ZACHARY'S POV

Sigh...

I lay on my bed. I've been laying here from morning till now. 1pm. And I've been doing nothing.

The emptiness in my room felt so strange. It made me crave for Dalanie even more.

Sigh...

Yesterday's talk with Kora. It was unexpectedly cut short by Alex and Dal.

"Kristen's on Kora's side now? But Kora's good. Unless Dal means that Kristen is under Francesca's wing," I talked to the ceiling, as if waiting for a reply.

There was none. Of course. So I continued the one-way conversation.

"Damn, that Kristen isn't anything good! First, she coerced me into sleeping with Francesca. Now she betrayed Dal?! She's no better than me!"

"Zac? Why're you talking to yourself?" Oscar walked straight in as usual without knocking.

"Oscar, you are supposed to knock."

"It doesn't matter. You're my brother," he waved his hand. "So anyway, I heard stuff. And boy, do we need to talk."

My heart dropped. That's the one line that makes you remember every single bad thing you've done in your whole life.

"Y-yes?" I tried not to look nervous.

"Alexander is now with Dalanie," he struggled to get up onto my bed.

He's 8. How can he have problems getting up a bed?

"Don't look at me like that, Zachary."

"I'm not looking," I turned away. "And yes, Alex and Dal are together. There's nothing I can do. I've lost her. Made a grave mistake. You wouldn't get it."

"I'm 8. I wouldn't get it, of course. But I don't have to. All I know is that you have to apologise. At the very least."

I looked at him and shrugged. Oscar may be 8, but I think he was some wise ass dude in his past life. But he always acts like an innocent kiddo in front of people.

"I have. She didn't reply. Today I was talking to Kora about how to get her back. Alex and Dal saw us and Dal started getting all worked up. I'm scared to approach her again."

"Then don't. You've apologised. That's all that's required. Don't think too much. If Dalanie moved on, so must you," he slid off the side of my bed and walked over to my study table. "Alright now, I need to borrow a pencil."

I nodded and he took one and left.

Os had a point. I needed to move on. But if Alex leaves her, I'm taking over.

"Still doing kick flips?"

I turned around to see Damon standing behind, hands in his shorts pocket.

"You have eyes," I said, continuing to kick flip flawlessly.

"Good to see you're practicing for the skateboarding competition. After what happened last year when we missed our snowboarding competition," he nodded.

"Don't get me started," I groaned.

"Yeah, yeah. I won't. Look bro, as much as you hurt Dalanie, we actually forgive you. The others just can't say it. But I think you really ought to stop playing with girls after this incident. We hoped you've changed."

Hearing Damon's words, I suddenly felt so small on the inside. I stopped kick-flipping. "You guys... what?"

"You heard the man," Damon turned and started to leave.

"Wait!" I ran after him and gripped his shoulder. "Thank you."

He shrugged and walked off.

Well, there's a burden in my heart that's lifted. I walk over to my skateboard calmly.

I'm moving on.

Back at home, I was getting started on some project. Yeah, I don't usually do projects but this is to help distract me.

I picked up my pen and started jotting down notes, but my phone buzzed. Sighing, I picked it up. It wasn't everyday that I had a 5 minute motivation to do work, ya know.

Text from Kael

Hey man, free now? Wanna prank some people at a store?

Wow... they really forgave me. And I guess, projects can be done later. Yeah, I know I need a cure for procrastination.

Zachary: Alright. Details?

Kael: West Mall supermarket. ASAP.

Zachary: See you.

I grabbed a brown leather jacket and put on some black boots. Then I got my bright yellow Porsche convertible on the road and zoomed off.

When I reached the mall, Kael, Damon, Alexa and... Alex... were waiting there for me.

"Alright. Now here's a plan. Damon and I will go and shake the soda bottles. Kael will put itching powder on the trolley and basket handles. Alex and Zac will dump embarrassing things into people's baskets and trolleys without them knowing. That way, they'd be stuck in an awkward situation at the cashier's and also, probably end up having to pay more," Alexa instructed. "Heh heh. Just like the old days. Anyway, questions?"

I raised up my hand meekly. "Could I not be with Alex?"

