"Forgive me for coming to see you this late."

I just stared at him as he spoke, his soft tone lightly dusted with an accent I couldn't recognize. Part of me wanted to sit down with him and hear whatever he had to say, while the other part wanted to scream and get out of the place.

Noella placed her hand on my back. "Let's take a seat, okay?"

I swallowed hard and let her guide me to the sofa opposite his. He only sat after Noella and I took our seats.

To my surprise he looked mildly nervous, his massive hands rubbing over his jean-clad thighs.

"How are you doing, princess?" he smiled gently, startling gray eyes crinkling at the corners.

I stayed quiet, not ready to speak yet. All I could do was stare at him, awed by the facial similarities we shared.

I was disappointed in myself when my heart stopped pounding with the fear of meeting him, disappointed in myself that I couldn't find the hate I'd had for him anymore. All that was left was anxiety from meeting my biological father.

Oran Demir should've disgusted me.

I directed my self-hate at him, folding my arms and hardening my voice. "Why am I here? Take me home to my parents right now."

There was a sudden hint of panic in his eyes as they darted between me and Noella. He ran his hands through his chocolatey locks. "Princess—"

"Don't call me that," I said, getting up from my seat. I placed my hands on my hips and walked to the huge window. "Please don't call me that," I said more quietly.

"I'm sorry, it must be the excitement from finally meeting you. I can't help it. You are my child after all."

"Please just stop!" I turned back to him, my voice rising an octave per second. "Why am I here? Why am I meeting you now? Why all the fuss when you could have easily knocked on my front door? How the hell is Oran Demir, a world class criminal, my biological father?"

He licked his lips nervously, shifting in his seat. "If I'm going to tell you what's going on, I'll need you to take a seat."

I hesitated for a moment but complied and joined Noella again, her hand going straight to caressing my back. I'd be damned if it didn't calm me down.

Demir took a deep breath. "What has your mom told you about your father, your real father?"

Mom. Of course. Who else could pull the deception of the century other than my mother? I wouldn't dare put it past her lying about being my birth mom too.

I physically swallowed my infuriation. "Not a lot. She just mentioned he was a painter she had met a long time ago. But I'm guessing she lied."

He gave a slight shrug of his heavy shoulders. "Your mother must have had her own reasons for doing what she did. But what matters is that we're together now, even after she kept you from me."

"She must have had a good reason. People don't just go around hiding babies from criminals." I really wanted to meet my mom half-way.

He frowned, looking a little taken aback. "I'm not a criminal, Olivia."

"I beg to differ." Refusing to be lied to further, I said, "How did you meet my mother?"

Demir sighed but spoke anyway. "It was several years ago when your parents had attended one of my fundraisers. When one of my colleagues introduced me to your parents, I was utterly taken by your mothers beauty. And it seems she was taken by me too." He tried and failed to hold back a smile.

I swallowed the bile rising in my throat. "So you both just decided to screw and stab my dad in the back then? They had a daughter together, you must have known that." My voice turned sharp.

He clasped his hands together, firming his expression. "We weren't proud of ourselves, I promise you that. But we were also young and foolish."

"Yeah, no shit."

"Language, sweetheart."

The soft but firm reprimand from Noella had me immediately turning to her. "I'm sorry." But I paused when I realized something, moving away from her touch.

She caught up with my thoughts. "Yes, Oran is my son, which makes you my granddaughter. My one and only granddaughter," she said with a teary smile.

Her smile was a replica of mine.

"I'm surrounded by liars I guess." She reached out but I stood before she could touch me. "Take me back to Shayne."

"You know I can't do that," Demir said, standing as well.

"Why not?"

"I just got you back. I'm not sending you out there until I'm certain it's safe for you. I know it's a lot to digest but you'll soon see that everything I've ever done has been for you."

I stared blankly at the man whose face resembled my own. "How does putting away the people I love make me safe?"

He smiled, proud and soft. "Olivia, your step-father might be an honest man, but he made some unwise decisions that got him mixed up with the wrong people. If I hadn't quickened the process you could have been hurt." He leaned towards the edge of his seat. "I don't think I need to explain about your girlfriend, do I?"

"Shayne has done nothing but protect me while you were busy trying to kill us." I didn't bother hiding the hostility in my voice.

He only smiled wider in return. "Collateral is necessary for progress, princess. But in any case, the people I hired were far too messy and unprofessional, I never meant for you to get hurt."

"But it's okay for others to lose their lives then, huh?"

A well-hidden flash of temper momentarily lit his eyes. "Do you have any idea what kind of person your so called girlfriend is."

"What I know is enough. Whatever else won't change how I feel about her."

"No daughter of mine will be foolish and naïve," he said, his low voice booming.

My anger only worsened. "And no father of mine will be manipulative and psychotic. I now understand why you and mom fucked all those years ago, you're the same. I bet you both pulled this bullshit together."

