Family Planning, Episode Three

"Hello! Good evening doctor. It's me, Emilia. I wanted to talk to you earlier in the day when we came to the hospital, but there are things I didn't want my husband to hear. Look, the truth is that I need your help." Emilia said over the phone. She sounded panicky and the doctor could sense that there was some sort of trouble. The time was 8pm in the night and Justice was already asleep when Emilia picked up her phone and went into the toilet to secretly talk to the doctor. She hopes to fix things before she and her husband would go the fertility clinic the next morning for the pregnancy test. She knew that if she fails to fix things, she would be exposed after the pregnancy test.

"What is the issue? I hope you are fine? What kind of help would you want from me? Are you sick or in any kind of emergency situation?" The doctor asked Emilia. He just rounded up his evening shift at the hospital and was picking up his car keys to leave the fertility clinic when her all came in.

"Doctor, I'm in deep trouble. Like, I don't even know how I got myself into this mess, but I hope to come out of it with my marriage still intact. But I'm going to need your help. I want to be sure that I can confide in you. Please, can you help me keep the secret I'm about to reveal to you? Can I trust you not to ever mention this secret to anyone else?" Emilia asked the doctor. She was talking in low tones, and she made sure the door of the toilet was tightly locked. She was sitting on the toilet seat as if she was doing a serious business.

"You can trust me with your health secrets. I'm a professional and I don't disclose information obtained from my clients. Tell me whatever the problem is and I will find a way to help you out. "The doctor said to Emilia. Emilia took a deep breath and then went ahead to open her secret to the doctor.

"I'm pregnant already. But the problem is that my husband is not responsible for the pregnancy. And I don't want him to ever find out that I cheated on him with another man and got pregnant. When we came to the hospital earlier today, I was hoping that we would go straight into the lab for the fertilisation where I would tell you I'm already pregnant. But when you said there is going to be a pregnancy test, I got seriously scared." Emilia said with trembling voice. She was crying profusely and she hoped that her cries and sobs would soften the heart of the doctor. She paused a little to hear what the doctor would say.

"What would you want me to do in this situation?" The doctor asked. He knew where the conversation was going but he still asked. In fact, he knew what was required of him. It was not the first time he is getting a request to help cover up paternity fraud. He has done it several times.

"You know what to do. Just confirm that I'm yet pregnant and tell my husband that I'm in my most fertile period. Perform the fertilization. Tell my husband that you used his liquid fertilizer which we stored in your facility. You will help me announce that I'm pregnant in few weeks to come. Just cover up my pregnancy and make it look as if it is my husband's fertilizer at your facility that got me pregnant. That's all! I promise I will reward you will if you will help me cover this mistake." Emilia said.

"How much are you offering me for this service? You know it is dangerous and I could lose my medical license if it is discovered that I assisted you to cover up a paternity fraud. I need to be handsomely rewarded for the risk I'm taking on your behalf." The doctor said with an air of finality. What he said actually relieved Emilia and by that, she knew they were making progress. Every man has a price and the doctor just openly asked her bribe.

"I will give you N2 million Naira if you help me cover up this mistake. Just do it perfectly and never allow anyone discover my secret." Emilia said. Her husband is very rich and he has always filled her band account with so much money. So, money has never been her problem since the first day she met Justice.

"Okay! Consider it done. I will cover up your secret tomorrow." The doctor said.

The next day, Emilia and her husband drove to the fertility clinic as planned. The doctor was quick to carry out everything he had planned with Emilia the previous night. He went into the lab with Emilia alone. He refused to let the nurses or lab technicians into the room. When Justice, her husband wanted to follow them, he was told he won't be needed as the lab was out of bound for non-patients and non-staff. He had no choice but to respect the protocol. He was kept at the reception when the doctor and Emilia went into the lab. They stayed there for about two hours before coming out.

"Congratulations sir! You and your wife came at the right time. She is currently very fertile and we have performed the procedure. We expect her to be become pregnant and you will see the result. Congratulations in advance." The doctor told Justice. Justice was so happy and he jumped up from the chair where he was seated. He hugged his wife in joy. When they left the hospital, Emilia transferred N2 million to the doctor as agreed.

A month later, they returned to the hospital for a pregnancy test. It was not actually a test. It was the completion of what they had planned. It took only a few minutes and the doctor announced to Justice that his wife is pregnant.

"You are going to be a father soon. What are you going to name the baby?" Emilia asked her husband.

"I'm thinking of a sweet name. But let's go home and celebrate first. I'm so happy I'm going to be a father." Justice said. He took his wife's hand and walked her to the car. The doctor looked at them and shook his head knowingly.

"What a shame! Only if the man knows what is going on. Well, it is none of my business. All I want is my money!" The doctor said in his heart.
