UNEDITED_ EXPECT ERRORS

“I can’t implicate myself.” He said to himself as he deleted the video from his phone. “The truth must remain buried.”
______

“What truth?” A voice asked from behind, interrupting him.

Jersey jumped in fright, least expecting to hear his mother’s sudden voice.

“What the hell, mom? You scared me.” He hissed, dropping his phone inside his pocket.

“That wasn’t my intention. I’m sorry.” She apologized. “But what truth were you talking about? What should remain buried?”

Jersey sighed and shook his head.

“Not important. Just thinking out loud. You don’t have to worry about it.”

“Jersey,” She called out in a stern and emotionless voice.

“Yes?” He answered.

“Are you hiding something from us?”

“What?”

“Are you hiding something from us?” She repeated, giving him a pointed look.

“I heard you the first time.” He claimed. “But why will you even ask me that?”

She shrugged.

“I don’t know. You left me no other choice, you know.” She stated. “You refused to tell anyone your reason for hating on Marshall, your sister’s husband.”

“You came out here because of that, didn’t you?”

“Your father told me you refused to tell him anything. You claimed not to hate your brother-in-law but believe me, your attitude towards him is saying otherwise.” She said.

Jersey pinched the bridge of his nose, moving his suit jacket hung in his right arm to the left.

“That’s my business, Mom. And I choose to keep quiet about it if I want. I told you and Father already, that my suspicion against Marshall is simply because I don’t trust him. Not because I hate him.” He explained.

“Jersey_”

“Mother,” He cut her off immediately. “I know you are worried about Felicia and me. I am also worried about the unhealthy relationship I share with my sister but you know, life usually goes opposite the way we want it to. I don’t just trust Marshall. Okay?”

“Why?” She questioned.

Jersey groaned at the back of his throat, getting frustrated.

“Please not this question again. I have to leave for work right now, Mother.” He started walking towards his black Benz, parked in the garage.

“Hmm.” Mrs. Hart hummed, watching her son. “I just hope you are not hiding something very important from your father and me, Jersey. Because it will hurt so much if that happens to be the case.”

“I am not hiding anything, Mother. When did this distrust start?” He didn’t wait for her answer as he opened the car and hopped in. “See you when I return. Bye.” He turned on the ignition and drove out of the compound.

•••••

“Where exactly are we heading to?” Robert asked in a whisper, surveying the hallway.

“The janitor’s closet, of course.” Emma answered.

“Do you know where that is located at?”

“Unfortunately, no.”

“What? You didn’t ask your best friend?”

“I didn’t even tell her about the undercover mission commencing today.” She sighed, glancing over at her partner to catch him giving her one of his looks of displeasing. “Don’t give me that look, Rob.”

“This is f**ked up. What if we get caught snooping around like this? We can’t call attention to ourselves, Emma.”

“You think I don’t know that already?” She scoffed. “Come to think of it,” She stopped walking and so did Robert. “Why are you scolding me?”

“What?”

“You should have done your research as well, why didn’t you?”

“I… well, that’s because I thought you were going to ask your best friend who works here in the hospital.” He responded.

“That’s a lame excuse.”

“Listen, instead of lamenting here like this, we should keep looking around for the janitor’s closet or maybe ask someone around. We have to change our clothes so we can blend in.” Robert said.

“I know that already. Dammit!” She snarled. “Let’s just go.”

“Wait, how about you text Abby right now and ask for the janitor’s closet? It’s faster that way and easier.”

Emma nodded in agreement, pulling her phone out of her pocket.

“That’s a good idea. You should have brought that up earlier instead of complaining.”

“Whatever. Hurry_” His words got stuck up in his throat when he sighted an elderly man walking towards them with a bucket and mop. “Oh, shoot.”

“What is it?” Emma looked up from her phone and also saw the man, her eyes budged open as she took in her attire and that of her partner.

Robert and her were still in their detective clothes.

“Fk, fk, f**k!” They cursed, searching around for a place to hide but too bad, there were no secretive places in a damn hallway.

“This is your fault.” Emma accused.

“My fault? How?”

“You should have brought up the idea about texting my friend in the first place, you blockhead.”

“Are you kidding me? Why didn’t you think of it instead? I mean, she’s your friend and not mine.” He retorted.

“I… I have a lot of things in my head, you can’t blame me.”

“But you can blame me. Is that it?”

“What is going on here?” The man asked as he eventually got to where Robert and Emma were standing like lost puppies.

“Hi.” Emma greeted, giving the man a small wave of her hand.

He gave her a weird look, moving his gaze to Robert.

“Who are you?” He asked.

“Who are we?” Robert repeated, smiling awkwardly as he turned to face his partner. “Who are we?”

“Who are we?” Emma reiterated, smiling awkwardly as well. “We are… janitors.”

They both started laughing while the man stood in front of them with a scowl on his face.

