"Yoohoo Da-moan," I cheered, peering in the room.

"Hey Dal-looney! Great to see ya!"

"You seem in great condition!" Kristen cheered too.

"I'm feeling much better after surgery."

"That's good to hear!" Hopefully you'll be discharged in a week?"

"Yeah, I hope so too."

"Can't miss the first day of school, now can you?" I snickered.

"First day of school? Isn't today your first day of school?" a puzzled-looking Kristen asked.

"Oh. You don't know yet?" Damon replied.

"Know what?"

"Zac, Kael and I are going over to your school next week."

"What?! Since when?! And how come Dal knows but I don't?!"

I shrugged, stifling my laughter.

"Maybe you should've told her," Damon was smiling.

"Ayy, anyway, sooner or later she'd find out."

"But that's so cool omg! Life will be so fun!" Kris jumped up and down, unable to contain her excitement.

"If," I cut in, "Zachary even wakes up."

There was a sudden moment of silence and everyone was looking down and fiddling with their hands.

"Sorry..." I mumbled. "I do want him to wake up soon. And recover fast and well."

They looked up at me. "Same here."

"Guys... I think I need a rest," Damon said, pulling up his sheets a little.

"Oh, okay! We'll come back soon!" Kristen hurried over to Damon's side and helped him pull up his sheets.

I fluffed his pillow and let him lay back down comfortably.

"See you soon," Kris and I whispered and closed the door quietly.

"That was fast," I mumbled the moment the door closed.

"Yeah, thanks to you."

"I'm sorry! I didn't mean to..."

"It's okay. We all want Zachary to wake up soon."

I shouldn't have been so insensitive. Guess all that we can do now is take care of Zachary, Kael, and Damon. The near future will just follow.

"Dalanie!" Mum screamed, rushing to my side the second I stepped into the house.

"Uh, hey... Mum?"

"Oh goodness," she wiped my sweaty face.

"It's okay," I calmed her down. "I know what happened."

"You... do?"

I sighed and nodded. Actually I wish that no one will remind me of this again.

"I'm sorry, Dal."

"It... it's okay," I muttered as I felt hot tears making their way out of my eyes.

Blinking furiously, I fought to get them back in.

"Mum, I need a rest," I said, hoping my voice didn't sound too shaky. She let go of me and I bolted straight up to my room.

Slamming the door shut and locking it, I jumped onto my bed and cried into my pillow.

I care.

I care so much about him.

It pains me so badly to see him in that state.

It's not a crush or infatuation.

I think it's love.

Riiiiiiiing!

Groaning, I slammed my hand on the top of the alarm clock. "Shut up," I told it.

The sunshine shone through my big bedroom window and hit my face. Turning over the other direction, my eyes casually shifted to the light blue notebook on my table.

Dalanie's Diary, it read. I took a deep breath and grabbed the book. Flipping over the cover and a few pages, I silently read my diary.

24th December

A White Christmas Eve

Dear Diary,

There was this good-looking (I won't admit he's hot) guy that came by Aunt J's place for her family Christmas Eve reunion dinner. I judge that he's a rich and smug kiddo who rules his school. He winked at me. I'll admit I was stunned for a second. And he's got such a mesmerizing smile! At night, I went over to Kristen's house and on the way there, got stopped by him drinking beer by the roadside. That guy had the nerve to ask for the chocolates I was going to give to Kris! He's a total jerk! I called him a brat and gave him an attitude. Kristen told me it was a mistake to remember. I don't know what I've done wrong. I've sassed jerks so many times before.

Oh well, it's late, I gotta head to bed. I'll write another time, diary. Bye for now!

~ Dalanie McN.

After reading this page, I started tearing up a little.

Zachary... I actually miss his arrogant and cocky behaviour. It's quite something that I want in my boring life.

Knock! Knock! "Hello in there," I heard an unfamiliar little boy's voice.

Who could that be?

I dragged myself toward the door and opened it a little. Seeing a little boy with an optimistic smile immediately made me feel calmer.

"You look horrible. Tissues?" he said and held up a box of them.

"Thank you," I grinned and ruffled his hair lightly.

"Are you okay? I know my brother's accident had quite an impact on you."

My brother's accident?

So... he could either be Zachary, Damon or Kael's younger brother?

I shrugged. "Who's your brother?"

"The best of them all."

"The boys are all the best," I laughed heartedly.

"Nuh-uh," he shook his head and pointed a finger. "Only one. Zachary Huxley."

I stood there, stunned.

Mini Zachary Huxley waved his hand in front of me. "Are you lost?" he asked innocently.

"Huh? Oh, I'm fine, thank you," I snapped back to reality and looked down at mini Z.H.

"That's great! My older brother would be upset to know that you're lost if you are."

I gave him a reassuring smile. "By the way, what's your name?"

Boy, did I finally get the chance to ask him that.

"I'm Oscar," he boasted his name proudly. "Like the green garbage guy in Sesame Street."

Oh my. That cuteness is unbearable.