"No, you have to be. You can't go without talking to him forever! We're all childhood friends!" Damon argued.

I sighed but Alex just looked at me quietly. His eyes seemed to say 'hey bro, I won't kill you'.

Kael ran a hand through his hair and nodded at me encouragingly. I nodded back and we all stealthily ran away with the items we needed.

•~•

"Mummy, why are my hands so itchy?" a little boy's voice was heard.

"Let me see," his mum replied. After a while, the mum exclaimed, "Argh!! Why are my hands so itchy now?! We could be contracting some disease!!"

Around the corner of the next aisle, I could visibly see Kael sniggering at the duo.

I gestured for him to hide and he did so. Then I turned around to see Alex dropping a packet of condoms into a basket that was left unattended by a middle-aged woman.

We gave each other the thumbs up sign and grabbed another packet of condoms and hid it in our pockets, waiting for some other suitable person to drop it in. A lady's handbag would actually be good. Think of all the consequences... mmm... tempting...

As we walked nearer to the exits of the supermarket, a man who was standing outside of it opened up a coke bottle.

Much to his surprise, lots and lots of coke spilled out from the mouth, causing the man to jump back in fright. "Ahhhh!"

Laughs and a high-five was heard about two aisles down. Damon and Alexa did a great job.

Now it all comes down to Alex and I.

The basket that we dropped a packet of condoms in was carried up by the middle-aged lady we targeted.

"Sorry, Madame," Alex stifled a laugh. I was about to let out a snort but managed to hold it back.

Not long after unloading the groceries, the lady shrieked in embarrassment. "I didn't get these!"

In her hands was the packet of Durex 'Playful'. Everyone around her was laughing so badly, her face was red like a tomato.

At that time, the five of us gathered together and laughed the hardest laugh we had in so long.

With much gusto, we purposely walked out the supermarket through the entrance.

"Stop right there, kids!" a gruff voice shouted. "I saw what you did! And it's not nice!"

Uh oh. Rule #1: Never mind who's voice that belongs to! Just run!

"Spilt up," I yelled, and we broke up into two separate escalators. One group went up and the other went down.

After we split, with Kael and Damon going up and the twins and I running down, we found that the man chose to chase my group.

Geez. Stupid stubborn man. I guess being middle-age just f*cks you up like that.

Anyway, during the run, I whipped out my phone and texted the group while running.

Zachary: Meet outside.

Kael: Damon and I are on the way.

Alright. Now to rid this man and get the heck outta here!

The three of us sped up and knocked over boxes of filled stuff that was stacked outside a shop.

We didn't bother to know what the content was, but got really flustered after hearing fragile crashes come from inside the boxes.

Uh oh.

Yet, the man was still hot on our tails so we continued running. I think the owner of that shop shouted at him to pay for the losses.

Well, at least that was what made the persistent man stop chasing us, but not before glaring over at our direction.

Hey, it's not our fault that he refused to give up!

"You guys alright?" Damon immediately asked when we met outside.

"We're fine, Alex panted. "But on a more serious note, the mall manager should be out soon! Let's just go home."

"I agree," Kael nodded.

"Home it is, then. We'd probably need to take another one month or so of rest before resuming with our mischief anyway," I shrugged casually.

We did this pretty often. I'll admit it got boring for me.

"Okay, sounds good. See you all tomorrow, then," Alexa waved at us before grabbing her brother's arm and dragging him towards their bikes.

Damon and Kael bid farewell as they parted ways, each going to their cars.

I, on the other hand, got in my Porsche and left for the beach instead of home.

The beach was a good place to clear my mind and that was what I needed most. Still not that over Dal yet.

As I parked my car and walked down the boardwalk, I passed by an ice cream store that had a note outside saying:

Help wanted!

• Walk-in interviews accepted •

- At least 15 years of age?

- Need to refresh your mind?

- Would like to earn some extra pocket money?

- Want to experience a real job?

Look no more! Seaside Ice Cream is now hiring, so feel free to step right up if you are interested!

The 'Need to refresh your mind?' part was the most prominent point of all.

"Alright," I thought aloud while taking a deep breath and stepping into the shop. "This job is for me."