"If anything, it's your mother's fault we have to go through all this. If I had known sooner that she was pregnant with my child, I would have protected you from the beginning."

"She was wise to keep me from you then. She must know what kind of homicidal maniac she was screwing around with."

"Think what you want, I don't really care at this point. All I want to do is perform my duty as a father."

"Well, you're doing a terrible job so far, I can tell you that. If you think I'm ever going to accept you as my father, you're very wrong. I'd rather die."

He actually looked hurt, his hands going to his hips. "You don't mean that."

"I do. I really do." At least I hope I do.

"Then I'm going to have to let you go."

"What?" Whatever games this man was playing, I didn't like them. "What do you mean?"

"I mean that I'll let you go, and you have my word. On one condition however."

But of course. "Which is?"

He tapped on his ear, tilting it to me to show a well hidden earpiece in it. "My men have just let me know that the first line of defense has been infiltrated by your girlfriend and her goons. But before you get excited, you should know that they have a sniper on her right now."

Despite the mortification wrapping around my heart, I said, "And you expect me to believe you?"

"Honestly that part is up to you. I don't know if you're in a place to gamble anything right now."

I hated that he was right. "What's your point?"

"The only way I can let you go is if I know that Shayne West is no longer in your life, for good. I would have been okay with putting her away because you'd both eventually forget each other as she rots in prison. But since you want to leave so bad, I don't see the problem with ending her right now."

He was a devil.

For the first time in days, tears welled up in my eyes. "Doesn't the duty of a father also include protecting my feelings? Threatening the life of the one I'm in love with doesn't exactly check that box."

He pinched the bridge of his nose. "Princess, I know how it feels to be young and in love, but trust me it's all just fantasy. Do you really think a stone-cold killer like Shayne could love you and grow old with you?"

"I have no reason to believe she wouldn't." And I wholeheartedly believed that.

Demir sighed heavily and nodded at Noella. "You can show her."

I turned to her and saw her apologetic expression as she picked up a tablet on a nearby coffee table. She swiped over it a couple of times before handing it to me.

"I'm okay thanks. I'm tired out of my mind with the lies."

I turned away from Noella but paused when I heard Shayne's voice. It was muffled and sounded like it was coming from the tablet behind me.

"Her father could be it, don't you think?" I heard Shayne say.

"He'd be excellent actually. His name could carry some weight for the company. But do you really think she'll fall for you?" It was Sasha's voice.

Unable to help myself I turned back to Noella and took the tablet from her, sitting down before looking at the screen.

My heart caught when I saw Sasha seated comfortably on Shayne's lap. They were in what looked like a recording studio, the video being taken from what I assumed was the CCTV camera installed in the wall.

Shayne's hair was longer, just like it was when I first met her. "You should have seen her, a total mess. It was honestly embarrassing how she was practically tripping over herself around me. And then the girl had the nerve to bang my door. My poor baby had done nothing wrong,"

"No one but you gives a shit about your damn car, Shay," Sasha said, getting off Shayne's lap. "But on a serious note, you really should put in the effort to get Alexander Ryans on the board of the company. Reyvox is getting bigger, we need bigger names to go along with it."

"Jeez I get it. I get to him through the girl. It'll be way too easy. I just hope Christina won't find out and hate me." She actually managed to look mildly solemn.

"It's for a good cause either way." She bent and kissed Shayne on the cheek before leaving the room.

The video abruptly ended, but I continued to stare at the screen, my tears falling to it as I tried to find a plausible explanation for what I just saw.

"Why would you show me this?" I said, raising my head to Demir, the sight of him blurred with my tears.

He was openly remorseful. "I know it's hard to accept, but you had to know Shayne's true feelings for you. She was only using you to expand her company."

Stubborn and probably not yet hit by reality, I still defended the love of my life. "Well, this may have been the case, but it was a long time ago and feelings do change. I know Shayne genuinely cares about me now, just as much as I do her. She would never hurt me."

Demir ran his fingers through his hair, clearly torn. "You should see the next video."

I really shouldn't have, but crushed with a lack of clarity, I immediately swiped to the next video.

It was a discreetly taken video of the inside of an old warehouse. A few people I recognized as part of the Raven Angels stood around, including Byron, almost unrecognizable with how menacing he looked. A blonde woman sat on the ground near him, sobbing and hopeless.

However, what gripped ice-cold and tight around my heart was Shayne talking to a man I recognized. That skittery hooded man who had ruined my first date with Shayne at the beach. Said man was now bleeding profusely from his leg, the cause no doubt being the silver gun in Shayne's hand.

Their voices were inaudible, but the stress lining the tone of the injured man's voice was heart-wrenching. When I saw Shayne step back—thinking the whole ordeal was over—I never expected her to unflinchingly raise her weapon and pull the trigger at the man's head.

That alone made me nearly pass out but it was the look of nonchalance on her face as she turned away and said something about changing her shirt even as the woman on the ground wailed like a siren.

I couldn't recognize the demon I'd fallen in love with.
