Benefit of the Doubt

"You sure you don't want something to eat?"

"Hmm...what do you have?"

In response, Cal started shuffling through her fridge and cabinets while Grace sat in the living room. Cal's house, though older, had an open design, so she was able to talk to the brunette from the kitchen.

Cal was still trying to settle down from the little...incident at the front door that just happened. She was an uncomfortable mix of embarrassed and aroused, so she was having some trouble looking Grace in the eye.

What had she been thinking? Grace was obviously new to all this stuff, but here Cal was, bringing it on strong and trying to fuck it all up. She was extremely relieved that Grace hadn't rejected her – she was even more into it than Cal could've imagined. Surely Grace would've stopped her advances eventually...right?

Was she just going along with things to make Cal happy? The thought made Cal's mouth run dry, but it was too unlike Grace to really believe. Sure, the honor student was a suck up to the adults, but she'd never been one to give into Cal just for the sake of it. Still, it was almost just as hard to believe that Grace wanted her in the same way that she wanted Grace.

Regardless, Cal's instincts had taken complete control of her after missing the other girl for two weeks. Not to mention her own sexual frustration which had been going on before the two of them even started dating. Cal would have to keep a tighter reign on her emotions if she didn't want to drive Grace away from her.

...Still, that was easier said than done. Normally, Cal was sort of insecure with leading these sorts of things. Her ex-girlfriend, the only other person she'd ever dated, had taken all the initiative. Cal thought about how much more clumsy her own approach had been; her ex had been very deliberate and controlled whereas Cal was impulsive and almost animalistic.

Well, the bitch did have more experience, after all...

"I can't say we have a ton of food," Cal called out to Grace, scanning the half-empty shelves of her pantry. "Unless you want some snack cakes."

"I'll pass," Grace replied flatly.

"Then do you want something to drink? We've got tea, coffee, water...that's about it."

Figures. Cal's mom was usually too busy to do grocery shopping – she just gave Cal some money each week and told her to buy whatever if she was hungry. At least when Samantha lived at home she'd usually take the initiative in the kitchen. If Cal missed anything about her older sister, it was her cooking.

"I'm surprised you have tea," Grace remarked, a bit sarcastically. "Seems a bit refined for your taste."

Cal picked out a box of tea from the pantry, sensing that Grace wanted some of it. "I think my mom likes to drink it at night sometimes. Is jasmine alright?"

"Yes, thank you."

Cal boiled some water before pouring some into a couple of mugs and placing a tea bag inside each of them. She carried them over to the living room where Grace was sitting, placing one in front of Grace on the coffee table. Cal put her own down and sat next to the honor student.

"I'm sorry again...about earlier," Cal said, rubbing the back of her neck nervously. She was having trouble getting it out of her mind.

"I don't know why you keep apologizing," Grace said, taking a sip of her tea. "It's not like it doesn't take two of us to...you know...do that."

Cal was not entirely reassured, but she opted to drop it and ask a question that had been on her mind for a while. "So...are you, like, into girls then?"

"Obviously I am since I'm dating you." Grace flashed her an annoyed look. "And as far as I know, you are a girl."

Cal cracked a smile. "Hey, you don't know that for sure."

"Well, I guess I'll never know for sure, since I'm not going to go out of my way and check." Cal was a bit surprised by the boldness of her statement, but it must've been unintentional because Grace blushed after saying it, holding her tea close to her chin and averting her eyes.

Cal smirked a little. "Never?"

"Pervert."

Cal laughed a little. This manner of speaking reminded her of how they used to always bicker. Not that the banter had completely subsided – it just always seemed a lot more flirtatious now.

"Uh, but anyway, back to your original question..." Grace stared into her mug as she seemed to try and find the right words. "I don't really know for sure about my sexuality. My mom died around the time where people start thinking about that stuff, so I didn't exactly have a normal experience with puberty."

Cal looked at her understandingly. "I can imagine. No kid should have to deal with something so heavy."

Grace nodded. "I 'dated' a boy in 8th grade, if you could even call it that. But I wasn't all that interested in him...I was just kinda lonely and curious."

"Well, it's okay to not understand exactly what you're into," Cal offered, "Obviously just let me know if you're uncomfortable. I worry about that all the time."

Grace raised an eyebrow. "Really? You always seem super confident."

Cal blushed a little and scratched her cheek. "Nah, not around you."

Grace smiled, blushed a bit, and looked down. The cuteness of the action caused Cal's heart to throb.

"What about you?" Grace asked suddenly. "When did you figure out you were...a lesbian?"

