Richard. Not your love.” She told him.

He hesitated, thinking about her words over and over again in his head before saying, “Robert went through a lot while growing up after the death of you both parents. Honestly, I was pretty mad at you for how you mistreated him and made his classmates tag him as a murderer. It really wasn’t funny. However, looking at it from your perspective, you must have been hurt as well and you wanted to vent out your anger on somebody. Robert was the easier target.” He cupped her face, looking deeply into her eyes. “You were both hurt. Because I’m sure you didn’t have the best childhood either.”

“I didn’t.” She shook her head. “Robert and I have been close right from the moment I was told that I have a baby brother,” She smiled as if reminiscing about the moment. “We did almost everything together to the point that most people tagged us as twins. What am I even saying? You know this story already.” She paused, the smile that was once on her face varnished. “But after the tragedy that happened, I pushed him away and sincerely, it felt like I lost a part of me.” Her lips trembled and more tears streamed down her face. “I love my brother so much and I hate myself for treating him badly and I hate myself even more because I don’t know the choice I will make if we go back in time.” She sobbed.

Richard wiped off her tears with his thumb finger and pressed a gentle kiss on her forehead.