When they noticed the hard look on the man’s face, they instantly stopped laughing and cleared up their throats, avoiding his piercing dark eyes.

“I would have thought of the both of you as patients if this was a psychiatric hospital but it isn’t. So tell me who you are. Did you lose your way? Are you here to see a family member?” He queried.

“Uhm, we are actually janitors.” Emma said in a serious tone, sliding her phone into her trouser’s back pocket.

“Janitors?” He repeated, taking in their appearance, especially their clothes as he raised a questioning brow, looking a little bit confused. “Dressed like this?”

“Uh, ignore our dressing, sir. We are like this because we uhm…” Emma’s voice trailed off as she was out of lie to tell.

“Is it bad?” Robert asked, coming for his partner’s rescue.

The man gave them a blank look.

“Janitors don’t dress like this.” He noted.

“Oh, really? We thought if we dressed corporate, we will look presentable.” Robert said.

“Janitors don’t need to dress heaven and heart to look presentable. Just trousers and a shirt is fine.” He told them.

“We are sorry for looking too dressy. We are just desperate to get the job.”

“Hmm. What are your names?” He asked.

“Ginny,” Emma blurted out before she could stop herself.

Robert snapped his gaze to look at her, giving her the ‘what the f**k?’ look.

Emma slightly shrugged, returning his stare with a ‘What? It just fell off my mouth’ look.

“You are Ginny,” The man turned to face Robert. “What about you?”

‘Forgive me, buddy.’ Robert thought to himself as he opened his mouth to answer the man’s question.

“Richard.”

“Ginny and Richard…” The man let out a soft breath. “I am Ethan, by the way, and I am the one in charge of the Janitor’s department. Anyway, come with me, I can see you both don’t know where to go.” He walked past them and walked down the hall while Robert and Emma aka Ginny and Richard followed him from behind in silence.

••••

“So,” He began, sitting down on an armchair while Robert and Emma stood in front of him with their hands behind them. “You want to work here?”

“Yes, sir.” They answered.

“Why?”

“Sir?”

He cleared his throat.

“Why do you want to work as a janitor in Santos Hospital? There should be a reason, shouldn’t there?”

“Really?”

Emma and Robert exchanged glances. They didn’t think of answers to give when being asked questions like this.

“I am waiting for your answers. Why do you want to work here, Ginny?” He asked, facing Emma directly which means that he was expecting a reply from her.

Emma swallowed nothing, fiddling with her fingers.

“Because… I love…” She shook her head. “No, I don’t love Janitors. I just want to look for a means of sustainment while I search for a better job that suits my knowledge.”

“Are you trying to say being a janitor doesn’t suit you?” Ethan questioned.

Emma hesitated before answering.

“Uhm… yes? Maybe?”

“So does it suit me then?”

“What?”

“If being a janitor doesn’t suit you that means there are some people it suits, isn’t that what you meant?”

‘F**k, not a great answer. Good job of being stupid, Emma.’ She scolded herself.

“I’m sorry if that was how I sounded.” She bites her lower lip. “What I meant to say is that_”

“You are right, though.” He interrupted her.

Emma pinched her brows together, confused.

“I am?”

“Yes. You are both young and capable and obviously can’t work the rest of your lives being janitors. You are graduates and your family must be expecting more from the both of you.” Ironically. “Me, on the other hand, I am old and I’ve passed the age of going about in search of a good job.” He smiled. “You’ve passed my question, Ginny and I love forward to working with you.”

“Oh, my God.” Emma squealed. “Thank you, sir. I really appreciate it.”

He waved her off.

“You’re welcome, dear.” He moved his gaze to Robert now. “Do you have another convincing answer to give, Richard?”

Robert thought for a while.

“Janitors are amazing,” He began, grabbing everyone’s attention. “They make dirty things turn new and clean again. It is as if they’ve got magic hands and_”

“Enough.” Emma suddenly said.

Both Ethan and Robert glanced at her.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I wasn’t talking to you,” She said to Robert, cleaning her ear with her pinky finger. “My ear is itching. I think there are flies in this room.” She waved her hand in the air as if shooing off a housefly.

Robert knew she was lying and was actually talking to him.

Emma forced a smile to her face as she gazed at him.

“I’m sorry, you can continue talking.”

“As I was saying…”

“I think you should stop talking.” Ethan cut him off.

“Thank God. My ears were almost bleeding.” Emma mumbled under her breath but it was loud enough for them to hear her.

“Flattering Janitors… nice move but stupid.” Ethan stated. “Your answer wasn’t convincing but because we need extra hands, I am going to give you the job.”

“Thank you.” Robert breathed out with a smile.

Ethan stood up and walked towards a wardrobe by the corners of the room, he pulled out two uniforms which consisted of navy blue trousers with dibs, and a black long-sleeved shirt with soft-type black shoes and a black face cap.

“There are your uniforms,” He handed them over to them, each. “You can begin work today. Get changed and meet me out in the hallway so that I can assign you to your first cleaning area.”