"Only difference is, you don't live in a bin like the Sesame Street Oscar does!" I laughed and stroked his hair.

"Yeah, that's sad," Oscar said as he pulled a sad puppy face.

"Why? Do you want to live in a garbage bin?"

"No, Oscar in Sesame Street is friends with Big Bird and I want to be friends with Big Bird but I'm not."

This little boy is miles apart from that Zachary Huxley! His innocence is so adorable!

"Don't worry, Big Bird is friends with everyone! He's your friend too," I bent down and picked him up, then sat him on my bed.

"Really?" Oscar's clear blue eyes looked up at me with so much hope filled in it.

I nodded. "Of course. He's my friend too."

"Then can we meet him someday?"

"Yeah. Hopefully, we will meet him soon!"

"Awesome!" Oscar jumped off my bed and pranced around the room excitedly.

I was about to ask him how he knew me and all when Aunt J popped her head in. "Sweetie, let's get going now. Do you want to see your brother?"

"Yes! Yes!" Oscar turned around and dashed for the door.

"Hey Dalanie, hope you had a great first time with Oscar," she smiled.

"Definitely. He's such a dear."

"Unlike his brother Zachary, right?" Aunt J whispered and winked, poking a tongue out.

"I thought you were on Zachary's side!" I tried to hold back my laughter.

"You thought!" she laughed out loud and opened the door wider. "Wanna accompany us to go see Zac?"

I immediately hesitated after hearing this.

"Sorry, Dal. If you don't feel like going, it's really fine."

"No, it's okay. I'd love to go. Just let me get a box of chocolates ready."

After the seemingly endless and thought-filled ride, we reached the hospital.

Aunt J, Oscar and I went up to the room. Initially I expected to find Mr and Mrs Huxley in the room, but they weren't.

"Looks like my sister isn't here," Aunt J casually commented.

"Zacharieeeeeeee!" Oscar tip-toed and yelled into his brother's ear.

"Oscar!" Aunt J pulled Oscar away from Zachary's bed. "Don't disturb the people in the other rooms!"

"Oscar," I bent down and opened up my arms. He came running to me and I hugged him close. "Aunt J is right. You'll disturb the other people."

We pulled away and he sighed. "Okay, I won't do that again."

Smiling, I lifted the little boy up onto a chair, I started talking to him.

"Did you know that although a person may be in a coma, he or she can actually still hear what is going on around them?"

"Do you mean... Zac can hear everything we say?"

"Yup, of course!"

Oscar hopped off the chair and whispered something to his brother. After waiting for a while, Oscar stared at his brother, seemingly waiting for a response, but didn't get it. He started bursting into tears and I quickly ran over to comfort him.

"Oscar," I wrapped him gently and wiped away his tears. "It doesn't mean that if you talk to Zachary, he will wake up. He needs to have the will to wake up. Only he can wake himself up."

Oscar nodded and I continued. "But we can helped him wake up," I winked.

"Really?!" Oscar stopped crying.

"Yeah, we can!"

He started dancing around like a ballerina and that act made me laugh.

Finally, he stopped twirling around and came back to me. "How do we do it?"

"Well," I tapped a finger on my chin. "We talk to him as if he's awake."

"Okay."

Oscar walked to his brother's side and started talking to him. "Hello Zachy. It's me, Oscar. How are you? I'm fine. The girl I like, Christina, forgot to bring her pencil case today. I lent one of my pencils to her and she hugged me."

Watching this warm scene made me tear up a little. I think even Aunt J started tearing up.

Oscar waited for a while. There seemed to be a small movement around Zachary's lips. I moved closer. It seemed as though he was trying to smile. But then the movements stopped.

"He was moving! Did you see that?!" the boy jumped up and down excitedly. Aunt J stood up and hurried over to Zachary. Oscar continued talking.

"Then at the end of school, we were walking out the gates and Christina came by our house and gave me a picture that she drew. It was a picture of a pencil inside a heart."

This time, Zachary's index finger shifted a little.

"He's moving!!!!!!" Oscar screamed. Aunt J was too overwhelmed to speak that she didn't even tell Oscar off for making so much noise.

I was happy for everyone. Please, Zachary. Wake up soon. Your friends and family are all cheering for you to wake up.

"I hope he wakes up soon," I grinned and clasped my hands together.

Aunt J and Oscar looked at me happily and nodded.

"Oh, yes. Um, this box of chocolates is for Zac-" I told Aunt J but stopped my sentence halfway and decided to speak to Zachary himself. "I mean, you. I remember how you stopped me in my tracks on Christmas Eve. You said you wanted chocolates. Here, you can have all the chocolates in this box! Just please promise me you'll wake up and eat them?"

No reply. A finger twitched a little. Afterwards, there was nothing. Just the same old, slow and heavy breathing.

"I'll leave this here. Eat them when you wake up, okay?" I said, then turned and left the room after saying an awkward goodbye to Aunt J and Oscar.

Seeing Zachary trying so badly to wake up from his coma pained me in my heart. I couldn't bear to see more.

Maybe running away temporarily is the best thing to do at this time?
