The Calm Before a Storm

_____________

Connor was in the locker room at his game, pulling on some of his pads and stretchy undershirts. But he really couldn't stop thinking about Serena, and additionally he couldn't stop thinking of the conversation he had with Destiny at the diner.

That ten letter word, commitment, swirled daggers into his heart. Every time he thought of Serena, her full smile, the soft colors that always seemed to be on her cheeks, her fractured blue eyes, her body that he only ever wanted his hands to touch, that stupid fucking word popped up and poured boiling water on those warm memories; leaving him slightly nauseous.

He really couldn't afford feeling like that right now, he did his very best to push her incandescent image in the back of his mind. Wrapping up memories of the outline of her curves and breathy voice he loved, moving them to a locked box in his mind for the next few hours.

He had to focus on something else.

Picking up his phone Connor called his mom, luckily he had the best news to deliver. After only one ring the phone clicked and his moms soft voice buzzed through the speakers.

"Oh hello my love, how are you doing. You're about to go on right?" His mothers sweet voice melted everything from his mind, and an easy smile floated on his lips.

"Yeah warmups are about to start, but I wanted to call real quick because I had something important to tell you. Is honey with you?"

"She's in the living room watching the pregame with your father."

"Grab her real quick." Connor could hardly hide his excitement in his voice, he walked over to a quieter section of the locker room.

His mom held the phone away from her face and called Honey's name, telling her it was Connor.

Immediately he heard a short scream and pounding feet on tile floor, his mom chuckled, "Your on speaker, go ahead Connor."

"Hey there honey bun watching the game?"

"Yes! You're gonna win Bugger I know it!" The little girls voice carried through in high pitched excitement, some of her words pronounced wrong on account of her missing teeth.

"Thank you," he laughed, "Now I know watching my game is fun and all but how about watching my game live. Stupid idea I know." Connor teased.

There was a gasp, and his mom spoke up "Wait do you-"

"Mmmhm, I got tickets for you and Honey to come to one of my play off games! Front row seats of course. Gotta have my biggest cheerleaders close by." Connor was smiling ear to ear, he could practically hear the shock on both their faces, "that includes the plane ticket to fly out here too."

There was a pause of silence on the other end, then Honey broke out in a fit of cheers and screams.

His mom shushed her, but he could hear her laugh and smile in her words. She was excited too.

"What do you say to your brother." She said to the ecstatic little girl.

"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I'm gonna be cheering the loudest I promise Bugger, I'm so excited I'm gonna wear all my wolf jerseys and paint my face red and blue!" She went on rambling about all the things she was gonna do, her words blending together in one long run on sentence he could barely understand.

"Alright alright, love the enthusiasm," He laughed and leaned on the concrete wall, "But I gotta go. See you guys in a couple weeks!"

"Bye son, we love you and good luck!"

"Bye! I'm so excited, you're gonna crush the other team!" Honey yelled close to the phone.

"Of course we are." Connor said smugly, "Bye guys." He clicked his phone off and sighed. Grateful for the smile his family put on his face seemingly always. They made it possible for him to keep his mind where it should be, and that wasn't on a certain hot headed brunette.

The locker room had grown increasingly louder as he walked down the the hall to the changing room, he saw his whole team there shooting the shit and getting ready for warm up. All in various stages of readiness.

Once Connor entered Josh immediately noticed him, his best friend raised his hand and called him over. "yo!"

He shook his head and grabbed his jersey, slipping his number on over his head, falling loosely over his padded clothes.

Connor joined Josh and Luca where they sat on the bench, immediately Luca narrowed mischievous eyes at him over Josh, "Deluca you look like shit as always, busy night with Destiny?"

The mention of her name caused a physical gag to boil in his throat, his features hardened at the man, "Jesus no. I'd rather remove both my eyes with a spoon. How'd you hear about that."

"We ran into her at the club last night and she was talking about how she was at your house. Didn't say much but implied a lot." Josh interjected while Luca just wiggled his eyebrows at him.