"Ah, I figured I was like that from when I was a kid," Cal said. "I was pretty sure of it, but I kind of suppressed it a little since I was raised a little more traditionally."

"Wow, from a kid?"

"Yep! Never thought about boys at all."

"I feel like everything's so simple with you," Grace remarked. "Sometimes it makes me feel like I'm always overthinking things."

Cal smiled at her, leaning towards her a bit. "There's nothing wrong with thinking things through. Actually, I've been overthinking a lot recently."

Grace leaned towards her as well, lowering her voice a bit. "And why's that?"

Cal reached up to cup her cheek, inching her face closer. "Take a guess."

And with that, their lips connected. While the kiss from earlier was passionate and desperate, this one was rather slow and savoring. Cal's entire body felt like it was on fire from all this physical contact following a few weeks of hardly even getting to talk to each other. Her heart ached at the thought of having to go however many more weeks like that.

It was somewhat starting to scare Cal how much she liked the other girl – her feelings only seemed to grow stronger when they couldn't see each other, and every time they did meet, Cal felt herself falling deeper and deeper. She was afraid of getting hurt like last time – she would really be in terrible shape if this relationship went badly. Still, Cal couldn't resist continuing forward. Like a moth to a flame...

They weren't watching the time to see when sixth period was starting, but Cal found herself unable to care. She wanted to make this moment last as long as she could, and Grace seemed to be having the same idea (rather surprising coming from a straight-A student).

But unfortunately, all moments have to end, and theirs' did when Cal picked up the sound of a key fumbling into a lock. They instantly broke apart, just in time for the front door to swing open.

What the hell? There's no way Mom's off work this early!

However, it wasn't her mother who stepped into the house, but her older sister. The blonde shut the door behind her and seemed to start a bit when she saw the two of them over in the living room.

"Sam?" Cal called, a little flustered. "What are you doing here?"

"I could ask you the same thing," Samantha replied coolly, shaking off her initial surprise. She walked further inside, her eyes flickering between the two of them almost suspiciously. "Are you two skipping school?"

"We just stopped by for lunch," Cal answered, annoyed. She didn't need her sister's judgement – she could just keep her weird looks to herself.

"Well, I hope I wasn't interrupting anything," Samantha said, further irritating her younger sister. "I left my watch here and finally got the time to stop by and get it."

Meaning she was also trying to find a time when Mom wouldn't be around.

"Well don't let us stop you," Cal muttered sarcastically.

Samantha flashed her a look before running upstairs to her old bedroom. When she was out of sight, Grace glanced at Cal worriedly.

"Is she suspicious of us?" she asked.

Cal hadn't told her about how Samantha confronted her about their relationship two weeks ago. She figured it would just cause Grace to worry, and she already had plenty to worry about.

"Ah, don't mind her," Cal dismissed. "She just always comes off like that."

Grace nodded, but she seemed a bit unconvinced.

Samantha, after only a few seconds, appeared once more, heading down the stairs with her watch in her hand. However, once she reached the bottom step, a muffled ringtone began playing from her purse. The blonde dug it out of her bag and answered before really even looking at the screen.

"Hello?" she said in a monotone voice.

However, once the other person started speaking, Samantha's face immediately went red. Cal was actually stunned by that reaction – she hadn't seen her sister get flustered since she went through a shy phase back when they were kids.

"What? Why'd you do that? Urgh...no! Don't wait for me!"

She hung up abruptly, glaring at her phone. After putting it back in her purse, she noticed Cal staring at her.

"What?" she asked, her tone a bit shifty, as if she'd been caught red-handed with something.

"Nothing, nothing," Cal said, turning around on the couch.

She heard Samantha grab her coat and walked towards the front door. "Make sure you get to class on time."

And with that, she headed outside, shutting the door rather loudly behind her.

"Whoa," Cal uttered as if she was releasing a breath she'd been holding.

"What is it?" Grace asked.

"I've never seen my sister act like that," Cal said, suddenly very curious. "I wonder who was calling her."

"Does she have a boyfriend or something?"

"I don't know, but if she does, that couldn't have been him," Cal explained. "Sam's always been super cold around her boyfriends. That's why she gets dumped all the time."

Grace offered a half smile. "Maybe she found someone special this time."

Cal shook her head, unable to even imagine it. Samantha never really took an interest in anyone – she couldn't imagine her sister being in love. It was, like, contrary to her entire personality.

Grace pulled out her own phone and looked at the time. "Well, it looks like we're not going to make it to class on time after all."

Cal smirked. "Wanna ditch?"

Grace gave her the side eye and folded her arms across her chest.

"You're really a bad influence."

And Cal just laughed.