“Okay, sir.” They answered.

“Sir,” Emma caught his attention. “I’m sorry, but I will like to ask you a question.”

“Don’t call me Sir. My name is Ethan.” He corrected. “Anyway, what’s your question?”

“Okay. Where are the other janitors? Or are you the only one working here?”

“Is that even possible? How can I be the only one to clean up this huge and influential hospital?”

“Makes sense. I admit, that was a dumb question to ask.” Emma murmured, face-palming herself.

“Others are busy working but I will introduce you to them during lunchtime which will be in thirty minutes. Hurry up and get changed. I will be waiting for you.” He stepped out of the closet, leaving Emma and Robert all alone.

“Ginny? Are you kidding me?”

“I didn’t know what else to think of. What about you? How did you think of a name so fast?”

“Richard is actually the name of my best friend.”

“Wow. Just wow.”

•••••

“I saw Dr. Sandra, she was crying while walking down to her office. Did something happen?” Thelma asked.

“When did you start worrying about her?” Marshall queried, giving the nurse a pointed look.

She chuckled softly.

“We are all partners, aren’t we?”

“Sure.” He leaned back into his seat. “Sandra told me what happened between the both of you. You know, I didn’t expect that from you.”

“I was only kidding with her. Don’t tell me she took it seriously.” She smirked.

“Joking with something like that isn’t funny, Thelma. Anyone could be listening to our conversations. We need to be extra careful with the things we say.”

“I’ve heard.” She paused. “Dr. Abby asked me to meet up with her before my shift ends.”

“Why?”

“She didn’t say.”

Marshall creased his brows, thinking things over.

“What are you thinking about?” Thelma asked, watching him closely.

He shook his head.

“Nothing serious. I can’t think of anything sensible that she wants to talk to you about but either way, you need to be careful when conversing with her. Is that clear?” He said.

“Yeah, I know.” Thelma rose to her feet. “I just came to inform you this so you would know that I am always on your side, Marshall. And I will never betray you unless you betray me first.” She winked at him and stormed out of the office.

“I just hope you can be trusted, Thelma. I really hope.”

≤!≥ I never asked you to harm anyone for my sake. You chose to do it. So don’t blame me for anything ≤!≥

Sandra screamed and knocked down everything on the brown desk to the floor.

She was beyond angry, agitated, and heartbroken.

How could he say those mean words to her?

How could he hurt her this way without having a second thought?

She thought he was in love with her.

She thought they will be together forever.

She thought a day will come when he will go down on one knee and ask her to be his forever deal.

He lied to her.

He played her like she was a f**king game.

Sandra palmed the desk, hanging her head low as uncontrollable tears streamed down her face.

≤!≥ You’re right, it’s time I become faithful to my wife ≤!≥

“Faithful?” She scoffed. “We shall see.”

••••

Abby stepped out and shut the door behind her, holding two takeout cups of coffee close to her chest.

She walked the distance to the bench and saw her boss seated there with his hands buried inside his hair and his face lowered.

He seemed to be in a deep thought.

“Sir,” She called out softly, stepping closer to him.

There was no response from him.

“Boss…” She called out again, a little bit louder this time around.

Still, no answer.

She dropped the cups on the bench and patted him on his shoulder.

“Geez,” Jersey snapped his head up and caught sight of Abigail. “Shit. You scared me.”

“Sorry. Are you okay?” She asked, sitting down beside him on the bench.

He ruffled his hair.

“Honestly, not really.”

Abby grabbed the cups of coffee from the bench and handed one over to him.

“I brought you coffee,” She said.

“Thank you.” He collected it from her and took a sip. “Black coffee,”

“I’m sorry if you don’t like_”

“It’s exactly what I needed.” He cut her off. “Thank you.”

“You don’t have to keep thanking me.”

He smiled.

“And you don’t have to keep calling me boss or sir.”

“You are my boss.” She reminded him.

“I thought I was your friend. I mean, we even went on a date together.”

Abby giggled.

“Hey, it wasn’t a date.”

“I’m glad to see you laugh like this. It’s been a while.”

“I know.” She sighed, taking a small gulp of her own coffee. “Tara’s death really affected me.”

“I know that.”

“What are you doing here?” She asked him.

He shrugged. “Inside was suffocating and I needed fresh air. What about you?”

“The same reason.”

It was silent between them for a few minutes.

“I did something really bad.” He whispered.

“What are you talking about?” She glanced at him.

Jersey returned her stare, both looking into each other’s eyes.

A thicker silence lingered in the air for another few seconds.

“But I don’t regret it.” He added, moving his eyes to her full pink lips. “I don’t regret it at all…”

“What… what are you talk_”

He slammed his lips on hers, cutting her off from whatever she was going to say.

Abby’s eyes went wide but she didn’t pull away nor did she respond to the kiss.
