The Unbearable Burden, Episode Two

"Are you okay? You are behaving in a strange way since I returned from Lagos? Is there anything bothering you? If you ever have any problem, don't forget to share it with me. Remember, I'm your husband and you are not supposed to keep secrets from me. If you have any problem, please don't hesitate to let me know. I will quickly fix things up because I don't want anything to ever disturb my lovely wife. Or, have I done anything wrong? If have done anything wrong, let me know and I will apologize immediately." Chima said to his wife Purity. He was trying to catch up with his wife since he returned from Lagos. The time was 9pm in the night and they had just finished eating their evening meal. Chima sat in one of the cushions in the living room while Purity relaxed her head on his chest.

It was a cozy evening, at least for Chima, but not for Purity. She has not recovered from the shock since she discovered that she was pregnant and the baby does not belong to her husband. She was confused. The who burden was eating her up and she was losing weight.

"My dear husband, you did not do anything wrong and there is nothing eating me up.

In fact, my mood has never been better. Just that I

missed you so much when you travelled to

Lagos. There was no one to keep me company

and I was all alone in the house. This made me

feel very lonely. But now that you are back, my

happiness has returned in full gear. And please,

you have not done anything wrong. As a matter

of fact, you are a perfect man. A gift packaged

and sent to me from heaven. I'm so happy to

have you as my husband." Purity lied to her

husband. She has never lied to him, but this

seemed to be an entirely different situation. She

does not know how to explain to her husband

that another man got her pregnant. Not that she

was at home and someone forced her, but that

she went to a night club and someone did it to

her without her knowledge. She had thought of

how to open her mouth and say those words,

but she could not muster the needed courage.

Days passed and weeks followed and soon, her pregnancy clocked two months. It was no longer possible to hide it from her husband without a proper explanation. Purity thought of simply pinning the pregnancy on her husband but she was afraid that the man might find out later. Besides, her conscience did not allow her to pin the baby on him. She decided to run to her friend, Lucia to ask some critical questions.

"You know have not really asked you what happened that very night. Who was the man that came home with me?" Purity asked.

"My boyfriend was the one who helped us drive the car. We were together and after we dropped you off, he also drove me home. After that, he had to drive to his house with the car. Why are you asking?" Lucia responded with curiousity.

"I'm asking because I need to know what happened. There is a baby in my womb and the baby does not belong to my husband. I complained to you the morning after we visited the night club that I saw male liquid fertilizer on my undies and I was very sure a man touched me. I'm so certain that the man who touched me that night also got me pregnant. I have not recovered from the shock and I can no longer face my face my husband." Purity said.

"Why are you so sure? How do you know that the baby does not belong to your husband? You are just imagining things. You have lived with your husband for months before that night. He may well be the father of the baby in your womb. Stop creating problems for yourself. Tell your husband that you are pregnant for him. That's all." Lucia said.

"I disagree. My husband cannot be the father of the child. That very day that he travelled to Lagos, I did a pregnancy test and it came out negative. So he could not have gotten me pregnant in his absence. And there is no way I can pin the baby on him. It is wrong. I have to find out who is the true father of the child." Purity said with tears in her eyes.

"You are just brining unnecessary burden to yourself. Tell your husband that you are pregnant for him. I'm sure he will not bother to know if he is the one or not. He will accept the baby wholeheartedly. He would never know you visited a night club and he would never know that another man touched you and got you pregnant. That is assuming he is not the father of the child. But I'm sure he is the father of the child. You are just imagining things." Lucia said. She was forceful with her assertions but Purity was not buying her ideas.

"I have told you there is no way I'm pinning a baby on my husband. I have to know the whole truth before taking any action. At least, let me know the father of the baby in my womb." Purity said with seriousness on her face.

"And how do you intend to find out the father of the baby. You can barely recall what happened that night. How are you going to know who got you pregnant?" Lucia asked.

"You will help me out because you were with me that night. I need your boyfriend's phone number. I want to talk to him." Purity said.

"Are you insinuating that my boyfriend got you pregnant? Is that what you are saying? That he touched you without your knowledge?" Lucia asked angrily.

"That is not what I'm saying but he is also a suspect. He was with us that night and I believe he must have something to say about whatever happened to me." Purity said. She stood up and became very serious with the conversation.

"I'm not giving you my boyfriend's number." Lucia said.

"Please Lucia. Okay, at least, can you ask him? Ask him on my behalf." Purity pleaded.

"You want me to ask my boyfriend if he touched you? What are you saying babe? I take that as an insult." Lucia said with an elevated voice.

"Yes, it is important to ask. Anything could have happened that night because we were all drunk. Purity said, She was now crying profusely.

"Please Purity, go home and tell your husband that you are pregnant. You are married and not single for God's sake. He will accept the baby with his whole heart. Don't allow this situation destroy our friendship or ruin your marriage." Lucia was no longer comfortable with Purity's presence in her apartment.

"All I'm asking is for you to help find out the true father of my child. That's all." Purity responded but this ended up infuriating Lucia.

"Purity please, leave my house and don't ever come back. Go home to your husband and settle your problems there. I and my boyfriend have no hand in it." Lucia said as she stood up and opened the door and ordered Purity out.

On her way home, Purity decided to confess the truth to her husband.