Connor groaned and shoved a hand into his face, of course she did. That was Destiny's thing, starting shit, truly Connor never witnessed a women specialize in it better than her.

"Classic Destiny, that couldn't be farther from the truth. She came over unannounced, invited herself in spewing some nonsense about hooking up again, and I kicked her out no more than five minutes later." Connor spat out while he laced up his skates.

He didn't really know why Destiny repulsed him so much now, not too long ago a meaningless hook up with her would be easy to accept. But now the simple idea annoyed him.

"Wow that's mental, she's always been a little loose though. Models and drugs go hand and hand so I think some things are fried up there from all the partying she does." Luca poked his temples a few times motioning towards his brain, "Hey Connor when are you throwing another party anyway? Yours are always the best."

"Probably never, his new neighbor is a living breathing Karen fresh in her twenties." Josh remarked in the same beat he ripped his laces tight.

"Hot as fuck though." Luca added with a nod which caused Connor to slowly narrow a dark glare at him.

His lids slid down into darkened slits with murderous intent burning behind them, his jaw set in stone as all his movements went still, "Watch your mouth Luca."

Luca was clearly uncomfortable under Connors gaze, he slipped his eyes away and tried at an uneasy smile "Okay...chill Connor it was a joke." His voice mumbled off.

Josh watched Connor under his own questioning gaze, clearly reading something deeper from the interaction. Connor looked away from Luca to Josh and immediately eased up, Josh shot him a 'wtf' look and he simply shrugged.

Coach Stetson walked in a second later and called out, his booming voice vibrating off all the lockers and capturing all their divided attentions, "Listen up, we are due on the ice in 5. Is everyone in here ready?" He glanced down at his clipboard.

Looking around briefly, everyone noticed the absent member.

"Coach Liam isn't here. But I know he's dressed and ready I saw him in here earlier."

Connor narrowed his eyebrows together trying to ignore the sudden snag in his chest that filled him up with unexplainable discomfort.

The coach mumbled curses under his breath before turning to Connor and sighing, "Go find him." He groaned and straightened his Denver Wolves hat.

"Sure." The whole team knew better than to speak when the coach was upset, they sat rigid as stone while Connor got up and walked out of the room. Every pair of eyes set on his back while he left.

Connor walked the perimeter of the arena, ignoring the scream of fans when they saw his jersey number and trying to ignore the annoying slow thump of his heart.

He rounded the edge to the left entrance, nothing, then circled by to the right entrance.

He caught sight of Liam leaning sideways against the rink walls, his back to him, seemingly alone.

Immediately He felt his shoulders relax from the tense coil they were in, "Yo Liam! Get your-"

The blond male angled his body towards the noise, giving way to the small female that was in front of him.

Those wide blue eyes and pouty lips were not foreign to him, the bounce and sweep of her chocolate hair has been tangled around his fingers countless times.

And just seeing her ignited a low fire in the pit of his stomach that drawled hot tendrils all over his body.

"Serena?" Connor's voice flattened.

She took a deep breath, as if prepared for this interaction and dreading it like a disease.

Liam even looked uneasy as they both shared a long tempestuous gaze.

"What are you doing here." Connor closed the space between the three of them, already feeling that fire boil hotter into anger.

In all his efforts to push her to the back of his mind, focus on other things then the tempt of her sultry mouth or the dull pleasure he found from their hate fueled interactions. Here she was, consuming every waking nerve in his body, wrapping him up in her. As if reminding him that she was what made his body tick, what made it burn, and feel alive.

She opened her mouth hesitantly, playing with the words she wanted to speak on her tongue like a game. But Liam spoke up for her.

"I invited her tonight." Liam stood up a little straighter, putting bricks behind his sturdy words, oozing confidence and sizing him up subtly.

That small action only made him more angry, his heart was working in dreadful beats, while the fire burning up in him blazed beneath.

"Oh did you? So this is a little date I'm assuming." His words fell from his lips like poison, petty and condescending. The word date sounded like a curse word.

Liam went to talk again, but Connor snapped toward him. Getting close to his face and letting his dark hues narrow into slits, "I'm speaking to Serena not you."

It shut him up, and finally confronted her.

Her own expression mirrored his. As if on schedule they were building up with anger and hatred, the hot emotions rubbing together between them and snapping bolts of unseen electricity.

"What would you like me to say Connor? Because frankly I've got nothing I want to say to you." She spoke so calmly, keeping her voice level and low but still backed with anger.

Connor furrowed his eyebrows together hard, his hands clenched next to him.

"Say what it is."

"Fine, a date. Satisfied now?"

Those words flooded him with his own insecurities. Feelings he didn't want address or pushed aside. But the main one he could name. Was fucking rage.

He felt like a toddler, watching someone put their grimly hands all over his perfect toy. He imagined her moaning Liam's name, his hands scorching over every inch of her skin he touched, and even engaging in mindless banter with her. Filling his spot.

He wanted to yell, kick and scream and smack that dumb blonde around till he was apologizing to Connor on his knees.

But he had no damn reason to, even as he stood their, staring into her fierce gaze searching for any reason he had to be upset. He couldn't find one damn good one.

And that only pissed him off more, filling his right mind with a foggy red haze.

Instead he let out a sound between a snicker and scoff, and leveled at low condescending smirk at her, then slid it over to Liam, "Aren't you two cute. Coach is looking for you, get on the ice Liam."

He shouldered past him, not making it a secret when his broad shoulder whacked into the shorter man's intentionally.

It pushed him off his balance a little, causing both of them to stare off after him as Connor walked away.

A few feet down he stopped and narrowed his glare back at the two of them from over his shoulder, "That means now." He demanded, and then finally left.

Trying to pump some of the blood back into his heart where it seemed to be gushing out of him in a puddle at Serena's feet.

The ice felt cold, but the air that buzzed in the stadium was hot. Mingling together to brew the perfect storm.

They were now just skating in the calm before it.

The game went well, of course, as it always does. Connor was laser focused, locked into the match so intently his eyes didn't stray from the puck once and he was sure his face was set in an unchanging scorn. In hockey anger and passion were the same, the fuel that made the players go.

The warm up was tense too.

Liam and Connor spun around each other, plucking at that thin rope pulled taut between them. Little words were exchanged, but the piercing looks that struck through the air was enough. It felt heavy, full of intentions and threats, both men guarding a prize.

The rest of the team could feel it too, that storm.

They steered clear. Doing what they were told, letting the two lions prowl around each other.

The game was even tenser, multiple times Connor stole the puck from Liam. His teammate. He wouldn't pass to him when he was open, taking unnecessary risks when he didn't need to.

But he delivered, Every time his petty plays worked out. Whether from luck, or Connor's sheer will, he didn't know.

But the tension on the ice couldn't even be cut by their slick blades.

There was only three minutes left of the game. Connor was hot, the chill of the ice spreading a welcomed chill across his face and neck. For the first time that night, he spared a glance to the stands. His gaze locking with Serena's like a magnet snapping into place.

She was staring at him, arms crossed, and hatred lacing everyone of her features. She knew exactly what he was doing this whole game. And he'd be lying if he said he didn't enjoy it.

Liam skated closer to him, both Players guarding the goal as their other team mates grappled with the puck down the ice.

Both staring ahead at the game, but they were sizing each other up wordlessly, as they had been all night.

"Stay away from her." Connor mumbled through a husky demand, his eyes trained forward.

Liam whipped his head over to him, "Excuse me?"

"Are you fucking deaf or an idiot? I said stay away from Serena."

Liam let out a tense chuckle, "Connor I've always had respect for you. But you're getting on everyone of my damn nerves now. That women is not yours, and she came here for me. Get over it."

"She came here for you? Really?" Connor let a cocky smirk slip onto his lip as he only spared Liam a measly sideways glance. As if he was better than him, as if that was all he disserved from him.

"Because I've made that women cum for me plenty of times. I've heard my name fall from her lips in breathy moans more times than your mother has said I love you to you. Serena is fucking mine, and I don't want to see you, or anyone else near her ever." Connor grumbled out through a tense jaw. It felt like some strange person was taking control of Connor's tongue and body. He'd never behaved this way over any women before.

He never lost such control over himself when someone he was involved with was shown more attention. But when it came to her, Connor felt like someone else was conducting his heart. Jumping inside of him to make him desperate and breathless for her. Willing to do anything, and scare anyone away to keep her.

Liam's eyes widened, then narrowed into slits, his face went dark and he threw his stick down on the ground. Flicking his gloves off, he pulled his helmet from his head and discarded it in the same fluid motion.

And the storm finally cracked lightning, thundering down on the both of them.

As if Connor was waiting for it, he flashed a devilish grin and threw his helmet down, removing his gloves and and stick with it.

"Looks like we've got a fight breaking out! Seems to be between....oh." The sports commentators were taken a back. It was common to see fights break out between opponents. But teammates?

The attention turned towards them in the midst of the crackling storm and fleeting minute of the game. They slowly circled each other, fist up, then there was another thunderous snap of lightening between them.

Liam threw his fist at Connor, his knuckles connected with the apple of his cheeks. Splitting the skin, his face whipped to side but he remained steady on his skates.

Taking opportunity of his unbalanced throw Connor threw his firm fist upwards cutting into his jaw, then taking his opposite fist and throwing it into his cheek. The crisp cold air in the arena split his knuckles, adding to the slew of scars that decorated his hands.

Even despite Connors hard punches Liam remained on his feet, staring at each other with murderous intent. He swung at him again but Connor managed to whip to the side, the punch clipping his right shoulder. But Liam used his other fist in the same second it connected with Connor's nose.

He groaned as a metallic liquid trickled into his swelling eye and down into his mouth, hearing Coach Stetson scream obscenities from the sidelines. Connor threw a punch into Liam's face and tackled him to the ground, the two men swinging and fighting like dogs as the whole stadium up roared in response to the storm below. All Connor could feel was the movement of his arms through the air , connecting with squishy skin repeatedly, spraying dollops of blood onto the ice. He felt his own vision blur with Liam's fist, but they were slower and weaker, hindered by his position underneath Connor.

Quickly teammates and refs broke up the fight, peeling the bloody men off each other as the game buzzer blared. Connor's head was ringing and he was growling like a fight dog being dragged away from a battle too soon. The blood that soaked his face made his vision red as well, staring at Liam being dragged opposite from him.

The eye of the storm where they fought was marked by the pure white ice, now tainted with deep scarlet.

He jerked out of Josh's grip, wiping his hand across his bloody nose. The cold blood smeared across his face and on to his hand, his brown eyes nearly black slits of anger. He observed the blood on his hand and groaned, pushing his skates into the ice, he left the rink.

Not sparing a glance to anyone else as he left, but looking back at the bloody spot on the ice.

Josh followed after him into the locker room, Connor ripped off his jersey and pads, haphazardly getting undressed and into his clothes as quickly as possible.

"Connor what the actual fuck was that?! They're taking Liam to the hospital." His friend was yelling but, his voice was drowned in concern mostly.

Connor didn't respond, just continued to take off his uniform.

"This is not like you, you act like a goon on the ice sure, but always with assholes on the other team. You're lucky you don't get suspended for the season after that!"

"Liam threw his gloves down first." Was all Connor snarled out.

Josh laughed in disbelief, "The whole game you were sabotaging his performance, he's one of our better players but he got pulled off the ice three times cause of you! The minute you two came back into the locker room, it was clear to everyone you two were angry." Josh put his hand on Connor's shoulders and softened his disposition, lowered his eyes and frowned. "Is this because of that girl?"

Connor whipped his shoulder forward from Josh's grasp. Keeping his back to him so he might not see the far off look in his eyes, might not see the things that Connor didn't even understand yet. Under the rage, he felt ashamed, staring at his bloody knuckles that anger fazed out and wrecked him with guilt. He was a coward, wearing prideful clothing.

"Just text me what the doctors say about Liam."
